Blarg!?

I'm been trying to find a solution to the problem with Reach's DREs. I have a refurbished launch console with a 20GB HD. I have changed my disk a total of 3 times at my local gamestop since my last reply. Each disk I've gotten were getting DREs. I believe each of those were from the first shipment.

He also mentioned that they had received "a high number" of calls regarding this issue (wouldn't be surprised if it was 50/50) and offered to send me a "known to work disc." After informing me that I would have to pay shipping he suggested that I take it back to my retailer, speak to a manager, and ensure that I get a second or third shipment copy of Halo: Reach. Hopefully everything he said was all true and not more smoke blown up our rears.

If this is true, then I need Gamestop to replace my disk when they have received their 2nd or 3rd shipment. If that doesn't work then I'll become more convinced that it is an DVD drive, or a hard drive issue. Since mine is a refurbished launch console, the laser lens my be worn down or too old and cannot read the disk.

It is possible that many launch consoles have this problem and don't have the necessary hardware or firmware to read Reach.

For the newer consoles, I imagined they wouldn't have problems with this, but it seems that they are vunerable too.

I haven't tried boiling my disk, I don't know if it even works for Reach.

I would have to send in my defective console for repair for $120... ouch ($100 via xbox.com) because my 1-yr warranty expired in August (that sucks). If I do this, the repairmen might modify the system to work. But, then I fear that I might get another refurbished launch console with the same problem.

Microsoft may be influencing me to buy the Xbox 360 Slim because of this (convienient) problem. Too bad there isn't a program where users can trade in their old system to a newer system, but Microsoft, like all major businesses, want your money. But then again, how can I guarantee that Reach or any awesome game in the future will be read properly?

The factories that make Reach copies and other games in the future need to thoroughly test out their games 'readablity' on every version of the Xbox console, from all the way back to the launch version to the latest.

I'll have to wait it out and see what will happen...

P.S I read from somewhere in the Interwebs that we are just a minority. >:(

I received a call from Microsoft, too, with a reference to my BBB complaint. I received the same offer. They want to make the situation right. I will keep you updated.

Subject: Disc Not Reading

I have a launch console that was repaired once (RROD)and to date i have had no problems with my XBOX and reading Reach. Now im hoping im not jinxing myself for saying that but i do sympathize with you all.I do believe this to be a huge screw up on both Bungies and Microsofts. In my opinion i feel that both parties need to man up (not point fingers or worry about any rules of disclosure)fix the issue and let all enjoy the fruits of your labor.Just my 2 cents and this thread needs to stay alive.Hope to matchplay with you all. I just went ahead and filed my complaint with the BBB. For anyone wishing to file their own complaint, you would go through the Alaska, Oregon, Western Washington branch. To save you from having to go through the same thing twice by going to your local one first, I suggest going straight to their site.

Hopefully the 3rd shipment will have no problems.
The store that I went to buy my Halo: Reach copy still had some Copies with the Recon Helmet so for sure they still had their first shipment. I'm going to try and look for a copy that doesn't have the Recon code in it and see if that fixes anything.

If what I say is true, then for sure the problem is the first shipment with the Recon Helmet code. I just hope that the 2nd or 3rd shipment won't have the same issue.

Me and my friend bought Reach on the same day and was planning on renewing my Gold Membership so I can play with him on XBL but on the day that I went to buy a card, my Reach stops working (3 days after getting Reach)His is still working and he said he is playing XBL with it. If the same defective discs come in the next shipment, then I don't know what to do.

I might delete all save data of Halo: Reach off of my Xbox and see if that does anything. I got the Open Tray errors and Disc Read Errors after completeing the Campaign. If deleting it will fix this, then I'm pretty lucky.

i dont get any disc error message. When the game first starts up (in space and what not) if i touch anything, it goes slightly darker and freezes, the music keeps playing though.and even if i dont touch anything it freezes later on, right after it shows a planet. After the planet, it goes completely dark with music. When it freezes, the xbox guide button doesn't even work. I've already exchanged my game once. I've paid $70 for a game, and i can't even get to the main menu. thats just -blam!- awesome

I just exchanged my game today at Walmart and a lot of the problems seemed to have gone away. Matchmaking works fine now (10 or 11 games straight I think) and the only issue I'm having is in campaign. When I die there is like a 25% chance that the whole level starts over again. Finally beat the campaign though and my Matchmaking is unhindered so far *knock on wood*. I would strongly suggest that you guys return the game to your retailer if possible, but ask to speak to a manager or someone in electronics and ask them to exchange it for a second or third shipment copy. You may have to wait a while or drive a little ways to find a retailer that still has them in stock, but you'll feel better when you finally get a working copy. Oh yeah, after going through all this I literally laughed out loud at the end of the game when Bungie gives a special thanks to their fans.

Does your disc have like a blemish on it or something? I'm thinking about exchanging mines tomorrow at the same gamestop but asking for one from their new shipment

"You could've had a V8...now it's too late!"

I just emailed Microsoft Support, and guess what? Their response was very unhelpful and had no corellation to my problem described in the email.

I had specified that all my games except for Reach work fine on my Xbox, yet they still insist that it is the Xbox or my HDD. This is complete bull-blam!-, obviously they are ignoring the circumstances with which we are experiencing.

I found that hilarious too. Oh the best part? I got a disc read error before the credits were over.

Love Bungie indeed.

If anyone doesn't feel like writing their own description for the BBB, this is what I wrote. Don't know if it's good or not, but it'll do for a quickie...

"Halo Reach is a new video game that is made for the Xbox 360 platform, which is made by Microsoft. Microsoft has certified this game for the Xbox 360 and therefore it should work on my Xbox 360 purchased in 2006. After buying Halo Reach I found that it in fact does not work with my Xbox 360 console and is unplayable because of "Disc Read Errors". Microsoft has acknowledged that this is an issue that they are at fault for, but insist that I pay to have my console "fixed" to work with a product they have already stated that it worked with. This is an ethically unacceptable practice and I feel that Microsoft should perform the repairs for free and also pay for shipping."

  • 09.28.2010 8:47 PM PDT

Just thought I'd let you all know I have formally submitted bbb complaints in Washington state against Microsoft and bungie and here in Ohio against game stop for " knowingly selling a defective product which is advertised to work exclusively with the xbox 360" furthermore, any attempt to resolve sd issue us met with a "send $120 and your working console" in an obvious attempt to extort customers and/or force them into purchasing new consoles (an obvious anti trust infraction) I also sd that unless this matter is resolved promptly I will be filing suit in federal court within the weeks end. I just graduated law school and willpower be filing both class action and antitrust lawsuits within the next week pm if interested

Yes I'm always right.

Multi-accounts are for cowards and weaklings who don't measure up to their peers.

As someone with a considerable amount of experience with solving puzzles, technical and otherwise, I can tell you that there's more here than just random malfunctioning discs or consoles. I rented Reach and am unable to access specific chapters in the campaign. Matchmaking in all its respects appears to be working fine with the exception of co-op. I have taken the game back to the store twice and have been given a different disc each time. This means:

A. I am the unluckiest (fill in the blank) on Earth and got three identically messed up discs.

B. My console is suffering from a malfunction that only manifests itsef at specific points in Halo: Reach

C. There is a technical flaw in the game itself.

Hmm. Tough call.

I really like halo reach =) I like some other games too ^.^

Please everyone play nice =3

I have youtube ^.^v
http://www.youtube.com/user/TsumiyaUra

Hey everyone.. after having the game for two weeks i was playing fire fight and a "failed to write profile info" messaged appeared in game. It was a reach style text box not the xbox guide message style.

So i check my profile and ALL of my gamertags info, motto, profile pic was gone as if i had just made that gamertag. vibration was even back on but i always have it off :/

So i finish out the match and it doesnt even show the credit awarding screen it immediately says disc read error and i am back at the dashboard unable to access my memory through system information.

I turned off my 360 for a little bit then turned it back on and i could play the game again but the load time for the intro was LONG. Also something odd that happened was that the game thought it was my first time playing o.O It awarded me the 5000 that you initially get and it also said "New items in the armory" since of course i am an advanced rank so it showed all of the unlocked armor as if i never bought it(there were stars by everything) but thankfully i didnt have to re buy anything.

So after re creating my spartan, setting my options, buton layouts and turning of vibration i finally go back into matchmaking. First game all 4 on the other team disappeared at the same time giving the win t my team o.O Then after my 2nd game it did the SAME disc read error from the firefight game.. but this time i didn get the profile write error thank god. So i turned off my xbox and started this thread :/

I emailed xbox.com but from what i read here they arent very helpful with the issue..

Anyone else have a similar experience as this ?

  • 09.28.2010 11:02 PM PDT

I sent my Xbox in to get fixed (I was one of the few early ones to get it done for free). I shipped it to the repair center in Mesquite, Texas. The Xbox being sent back is coming from Mexico......So I must be getting some other refurbished Xbox. It must have been cheaper for them to send me a completely different box than to fix my current one. The only thing I'm sure of, is that.....how do they say it....-blam!- will hit the fan if the Xbox I get back does not work perfectly!! I'll post here again once I actually receive it.

  • 09.28.2010 11:44 PM PDT

It seems that more and more people are having unexpected errors with the game. I don't think this error is related to the one that made this thread so popular, but I now think there are multiple errors with this game.

This happened to me once. It gave me a scare at first.

I now know it is my Xbox that is dying on me. I tried to install the game on my hard drive to see if I could find a workaround, but just got the green screen from the start. I then uninstalled it, cleared the system cache, and deleted all files associated with Reach just to make sure. I booted it up again to try matchmaking, firefight, and forge. Not campaign, it no longer loads properly.

Then the strangest thing happened!...

Matchmaking, firefight, and forge do not work anymore! It's DREs this and DREs that. Freezing here and Freezing there! My game is virtually unplayable. Now I'm pissed! >:(

"*Sigh* ...Well, I guess I'll play something else tonight." I said to myself. I put MW2 in aaaannnndddd...

FREEZE!...

: \

"Ok... how about ODST?..."

...loading...

...loading...

Disk Read Error...

( :O

"ZOMGWTFBBQ!!! /angry" D:< Not exactly what I said, but it gets the point across.

Well... this night, my console's is offically retarted.

THE END.

Got to get a new Xbox...

Has anyone else from New Zealand had this problem and/or contacted Microsoft? They quoted me $200 to "fix" my Xbox as its out of warranty. Stuff that. I followed all the steps on here for fixing the game, bar boiling my disc, to no avail. I followed Bungies advice and private messaged "Urk" who I must admit did reply and did admit it was a mess and said he would try to help....had no word since.
So after all the posts and failed attempts Im still left with a expensive coffee coaster....bugger.

Well, I've had some success getting my game to work, so I thought I'd share.

I called the retailer from whom I purchased Reach two weeks ago, to check if they'd had other complaints and to see if they would take the disc back if it was the. Problem. The lady on the other end of the phone, Erin (or Aaron if it was a guy with a high voice), mentioned that it might be something to do with the save game.

Having installed the game to the hard drive previously, I uninstalled it, moved the save game and files that I wanted to keep to a memory stick, then removed the hard drive, just to be sure.

I rebooted the Xbox, put the disc in, and hey presto! I've got the game back. I turned it off, stuck the hard drive in sans save games, and it worked again. Then, to test it even further, I put the memory stick in and restarted. Again, it worked fine. I've yet to test the freshly copied saves to hard drive version of the process, but it seems to be all good.

I'm not sure how much mileage you'll get from this yourselves, but hopefully there is a little light at the end of the tunnel.

Cheers,
C0h3n
