I have a crazy theory on how to make the game as a whole, easier on Mythic. Of course, this hasn't been proved under controlled circumstances, but it's worth a try.

The answer: pretend you don't have Iron on.

When I do my practice runs, I do so much better than when I play for real. I cleared the landing pad with one death, but I didn't have needle rifle, so that death can be excused. I cleared the zealots and the field marshall first time on without Iron. I wonder what would happen if on my next attempt, I pretend I don't have Iron on...

Of course, I can only speak for myself.

When the dust settles, you will learn what true terror is.

Annnnd New Alexandria is finished. Amazing how much easier this level is when you don't get the hospital first (happened to me about all of my attempts until this one).

Game Stats will say it took me hours because I paused and walked away to go get lunch with my roommate.

I swear New Alexandria purposefully throws the hospital at you time and time again when you're first starting it on Mythic.

As for playing as if Iron were on, that state of mind comes naturally when playing the level once you've already completed it on Mythic.

For choosing which main objective the game will throw at you first, it may (huge emphasis on "may") have something to do with the direction you're flying. For example, when I flew towards the hospital, I always got the hunter objective first. Convenient, because I needed to push the "Never Surrender" button.

I've never played a level on Mythic after I've beaten it; I'm usually sick of the level at that point. I'm sure POA would seem a lot less stressful on Mythic if I've beaten it before, but until then, I need to keep my endurance up.

I've never tried it during "srs busnss" games, but are energy drinks recommended for Mythic sessions?

I've noticed it during the other Mythic campaigns when I'd do a level for fun; when you don't feel worried by the possibility of failure, you might be surprised by just how crazy of moves you can pull off. Of course, I never really get worried by the possibility of failure in the first place. I welcome it. You could play a song to all my deaths on Coastal Highway and it would become a montage. XD

Insomnia beats caffeine. Insomnia beats energy drinks. Insomnia beats everything! In short, I have no opinion, because aside from the assistance I get from my sleeping pill, I don't have to worry about not feeling very awake.

As for drinks, I drink a lot of water, but I've been doing that for years.

See, it's people like you that start epic business or invent something amazing, because you thrive on failure. I wish I could do that. I guess I do, to a point, otherwise I wouldn't have beaten Halo 3 and ODST on Mythic. I guess every time I die, I learn one more way how not to play the game.

Insomnia, Jesus, that's serious. Is it like you're exhausted but you can't fall asleep, or is it like you don't get tired at all? The latter might be good for Mythic, but not so good for health. Get well soon, Vince!

This weekend or next chance I get to play, I'll try that "fun" strategy you speak of; like the kind I have during my practice runs. The only problem is that it's in the back of my mind and I don't know how to force it away; or as Calvin said in that comic strip, "it's like trying to enjoy your last meal before your execution." It won't hurt to try. I might lose a few hours, but I've got at least a good sixty years of life left.

I drink soda, but nothing more caffeinated than that. As far as the iron skull, I've noticed that having iron alone makes levels seem much more... intimidating to play. For me at least. I'm just glad that New Alexandria finally gave me Club Errera for the first objective (which I had to go to the hospital for first) and then gave me Sinoviet so I would have camo for the Hospital.

That said, I very nearly got killed by the last ranger in the hospital. He jumped on my head (I was camo'd) and I looked up, turned, and assassinated him. This was after my marine that I gave a fuel rod to very nearly decimated him with a full 30-second barrage of green death.

We need a new way of dealing with Long Night's Focus Rangers. What I've seen so far is sh**ty and impractical for the average gamer. It can take several minutes to get one's shields down, and unless you have a monster-size TV, you won't know unless you zoom in every few shots.

We need to figure out a way to close the gap...

What? Thats one of the areas I have the least problems with! Either I get stupid -blam!- deaths in space, or I die in the comms room, or the freakin' grunts in front of the freakin' globe on the bridge screw everything up.

Get this: the only time I've yet managed to get from mission start through the comms room in one peice, I get to the bridge and there are 2 freakin' Grunts staring at the globe! I try to just take out the General sneakily, but they spot me and alert everyone sending me running all the way back across the room only to die a couple of metres from the exit with a concussion rifle round to the back of my head.

To top it off, I had never got the General to go crouch-idle behind that pillar before. 2 resumes later, he does it almost straight away after I kill the rest of the enemies!! BLAM YOU GENERAL!!!!

Cannon control is a breeze. The last few times I've been there, I've managed to assassinate both of the Elites.

Oh, and speaking of -blam!- space deaths, anyone know how the hell this happened? Nothing near me, only 5 hits from full shields (and the sabre still had shields even after I had died) and I still just die.

I hate this level. I hate whoever designed it. I hate the unskippable cutscenes. I hate how boring and time consuming and frustrating the space section is. I hate how useless the other sabres are (they hit ME more than they hit the seraphs!) I hate how the only target they spend more than half a second shooting at is ME! The only bit I like is inside the Corvette, and only after the comms room.

I've also taken a bunch of pictures (and am going to take several more) and post a full pictorialized guide soon (probably on HBO, including my made-up names for some of the buildings :P)

Based on that video, it seems your player died rather than the ship blowing up. Perhaps somehow your shields lowered in the Sabre and you died rather than the Sabre.

Yes, in term of Mythic, Long Night indeed sucks. And I'm not exactly sure what the deal is with the unskippable cutscenes. I mean really, did anyone actuall enjoy Gravemind and Cortana's constant banterin in Halo 3 over and over again? I'm pretty sure I made a note of it in both versions of the Halo 3 Mythic guides. Come on, Bunglez! :-P

  • 11.09.2010 4:15 AM PDT

So, I got hit with a lagged melee from a regular Elite last night. I turned a corner after baiting him out of the hanger and saw him there. I wasn't close enough to melee, but he swung anyway. So I slash him once with my sword, he hops sideways and then I die.

Update on Long Night.

I've tried both methods against the Focus Rangers; distance plasma and distance Needle Rifle. The later seems to give me more success since I can aim better. But just the same, both methods suck horribly. I mean horribly! I mean I'd rather slit an artery than have to do either one of those every time. It requires an extraordinary amount of patience (again you're looking at someone who beat H3 on Mythic before the tricks) and large amounts of ammo. At least if you're like me and do most of your mid to long ranged sniping with a mouse and keyboard rather than a controller. I'm going to find another way. The current methods suck. Period.

When I did my pp technique I rarely got hit at all. I move roughly up to needle rifle crate on the left ramp and use the cover there. Also, by using the pillar that runs in the corner of the ramps you can jump up and down to check for stray grunts without the rangers seeing you.

As I've said, though, I've tried both methods. I'm not saying they aren't doable, but they are extremely undesirable and frustrating.

I've found a way to get fairly close to them, though. So I'm going to practice that to see if I can master it.

Odd. I didn't find it that time consuming, in fact I relished the challenge. That fight is tangible, you are in control, whereas the Comms room brawl is a complete clusterf**k where anything can go wrong and the whole situation gets FUBAR.
Ditto the space fight actually.

Then again, I like these so called boring moments on Mythic because they give me a chance to double check my game plan and make sure that I'm prepared for the next hurdle thrown my way.
Then again, you do admit to a lot of PC gaming which I've never done and I think there's a unanimous chorus of consent that unskippable cutscenes suck.

EDIT:
@Michael:
Playing as though Iron isn't on just leads me to die. I do much better when I pretend it is on even if it isn't (like when I play Legendary).

No promises, but I think I may have just broken the Comms Room battle. Or at least made it MUCH easier. Just an FYI though. I've only done this on Legendary with half the skulls turned on, so I'll need to try it a few times on Mythic first before I call it a guaranteed win. But it definitely made my trip through both the Comms Center and the Hangar much easier.

EDIT: I've also broken the space battle.

No offense but I actually didn't use your guide... I talked to Vince while I ran through it for strategies on the hospital, but other than that I just kind of knew where the objectives were from my couple practice runs. During those practice runs I had to hunt down the objectives (did it with blind on so I'd be used to it) and I happened to get two that I knew the locations of when I beat it. :P

Broken, or just made easier? Broken usually means you don't actually have to do anything. I see the Nightfall Forklift glitch as breaking the end fight of the level, because it simply doesn't happen.

Also, for the Focus Rifle Elites on LNoS in the Hanger; I did a few tests of positions. I thought this (this) spot works quite well.
As you'd take out the Elites by Plasma Pistolling them then jumping back into cover. Quickly going back out again to headshot and finish them. Another example - Also this picture shows I have no shields, which is important because I have a video of this tactic which I did with no shields. I repeated it at least 15 times and I didn't die once. I'll upload the video to my file share as soon as I get back on Xbox.
