There have been lots of posts lately when people aren't sure what they're talking about. Therefore I have prepared this for your viewing pleasure.

Chapters and clans are not the same thing

That is the most important factor. Chapters are fanclubs hosted on the bungie.net server, they might play online games but they are primarily fanclubs with extras (such as hierarchy, clever databases etc.) and are NOT clans. An example of a chapter is Chapter Founders.

Clans, on the other hand, are more select (chapters can also be composed of a select few members), but are not chapters. It is entirely possible that a clan might have backing with a chapter. Clans are a group of people that play online as a team.

More detailed guide to each:

[li]Chapters

Chapters are fanclubs that are hosted by Bungie.net and have some cool features provided. Each chapter has its own forum, news page, databases and an event calendar. Chapters are made by Founders (at the moment chapter founding is disabled), and can accumalate members (who may join via the 'join now' function). Chapters can be for any purposes, you can have a dedicated gaming or clan chapter, fun chapter, a group of friends and so on. It is up to the founder how the chapter develops, and founders may appoint staff members to help with their load. The many functions of chapters can be found on the Seventh Column page, or the Chapter Founders site.[/li]

[li]Clans

Clans are groups dedicated to gaming together, as a team. It is completely up to you how you make a clan, chances are you'll want a website where you can put information, any hierarchy, a member roster and so forth. If you have no HTML knowledge, just use a site template or site creator (an account with Freewebs comes with templates, there are other website hosts with templates as well). You'll want to know what game(s) you're going to play, preferably bungie ones =P, also have an idea of what kind of members you want (friends or some people you find across sites such as bungie, maybe specialist players). Then you'll want to recruit. You can use the classifieds as long as you follow the guidelines. If your clan isn't bungie-related then it has no purpose here anyway and it's a waste of time you reading this. You'll want an abbreviation that clan members can put before their name when playing online, and you may even want a forum (InvisionFree forums are very apt). Then you'll be set.[/li]

I hope this helps to stop mixups, and remember if people are talking about a chapter, then it is not necessarily a clan, and vice versa.
