Spamming is neccesary to a community. It sounds drastic, and silly, I know, but let me explain.

Its almost as if we, the regular, well behaved users are fighting this war against the spammers. We are the foot soldiers, the privates. We take potshots at our enemy with our weaponry, but it doesn't do much damage, it merely makes them more willing to fight. So we call in the 'heavy guns', the mods. Now, these guys are armed to the teeth, and they have special training as well....

Don't you see? This constant conflict is part of what makes b.net so fun. Not fun for the mods, they must get bored locking deleting, banning etc. But for us it offers a somewhat fun experience, being 'at war' with the spammers.

OK. I'm here.

My opinion on these ideas: No.

We do not need any more mods at the moment. We can handle it for now. There are seven of us, after all. As for giving people "semi-mod" powers, well, this has been suggested, and I (and most of the people who you actually suggested for such powers) am opposed to this, because it gives people the impression that they are powerless, and won't respect them, because they're only "a semi-mod".

As for "shifts", I'd hate to be expected to show up at a set time every day. We have lives too! The fact that we have most time zones covered (I'm from Australia, goweb's in the UK, and the others are scattered around the US) helps out in this regard - we can basically patrol the forum for most of the day.

Don't worry, we're going to get more secret powers at the next site update, so that we can ensure that some people never return. Ever.

I like the idea where like 10 really trusted members get anti-spam options. They would look for which topic each one was in the most, and assign them there. They could put a thread on "hold" and stuff...

EDIT: Sorry, Reg... Didnt read your post. My bad.

Isnt that like an IP Ban or something? It bans their IP adress?

i dont know about you guys, but i think spam is getting out of hand. if ya dont believe me, check out new mombasa. im only saying this because i feel there should be drastic changes, but the only ones i can think of are these:

all topics have to be checked by a MOD. the only problem, MOD shortage. it would take too long, and MODS arent always around.

all new members have to be checked by MODS. this makes sence, because there generally arent that many new members, and the wait will be worth it (if your not a previous spammer)

any other ideas?

What if you would get people who stand between the mods and the normal members, so they only have the ability to lock down a topic, but limited so they are restricted, thus giving more control over the forum. The best thing to do is to keep these people hidden, as in nobody knows they are "it" only themselfs and the mods, they have a secret community.

the comuntity should have an option to declair something spam (like a poll) and if theres too many ppl saying its spam its auto locked. that ideas similar to yours.

We can't check and approve every member. That's insane. Nobody has time for that. We are recieving new tools soon that will allow us to deal with spam.

I'd also like to point out that a lot of people around here seem to think any thread they're not particularly interested in is spam. More and more often I'm getting spam reports that link to threads that are just fine. The spam in the forums isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. For example, if someone asks a question about Halo 2, even if that answer is readily available if they searched hard enough, it's not spam if it's in New Mombasa. A GOOD forum member will answer the question and politely remind them to search in the future. Even if someone has posted an idea that you read yesterday, you've no right to tell them their post sucks.

Personally, I think even worse than the spammers right now are the elitist users that seem to think they have the right to place a face value on other users threads, and flame them thusly. In my list, those would be the first to go.

Exactly. My. Thoughts.

If you don't like a thread, for personal or other reasons, do not "pass your judgement" on it. If you want a more clear definition of spam, go look in the code of conduct

And don't even think of talking about lumpy pudding

It is my personal belief that the spamming problem is there but not as bad as you say... and not where you say it is either...

I base myself in the Underground, and I just had to notify the Mods about 4 different threads of Halo2, and one discussion about the pronunciation of Maka's name. If there are stupid questions asked, drop them a link or answer the question. If that answers them, the thread will disappear under new stuff and the problem will be gone, it's that simple :)

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

Technically, bumping a topic would be spam, correct? And technically, you guys posted a few times soley with the hopes of a mod seeing it, (By bumping it) and the post had nothing else to contribute. So in a technical... kind of way there was some minor spam in this thread too... I guess. But it wasn't bad. Just saying there are different types of spam.

And also people wonder why I never visit New Mombasa. I visit the flood more often than I visit New Mombasa. A lot of that is I also want Halo 2 to be a surprise and I don't want to hear any more info/theories/whatever. I just want to play it.

And I'm just wondering... is a Moderator workout similar to a Richard Simmons workout?

"Cmon mods! One, and two, three and four. Five, six, seven and eight. Now rest."
