It's been an eventful few days since my last lesson. Hopefully you've had some fun with forge so far. Hope these lessons help yall out in designing your maps. If you guys are having problems with setting up gametypes for your maps I will be releasing a guide to help you out on Saturday. Also my first piece of officially published content will be released tomorrow on my blog. Here is lesson 22's synopsis and link:

Lesson 22: Rule of Thirds

* Dividing a picture, screenshot, painting in thirds both vertically and horizontally will help you find its focus points
* The rule of thirds is a common rule of thumb for photographers so make it a common rule of thumb as a level designer in terms of perspectives
* By using the Rule of Thirds you have much more control and influence over a player's perspective

Can someone please help?

I made some things on a map that took over 3 hours, and the file did not save.

I know in H3, you could save a file as a film, and then import it as a map. I tried that with reach, but couldn't figure out how to do it.

If anyone knows how to do this so I don't have to do this work all over again, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

And considering the knowledge here concerning forge, I thought this would be the best place to post this question, thanks.

To be honest ghost. I have never heard of that trick from Halo 3 in all of my forging career. You may find some luck looking through the underground network of the Halo community for some help with that. Sorry bro, wish I could help.

And pro, all you need to do is go to the edge of the object that you are trying to adjust and select it, then click the left thumbstick in to "zoom" in and your camera will move at half speed. This technique does not work for vertical movement so in that case you are out of luck bro. Sorry.

REALLY BAD. I believe I deserve it, I am very loyal to the dear Bungie forums and want to keep everything in tip-top shape. Its always a real pleasure to be on the forums and I want to be recognized here.

These are awesome!

Why thank you Sparlan... glad you enjoyed them. Stay tuned tomorrow for Lesson 23. Make sure you save the thread so this can get bumped to help others find this.

I don't consider myself a great forger by any means, but I can guarantee you that when I get Reach i will put all of your tips to use. I just finished reading all of them and plan on re-reading them a few times. Thank you for all the time you put in to this, I will be sure to give you credit if I make any popular maps haha.

Hey guys just wandering if some of your forge vets had any idea how to fix my problem.

Problem: So I've created a map took about 12hrs in Forge World. But when I go to play the map in Slayer on custom games it lets us in but we take 5-10 steps and my guy falls over and the screen reads I've commited suicide and I fallen to my death but Im standing on solid ground. Please does anyone know how to fix this I would really like to play on this map I've made. Ive tried everything I could think of but nothing seems to fix this. Again please help.

Lesson 23 is up peepz and it covers the subject that relates to loadout cameras, screenshots, and other uncontrollable perspectives of the player. Here is the synopsis and link:

Lesson 23: Static Perspectives

* Static perspectives are perspectives that players have no control of
* Static perspectives are fully controlled by the designer giving great power when influencing a player's opinions
* Static perspectives need to be viewed as pieces of art that you are trying to sell to your audience

Main problem sounds stupid. I made a map friends like it I like it bla bla. I made for a verity of different kinds of multi-team matches like ctf, assault, slayer, etc. Unfortunately my map is not compatible with any game variants besides slayer. Its a huge map it takes up 3 different zones on forge world. Could that be the problem? I've done everything and this is the one thing that is holding back my map from being put out. Any Ideas of what I might be missing. I was thinking that it might be the safe zones. Does it have to cover the entire area even if players are not walking on it? I hope for a response and a solution to my problem.
Thankz,
Winteryshadow13

BECAUSE IT HURTS MORE!!

Hey guys,

first off, I used to love forge in halo 3 and would make lots of cool stuff for me and my friends to muck about in. Just got reach and I really want to get involved with the community and share some of my maps and games I've been making. But I'm a complete noob to this stuff and haven't a clue what to do to get involved. If anyone could reply with some info, point me in the direction of good community sites etc, would be much appreciated.

cheers.

Hey, good info, though I admittedly came into this thread looking for answers for questions on the technical side of Forge that I'm not finding answers for elsewhere.

The big one right now is I can't get a 2-way teleporter node to function. The size is big enough to accommodate a player on either end. I can get it to work going in one direction, but not the other. Obviously the channels are on the same one.

I ran into a problem:

I am making a map on the island in forge world. My plan is/was to have a large wall surround the island like in Isolation from halo 3 (Hated the game-play of it, but loved the visual theme)

Anyways, after using a ton of collosiusm walls, I only have 20 left, but they aren't high enough to give it a trapped in feel.

Any suggestions?

Thanks king mad. Well this seems to be a popular place to throw down forge questions so I may as well help you out lol... feel free to ask your technical forge questions as well. As far as your 2 way teleporter goes did you make sure that players/infantry is enabled on both teleporters? If so then I'll help you out personally. Just go over to my blog @ reachingperfection.com and follow the directions on the Request Help page.

For you Jabberwock I suggest checking out the large brace or the large walkway piece. Large brace is under decorative and large walkway is under bridges and platforms. They are both longer than the wall coliseum. I think the large brace gives more of the feel that you are looking for that could create the same feel of isolation. But instead of pairing them together try seperating them and putting something in-between them like the wall coliseums or something similar. Putting one after the other will definitely help that feel. Also try pulling the large brace slightly inward more so it stands out as the taller piece. You also get the added touch of the curved part of the large brace which you can hook inwards at the top or outwards to give it a cool effect.

Any PM's (about my armor) sent over Bungie.net or Friend Requests (for my armor) over Live will be unanswered/declined. Sorry! All you need to know is that I was given my armor because I fulfilled one of the secret requirements for Bungie Day 09. I am a pre-owner of Recon!

Wow, I've only read through two tutorials and I'm very impressed. Great job, this must have taken a long time and a lot of effort. I think I'll print these out too.

Keep up the great work :D

Subject: Are you waiting to make maps in Forge 2.0? This will help you wait...

Reading through some of this neat guide, looking for a quick tip, if there is one. I have ALOT of trouble getting objects to line up on the same horizontal plane when they are in a phased or fixed state. I generally can lay down a grid and have my buildings and floors set to normal so they all are level with eachother, but this limits me alot. To make my question more clear, is there a proper way to make buildings/objects of the same type line up on the same horizontal plane? (I.e two roofs of the same building combining to have a smooth walking surface.)

  • 09.20.2010 3:37 PM PDT

RulerofXbox, your best best is using the "Edit Coordinates" menu, which you can find by pressing B while holding the object in question.

This will snap the object to grid coordinates, which you can "fine" tune, though you may find the smallest adjustments possible in this fashion to be more than you want. Both objects in question can be snapped to the grid coordinates for easier alignment, but this leaves the rest of whatever structure you're working with at the mercy of potential gaps developing (albeit small ones, they're still annoyances to me personally). If you're not happy with this method, as I often found myself, you're stuck using the bumpers for vertical adjustment. Which, I'm sure you're already aware, is like trying to park an 18 wheeler on a space meant for a clown car.

  • 09.20.2010 4:12 PM PDT

Thanks, been working like a charm. Every now and again I get a piece that just WONT adjust properly though, what a bugger. Should've given the building blocks some sort of sticky properties for when they are being placed sequentially. doh! >.<

Glad you are enjoying them WuBr and thanks for helping Ruler out King Mad. I definitely suggest the same thing. Though I would also like to mention that sometimes the coordinate editing system is a tad off and you have to use fine editing to fix it. For vertical find editing the only technique I can suggest is one from my good friend GunnerGrunt who suggests that you grab the object and then almost simultaneously press the left/right bumper at the same time as letting go of the object. This will allow you to move it just a hair. It takes a lot of practice to get the timing right but it is the best way to move things vertically by small measurements.

But...if you let go of the object how do you move it?

  • 09.21.2010 9:59 AM PDT

Ive been playing forge and have started expiriencing lag in the objects movement making it impossible to position objects in place, is this because i have too many things on my map? i still have $5000 remaining this is very dissapointing because i was hoping to make a great world that i could expand each day.
