In attempting to complete the weekly LASO challenge, I randomly decided to do a Mythic run. And you know what? I did.

It was rather frustrating, but fulfilling unto itself. I now find every Covenant troop just as frustrating as the last (for different reasons). I am also very sad that I allowed myself to get armor lock'd trying to splatter that first Elite head on after jumping in the Revenant. After taking him out the first time, I guess I just got a taste for splattering him.

One thing of note:

Does destroying the fuel rod shades at the beginning signal the arrival of the pelican, or is it something else? I've had one shade operational and the pelican'll drop the 'hog, and I've had everything except the Elite dead and the pelican'll strafe in the air like there's some massive hazard still present, and a bunch of variants in-between. Did I just need to move up a little bit further or something?

Excellent work!

Not sure about the Pelican. Usually what I do is destroy both Shades, then move up the path far enough that I'm out of range of the other enemies. This seems to trigger the Pelican.

Oh, you guys don't know? I thought it was common knowledge, but I guess not, so I'll share.

The pelican is triggered by the deaths of the two operator grunts (the green grunts that have no helmets. They start in the turrets, I believe) The pelican will drop the hog when you move behind the rock close to the shade turret near the cliff. How do you think RC Master got the hog so fast?

EDIT: I tried TOTS today with a friend to get the challenge (well, to help him get the challenge. I can get in fine on my own). A couple of very noticeable differences in CLASO:

Both of you start with a grenade launcher with only four rounds and an assault rifle. Have killing the two operator grunts.

There are now three ultras at the base of the second Tyrant gun with one wielding an assault rifle. Have fun trying to splatter them.

The falcon ride is abysmally hard; both players get into the same falcon; one uses the grenade launcher on one side, the other uses the other one. You're now taking double the fire than on single-player Mythic. I was killed by a fuel rod from a turret on my friend's side. Even after many retries, we still couldn't get it. This is why I do not have the challenge yet.

This is also why I do not want to do co-op Mythic.

No wait...I might with you guys. Even if we don't complete the level, I imagine it's still a lot of fun, if you don't mind broken friendships.

This is why I've only done nightfall LASO co-op. All the other ones I do SLASO because just because we're good friends doesn't mean the other person has the skills to keep up with me in terms of speed and tactics and patience.

I tried to do ONI LASO co-op and boy oh boy what a complete nightmare. For some ridiculous reason my teammates thought they could just bum rush the enemies right from the start!!! So of course we never even made past the bridge because they kept dying.

Even with nightfall co-op, the first time I tried, I told my friends to just hang back, let me do all the work and I'll get them warped up. Nope. They kept thinking that they could assist me by alerting all the enemies behind me who seemed to radio the enemies ahead of me ruining my stealth run. They also seemed to forget that with all the skulls on, elites shields deflect sniper bullets as well.

I was tempted to try Winter LASO co-op to have some teammates as distractor assistants but in the end I didn't think it was worth dealing with the extra elites at the end. I wound up knocking it out by myself just fine after I perfected my tactic of running up to elites and doing the melee 2-step with them.

I did this as well, it is much more difficult. I don't know what they expect you to do with an AR but its awful. We made it past the falcon ride and to our surprise at the top of the spire there are THREE elite ultras. 2 with concussion rifles and the sword guy that is usually there.

But we did take down the 2nd AA gun in record time with both revenant and warthog shots on it

OK somethings been bothering me:

I keep hearing people pronounce 'laso' as 'lah-so' i.e. as in 'lasso' but I've always pronounced in 'Lay-zo' as in 'laser' but with an 'o' instead of 'er.'

Personally, I think 'slay-zo' sounds cooler than 'slah-so'

How do other people pronounce it?

Slah-so

Lah-so

Pretty sure it is simply moving up far enough. If I remember correctly, I once tried a speedrun and just ran up after killing one shade, and it came.

Yeah, I noted that when I watch RC Master's speedrun. Pop. Pop. Pelican swoop. That part of the mission was always variable time-wise for me, so I'll give that a (head)shot (or two) some other time.

Moving up will cause the Pelican to appear overhead, but not drop the warthog. You need to get both turrets empty at the same time. They don't need to be destroyed, but you need to kill both grunts within a second or 2 of each other. Otherwise, another Grunt will jump back into the first turrent before you clear out the second one.

By the way, my video guide to completing Tip of the Spear SLASO is now up on my website and youtube.

I use a combo between Tyrant's guide and RC Master's Speedrun video for my strategy. I also run into some trouble during the BXR station: I miss "The Jump" and land one level too low on the beams. Takes me a minute, but I do find a way back up :)

It's also worth watching my attack on the Spire at the end, since it goes particularly smoothly.... might be helpful.

Big thanks to Tyrant,RC Master, and everyone else who helped me get through Tip of the Spear!

  • 03.24.2011 11:59 AM PDT

To get the Pelican to appear I just move far enough ahead to trigger it. To get it to land, you just have to walk back towards the pelican and it will begin to land. You'll probably want to take out the turrets because I would fear that they would blast you to oblivion before you could drive off.

Are you sure? I'm 90% sure that you just need to kill the two green grunts. I do remember being bombarded with fuel rod fire while I wait for the pelican to land.

I'm pretty sure. The moment both turrets are empty, the Pelican will swoop down and drop off the Warthog. While this is happening, another Grunt might jump back into one of the turrets and open fire on you, but by that time the Hog dropoff has already been triggered.

If you watch my video guide, or RC Master's you'll see the Pelican moves in the moment both Grunts are dropped. In my video, you can see a Grunt jumps back into one of the turrets and opens fire. However, if you kill one of the grunts, but let another take his place before you kill the other turret grunt, the Pelican will hover overhead for a while, firing on the covenant troops. It will eventually move in and drop off the Warthog. But for me, it always moved in much faster if I got both turrets empty at the same time.

Both turrets are empty, I'm assuming, because you killed the two green grunts who start in the turrets. I don't think the pelican will land if you just make them bail out by using your grenade launcher.

Ok, the turrets need to be clear as well.

But if at the beginning, you just suppress the turrets using your grenade launcher to make them keep jumping out, the pelican won't land.

So in conclusion: At the bare minimum both green grunts need to be dead, the turrets need to be cleared simultaneously (even for just a brief moment) and you need to move close to that rock.

Are we in agreement?

Not true. I've gotten the pelican to move in by supressing with the grenade launcher. Neither of the grunts were dead, but both turrets were empty and I had moved up far enough.

I did this today running through on co-op to get the weekly for my roommate.

Wow, I just realized now how powerful the shade turrets are on the falcon part. Before, I thought that the concussion ultras were just as dangerous as the shade turrets. This is not the case. The shade turrets are your top priority.

Fantastic, I finished a mythic Tip of the Spear run, more than halving my previous time (47 down to 19min), and with a much cooler and cleaner run too! Thanks for the tips guys!

Cheers RC for spotting how simple it can be to jack the wraith after warthog-ing the gun, that area is much less daunting now.

EDIT:

Another alternative for grabbing a banshee on New Alexandria seems to be Club Errera - if you stand around on the side helipad (on the right hand side of the building if you are standing outside facing the entrance) a whole bunch of banshees seem to fly around aimlessly, and pay little-to-no attention to you. (Ofcourse I've only tried it when the current objective was the hospital, I don't know how their numbers/behaviour would be otherwise)

Can't PP-disable them because they are never above any ground of sorts, but they fly so slow and close that you'll soon find one close enough that if you stand on the edge you should be able to jump to it. Certainly a little risky... jetpack would make it a little safer, but I've only ever tried it without and its not bad, as long as you wait for the perfect opportunity (in my attempts, it has never been a long wait).

EDIT2:

Woo! Thats NA done too. Only Exodus, LNOS and POA to go! Thanks again for the tips and guides!

20 minutes faster than my other Tip of The Spear run

Also on Exodus what is the best way to get the wraith? Because alot of the time im killed by the morter or while im trying to board it.

Jetpack + Plasma Pistol. The Wraith can't hit you in mid-air. Make sure to kill the Grunt on the turret first, of course.
