Hey Tyrant, you probably don't remember me, but I met you in the firefight line at PAX. Told you this game was harder. I just spent about an hour on ONI Sword Base as an expirement, every grunt taking two headshots and elites needing three plasma pistol overcharges makes me cry a little inside. Since you seem to have had the least trouble with Winter Contingency, I'll give that a shot, see how I do without the walkthrough at first.

I seem to be a bit better at Halo Reach than I was at 3, so maybe I'll be able to do more than a couple of levels this time. Best of luck to everyone attempting, let's get this done.

Just curious, aside from ONI, NIghtfall and Winter Contingency, any other missions completed on Mythic by anyone?

Yeah. I believe RC Master beat New Alexandria.

Just curious, you do know you can edit your posts, right?

Yea, that was an attempted edit and I -blam!- up and hit the wrong button, apologies.

Haha yes I remember, and welcome to the challenge! So how did your Firefight match turn out?

Yes, so far Winter Contingency is by far the easiest mission in the game. That one is in my file share, and thanks to the kindness of VirulentStrife, it has also been rendered. I'm sure you'll be able to cut through it with ease.

I'm working on two missions simultaniously at the moment, one of which is "The Package". I had the honor of meeting the mission's creator in Seattle and am eager to see how it plays out on Mythic :-)

The AA batte on ONI Sword Base is really REALLY hard. The level will start out fine, I'll kill one of the wraiths with the target locater, save the other strike until I reach the comms house. Jack the reverant, run over the elites yada yada yada.

But then, I come to the AA battle and elites and grunts are having a birthday party. There's just so many of them. It's the worst thing in the world trying to run over an elite only to get plasma pistoled by an unseen grunt then stuck fifty times. And then there's ghosts.

I really want to avoid this battle, but then you can't get the gauss hog. That would be fine, if there was another just as easy and safe way to kill the hunters.

I tried the same thing. Don't bother using the Target Locater on him, because as much as you might expect it to kill him, I've seen plenty of times where he manages to survive because the first hit ends up launching him out of the circle.

I'd say you're better off taking the AA Gun fight first by grabbing the Rocket Launcher immediately available after killing the Wraiths to give to the Marine you get with the Worthog (this Rocket Launcher is located on a hill to the right of where the Wraiths stop; it also seems to respawn once if you later backtrack from the AA Gun before completing the objective; not sure about why). Keeping the Marines who are already outside also helps because you might get one of them to get in the Worthog instead of Kat. Yes, an invincible ally is good, but Kat will still follow the Worthog (and stand by the passenger seat as if trying to get in), but once you get closer to a group of enemies, she'll serve as a distraction. It's a lot easier dealing with Elites when you have Kat distracting them while you have someone in the Worthog gunning at them and your passenger is firing rockets which seek the targets (they do that for the AI now, I was pleased to see).

Alternatively, you can take go to the Comms Tower first and make short work of the Revenant (two hits from the rocket the Marine has will destroy it; the first might completely flip it and give you an easy advantage when they try and get back in). You can also maneuver around the other building close enough for your gunner and passenger to be in range but far enough away that the Ultras won't retaliate.

Still better than you.

.....most of you, at least.

Oh hey, nice to see this up.

Hope it's good, I might try it sometime.

Wow, I can have a rocket marine? Thanks Vince. All you had to say was "rockets, on the hill." That would've solved my problem. :)

I'll try that tonight, although I'm a bit worried. We just had a power failure in Toronto (awfully windy). It came back on in like, twenty minutes, but my worst nightmare is for the power to fail right when I make it to the roof of the ONI building.

Also, extremity shooting (don't you remember in Halo 3? You see an arm of a brute sticking out, you shoot a charged plasma pistol, then quickly duck back into cover) seems to be back in Halo: Reach. In my Winter Contingency video, linked for your convenience, I kill the sword elite by shooting his arm with my plasma pistol. I tried this on ONI Sword Base; I killed the FRG General by plasma pistoling his arm. He just stood there and took it! It looks like we have a chance to complete the game, guys.

Out of curiosity, what controller layouts do my fellow mythicers use? I mean, I haven't had any problems with Recon, I just want to know if there's a more efficient layout to be using. That's why I made the hard switch from QWERTY to Dvorak. :P

Basically I use the Revenant's mortar to kill the Grunts, then I'll deal with the Elites. But before taking on the big guy make Kat drive the Revenant and she'll be ample distraction.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

The thing that makes it the hardest is the Blind skull.

That would work great, but the cowbell skull is a evil bastard. When I try that, when she doesn't get blown off the edge, she gets flipped and the revenant gets jacked.

If you seriously find the Blind Skull more inconvenient than the Iron Skull, then you are better then every single person in the mythic community combined.

EDIT: LOL! Just figured out now that the target locator has THREE strikes rather than two. Maybe that's why I've been having so much trouble with the level! Anyway, I have a strategy which sounds great:

1. After acquiring the target locator, leg it to the right, over the rock, onto the bridge.

2. Stay out of the range of the wraith and nuke it from orbit.

3. After that, sneak around back to where the wraiths are to jump on the second wraith's back and beat it to death. (Be careful about the grunt gunner; if he sees you, the wraith will turn around and you'll have to use another strike)

4. Load up your warthog with a rocket marine and a regular marine and head to the AA gun.

5. Nuke the general from orbit.

6. Wait for your nuke to recharge, then SLOWLY and DELIBERATELY move up and start killing grunts. Jump out and DMR them if you want.

7. When you see the Spirit Dropship appear, move back into the pond and target a small rock underneath where it lands.

8. This nukes the fresh troops (grunts, rangers) it drops off, making your life a hell of a lot easier.

What do you guys think?

Sounds interesting. Similar to what we did with the Spartan Laser in The Covenant, but have you tried it out yet?

Last I checked, the locater only has two shots. It's never had three any time I've played ONI:Sword Base.

It works in theory. Load up ONI Sword Base Alpha Ralley point on Mythic minus Blind and Iron and the locator will have three shots. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, when playing from mission start on regular Mythic difficulty it only has two. So I have a new theory, tested to work (on Mythic minus blind and iron):

1. After nuking one wraith and beating the other wraith to death, get your rocket hog and nuke the general as before.

2. Let Kat push up a bit.

3. Try to get your rocket marine to concentrate on the elites rather than the grunts. You need to at least get them out of the building if not killing a few of them.

4. After a certain number of covenant die, the spirit dropship will show up. At that point, IMMEDIATELY rush your wartog to the bottom of the stairs behind the building. Make sure that it's not exposed and sprint to push the button. At that point, get back to your hog by jumping off the back of the building (be careful not to fall off the cliff!) and GTFO to the comms tower.

When both objectives are completed, I find it easier to return to the base via the AA tower path. So this means if you did the comms tower last, I think it's better to go ALL THE WAY AROUND back to the AA gun.

Tyrant, I can confirm that you will get the gauss hog after turning on the comms tower if you turned on the AA gun first. You will get the gauss hog after your second objective is complete with all the Covenant around it dead. I find the comms tower easier, so I clear it out fully, but that's just me. EDIT: Oops, misread your question. To answer it succinctly: yes. (thank god)

As another option, you COULD just destroy one Wraith, kill the secondary gunner on the other one, jack the Wraith, and use it to level everything else.

AMIRITE?!?

Will test to see...

It worked on Heroic when I did yesterday's famine challenge so I don't see why not.

The only problem I can see is the Elite Ultra and his Grunt squad near the Wraiths. I have doubts as to whether Kat and the Troopers can kill them before they kill you.

Default. I used Bumper Jumper in Halo 3, and would use it in Reach, but it really cripples your Jetpack usage. I lose a bit in jumping ability, the the gain in AA usage makes up for it I think.

EDIT: LOL! Just figured out now that the target locator has THREE strikes rather than two.

I was just playing this level on normal, and noticed that it recharged back up to two shots when I got to each area. I used two shots on the wraiths, moved to the AA, suddenly had two shots again. Used them, moved to the Comms station, had two shots again! I did kill all the enemies in area before moving on, don't know if its replicable on Mythic, but if it is, having 6 shots from the Target Designator could be a big help.

BTW, is anyone else getting weird discrepancies between their saved film time and the post-game stats time? I took less than 50 minutes of actual game time (with a few pauses) to complete TotS, but the gamestats says it took over an hour!

Awesome :-)

Mythic = Legendary + all 13 skulls activated + scoring.

It needs to be done in one go per mission (in other words no dying, or using Save & Quit to cheat the system).

Have fun!
