lol thanks for the bump Collateral...

Anyways for those of you who have not read through them yet I just took the time to add a next lesson link at the bottom of each lesson so you don't have to go back to the index constantly just to get to the next lesson. My apologies for not doing that already. Enjoy peepz.

There is no Team in I

Good read, really enjoyed it and I might have learned a thing or two, I just wish you could have maybe given specific examples rather than just outlying a common problem without giving a specific solution.

These lessons are here to introduce you to the concept. The problem with answering specific examples is that you never cover every base. The whole point of a theory is to understand the cause of the problem the main "essence" of the problem if you must. That way when it comes up you will know it. Learning about specific examples comes with time and experience. Just remember the theory and always be looking out for it. Ultimately it will be better for you as a designer.

Catch a fish for a man and he only eats that one meal, however teach him to fish and he can eat forever. Or something like that... I hope you get what I'm getting at lol...

I'm glad you enjoyed it... and I too am glad that there is no more pain that comes with the geomerging... lol.

Anyways, today is a new day and something more to help the wait for Reach. Here is Lesson 21. Today's lesson was inspired by SilverJoachim's Stalemate map and GD27 Bluedevil asking about map replayability. Lesson 22 comes out like wednesday/thursday. Save the thread if you haven't already. Here is the synopsis and link:

Lesson 21: Incentive Weighting

* Incentives need to be assigned a weight/priority based on your map's essence
* Creating a "heatmap" of your map's incentives will help you visualize where players are more likely to travel
* Learning to spread out your map's incentives properly allows you to make every area of your map enjoyable and "balanced"

For those curious about the original source of these lessons. You can check my sig and click on my homepage to find it. ;) Enjoy my friends and see you on Reach.

EDIT: Oops... accidentally linked to my blog version. Sorry about that. It's fixed and goes to the bungie version now.

Thanks Fatbill...

Btw you guys. Even the game design world approves of this series. I have been transferring the series to Gamasutra.com, a major game design/development site. I just posted the 10th one this morning and out of the 10 that were posted 6 of them have been featured posts. You can see the lesson on the front page under "Level Design Lesson 10: Spawn Perspectives" and on the right side under Featured Blogs. So if that doesn't convince you that these are good for you, I don't know what will ;).

hi

Anyways, I found these lessons to be very well written, and even the most experienced forgers would benifit from them, as they reinforce proper planning techniques. Thanks for writting them, good job!

Thanks for the support Clubhouse... it's good to have people actually reading these and supporting them to improve all maps coming in Reach. Keep up the support peepz.

Wow, you make these things fast, trying to make as many as you can before Reach comes out are you?

Actually I'm slowing down the series a little. But they will be coming out like once every 3-4 days, it used to be once every other day and I started like Aug 3rd or something like that. There are tons more that I have to write about so this series won't end for a while. You guys might as well save the thread now. lol... ;)

- All "abriged" parodies are hilarious.

Damn dude, I'm around halfway through reading these and already I can tell you could turn this in as a college essay or something :)

This is like a feng shui guide for forge. (You know, that was a REALLY good analogy).

We need a community files fourm, and this needs to be sticked on it.

when in doubt, shoot your way out

another good lesson.
their will be a lot more people who can forge good maps now because of this

keep up the good work.

  • 09.13.2010 2:51 PM PDT

you cover the stuff that seems obvious at first sight, but in reality they are never thought of during the map creation process. Things such as spawning 2 feet away from a cliff does no map good, yet it happens on some of the best maps. even bungie has made such mistakes. great lessons Godly.

Looking forward to it.

I have an odd question:

Do you have any tips to get your maps noticed at all? I find it's harder to get people to find a map, play it, and rate/comment/like it on b.net then it is to actually make a great map.

Actually I have tons of tips on that. It seems like a lot of people want me to cover the advertising side of level design and getting your map out there. I'll definitely be looking at covering these lessons rather soon since it has been a highly anticipated subject. There are dozens of techniques out there.

Now I've used forge, these tips make it SO much easier to think about design. Thanks!
