I'm sure this question has already been answered, but I've backtracked through this forum and can't find it.

How exactly do you take control of the Pelican Turrent at the end of LNOS?

Thanks :)

You have to get in it before it's destroyed by a stray plasma grenade; this is why I think that Tyrant recommends to enter the hangar, guns blazing (to draw fire away from the pelican gun towards you). Crouch-walk into the side on the pelican shown in Tyrant's video and then hold your action button, like you're entering any other vehicle. Once you're in the turret, shoot the ground directly beneath you to clear your vision.

The gun sucks, though. The only reason you should use it is that you're invulnerable.

I believe that he, DarkDevistation, and myself are the only ones who have Mythic videos up on youtube.

You're kidding right? There are no less than 2 different versions of both winter contingency and tip of the spear from me on the highspeedhalodotnet channel. Additionally, my run of sword base, my 4:15 of nightfall and my new alexandria run are on the 'mythiclaso' channel (don't ask me who runs that because I dont know) and my 3:43 of nightfall is on my own channel (masterrc).

All my speedruns are in a playlist on my channel. Hmm, I should make a playlist of just my latest mythic times though...

OH! My bad RC I forgot about your videos. I even added you as a friend and subscribed. Yeah I've watched your videos too.

You know, I think I know why we can't skip the irritating LNoS cutscenes. They're more than likely cover ups for the game to load the next sections ie first cutscene = Anchor 9 segment, second cutscene = corvette segment.

It's likely the case seeing how the level is based in 3 completely seperate areas.

Edit; FINALLY beat LNoS for the weekly true mythic style. Not as happy with my time though considering it's still over an hour long, but it's better than my old 1:50:XX one.

Film: here.
Game stats: here.

Edit 2: Well I tried PoA after watching RC's run and man, his skips etc work like a charm. Only trouble I'm having is at the landing pad with the concussion jump; most of the time I just fall short of reaching the ledge and usually can't do much from then on.

RC, what's the trick behind it exactly? Crouch > grenade > jump > 3 shot concussion seems so simple yet there's got to be a specific timing behind it I guess. Otherwise I'm just not spamming the trigger enough.

This may be well known, but I discovered that you can let Jorge into the hangar without killing the Focus Rifle Elites. I snuck around the far side of the hangar (away from the shield door) until I was near the middle, standing behind the large bulge that contains the door to the next part of the mission. Shooting at the FR Elites sometimes makes them retreat to ground level. One did, the other stayed up top. I ran up towards the button, EMP'd him to stun him, then hit the button. After the cut scene, the FR Elites were gone.

It's a dangerous way to go, but since I'm doing Save & Quit, it was worth the risk. I thought speed runners might also be interested to know it's possible. If the technique could be perfected, it should save some time.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Wow, the General was way easier to take down than I thought. And the crate game saved my life more times than I'd like to admit. Thanks Tyrant!

  • 04.09.2011 6:10 AM PDT

So I did my Long Night of Solace LASO run yesterday, 2 player co-op. This is probably already known, but I'll share anyway.

When Jorge first arrives in the hangar with the Pelican, I decided to see if I could climb into the gun... I wanted to practice so I would be able to get it right quickly at the end of the mission.

I got into the gun no problem, jumped back out, and went on with the rest of the mission. However, when I got back to the hangar at the end, I was no longer able to jump into the turret. I tried about a dozen times (save and reverts), from both sides of the Pelican.

So, it looks like jumping into the Pelican earlier in the mission somehow prevented me from getting into it at the end.

TotS? "Easier"? Really? I know it's not LNoS hard, but not by much!

There are so many tricks in that level, it makes it fun. Run up the left side at the beginning and kill the two gunner grunts.

Rocket the AA gun.

Rocket the bridge.

Skip the Zealot.

Chain gun the AA gun

Kill the wraith(s) with the revenant

Use the two plasma launchers and chain gun the hunters

The falcon ride is not a coin-toss at all. By far you biggest threat is the plasma turrets. If you can kill those before they shoot at you, you're pretty much in the clear.

Run up the right side after DMRing the focus rifle skirmishers.

The spire can be tricky; just jetpack away from the ultra.

To me, Tip of the Spear is fairly straight forward EXCEPT for the 2nd AA gun. There are so many different ways that encouter can play out. I think that's why so many people find it so difficult. They might watch 1 guide, then get to that AA gun and go "Hey, this isn't how it happened in the guide I watched", then they panic or don't know what to do.

You need to go into that mission with 3 or 4 dufferent contingency plans for dealing with the 2nd AA gun, then react accordingly. It requires quite a bit more research than any of the missions up to that point.

I have another possible LNoS shortcut that might already be known and might be too dangerous if you don't want to Save and Quit.

After Jorge entered the hangar, I killed the Grunts, then snuck around the two Ultras and went on to the cannon room. The two Ultras there were alert, but 4 Marines were still alive and followed me inside. (If the Marines had been dead, perhaps the cannon room Elites wouldn't be alert... I don't know.) The Marines served as a distraction so I could assassinate both cannon room Ultras. Much faster than my first run! One Marine was even still alive, but I had to kill him so he didn't mess up the Bridge.

Coming back after the Bridge, the original two Ultras were still alive. But the side door was still open (my first run it got locked), so I was still able to get to the Pelican gun. I had to kill those two Ultras with the gun in order to get to the next wave. Still, I'd rather do that than the long cat-and-mouse against them and the cannon room Ultras.

If you know you're going to have your cover blown when you get to the bridge, quickly assassinate the general; he's the only one that can kill you in a matter of seconds from long range.

On my run that I did for the weekly, I had all four marines alive when I got to the bridge (LOLWUT) and one survived the bridge battle. That general is probably your biggest threat; make sure you get him first.

I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. Too bad this is the most boring mission to speedrun in all of Halo because of the space battles and non-skippable cutscenes...

Finished the Fight!

Trying to get a serious headstart on the next LASO Challenge, I decided to start tackling EXODUS. And I hate it. Hate it thoroughly becuase me and the jetpack simply don't get along.

Mission is as straighforward as described by Tyrant and except for a couple of stupid deaths, it wasn't that challenging...until I I got the the jetpack leapfroging section. Try as I could, I could not make that tricky jetpack leap towards the end of the danger zone without plumetting to my death. And on those two times I did, I was welcomed with a plasma grenade to my face.

So what did I do? I backtracked to the begining of the section and (with use of good cover) started capping fools with the DMR. I made it even all the way back across the chasm to the beginning of the map, got more DMR ammo from the crate and continued the slow methodical battle. There's one Jackal with a needle rifle but I left it alone 'till the very end, since you'll really need it to deal with the two serious threats in that area: the two captains; one with a hammer, that can be dropped easily, and another that has a concussion rifle. Drop those two with needle rounds and you'll conquer that area. So that battle is quite doable without death defying jetpack leaps.

But then there's the ascent to the Traxus tower landing pad. I couldn't make the crazy jetpack stunts yet again, so I decided to ascend the tower as you'd normally do...and that's simply ridiculousy painful and simply the worst thing you can do. You'll have plenty of ammo to tackle the fight normally, but there will be a FRG Brute Chieftain at the top of the catwalk leading up to the building with the landing pad that makes things simply ridiculous. If you manage to kill that Chieftain and make it to the landing pad, odds are you will be stumped there hopelessly, since there is no easy way to tackle the OTHER FRG Chieftain in there and all the tangos in that building. So doing the crazy leap of faith jetpack stunt so that you can assasinate that crazy bastard there from the get go is simply the ONLY way to go...and since, again, the jetpack and I don't get along then I think that's the one LASO challenge I simply won't be able to beat. :(

I'm in the last room right before the hanger after coming back from the bridge, I didn't place the crates to block the enemies getting out of the room so I'm having trouble getting past the two elites. Does anyone have any tips?

Bring a crate up from the bridge and hide behind it.

Going into the Pelican when you first encounter it shouldn't be the reason you can't re-enter it when you come back to it at the end. I did exactly as you did for the exact same reason. It's funny because I kept it in the back of my head that I may have screwed myself out of getting back into the Pelican. But I did exactly as Tyrant's video, distracted some of the covenant as I entered the room with some needle rifle shots, ran to the Pelican, threw up a bubble shield and I was in. I guess I have been fortunate that the turret hasn't been destroyed because I don't see myself making it through that part of the stage without the awesomeness known as the Pelican turret.

Thanks, I'll check that out. :)

As for the Pelican gun, I've a suspicion you can enter and re-enter it at anytime, whether it's been destroyed or not. I supppose it's all in not losing your head about it and Bungie's enabling of the Pelican as a flyable combat vehicle, even if it is as an easter egg in an entirely different mission. I'll try to redo that part of the mission on a different difficulty and will destroy the turret with a grenade of my own to test the theory.

Damn, I was hoping Exodus would be the easiest one to beat considering there's no elites or anything. Not to mention the building that houses the FRG brute has 2 shade turrets and i think a gravity hammer brute as well.

Ok, confirmed: no getting back up to the Pelican gun if it's blown up. I got on it then blew it up with a rocket before heading into the cannon room and bridge. When I returned to it after finishing my business, there was no way to board the Pelican.

So I decided to restart Exodus to, again, get a headstart on next week's LASO challenge (providing there is one), and lo and behold, we're hit with another campaign weekly. I don't want to lose my progress since Exodus is quite tedious as it is. However, I wonder if I can have my cake and eat it too: could I backup my current save elsewhere, do any and all weekly and campaign challenges for this week and then re-load that save gae in order speed up the LASO for next week? Is that possible?

My current 360 is an arcade model with an internal memory card thingie. I also have the hard drive from my original 360, bought so many aeons ago. Therefore, everytime I load up Reach it asks me which of the two memory devices I want to use. So it could be doable, right? Or could a stunt like that mess up my overall campaign progress/commendations?
