I find it odd you were having so much trouble with the first two elites on the Corvette Tyrant. The first one is cake, and surely you can use the RL/sniper on the second if you're having difficulty assassinating?
Like I said, ultimately it just comes down to what's easier and more practical.
I just died again on Long Night, but this time it wasn't in vain. This is the THIRD time I've made it past the hangar with my new method.
The rockets work like they're supposed to. You are SUPPOSED to be attracting attention so they come to you. Here's how it works. Sword + RL, right? Okay, sword the first two Elites that come up out from the comms room like you normally would. Next jump down onto the "rafter" and rocket the two at the control panel. This immediately takes your numbers down from Elites to two Elites. Only the dual wielders are left. Continue to hang out in the rafter until one of them tries to attack you from below (and use dropshield to keep you safe). Normally, the dual wielders will just stare at you and hose down the plasma until the shield pops. As this is happening, you should be aiming your RL directly at the Elite so that the second the shield pops, you can let him have it. Again, it only takes ONE DIRECT HIT with a rocket to kill a Ranger.
The other may also wander down to you, but often times he'll go down to the lower level to engage the Marines. When he's done with them, drop down the the second floor. The Elite will boost up to you but will be unable to attack until after his feet touch the ground. This is basically a free kill. Shoot him while he's in midair and can't dodge or fight back.
Again, this method has worked for me several times in a row. Little to no luck required! :-)
Nice strategy man. I told you there was more than one rockets marine. ;)
Basically, the only real difficult part is gathering the ammo from the dead Marines as they the Covenant continue to advance. On the bright side, it's still the start of the mission. Even if you die, you haven't lost much. It's still a LOT better than dying at the comms room after a perfect space run simply because there was a dual wielder where you weren't expecting him.
