So once again....some people are getting replacement discs and this is fixing the problem...some are going down the BBB path and this is working for them...what about the people overseas? Microsoft wont give me a free repair as my consoles out of warranty and we dont have anything like BBB here in NZ. Any ideas? 3 weeks now with a dud game and no help from Microsoft or bungie. :(
Your SOL mate. We here in the States can't really help you lads in NZ. You'd have to get on the MS site and see if you can't get any info there.

Were lucky in New Zealand because we some of the the best consumer protection laws in the world so if you give microsoft an earful about the Consumer Guarantees Act and tell them how easy it is for you to take them to the small claims court (where you would most likely win). They will be more than happy to help you for free.

Yeah this is crap my disc is reading either and guess what guys I have a 360 slim... 250gig... it happened recently going for monument for your sins... at the end of the package it froze during loading the cinematic and well ever since then has been -blam!-

I called the 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and talked to a guy, basically he ran me through the same system checks that you can read off of microsofts webpage. He seemed to not have a clue that this wasn't a localized problem. After playing his "game" and running through the checks again, he put me on hold to ask a co-worker and told me that my system, 20GB Launch console, wouldn't run Halo: Reach because my hard drive was too small. I asked him what microsoft was planning on doing about the subject and again he had no clue. So basically as stated before by other users, send your console in if under warranty, buy a new console, or even try buying a bigger harddrive for your console. In the end Microsoft screwed the pooch on this one and is gonna wait until a massive amount of people call the number and complain, well hopefully. Play long... play hard.

I signed up on Bungie.net just for this problem, DRE on matchmaking and campaign. I called Xbox Support to get this issue resolved only to be asked to spend $119 to get my console fixed. I refused their offer and they called the next day to see if I changed my mind. I refused again waiting to see if there was any fix to this issue on this thread. I have also sent urk a PM and got a simple "got it" reply. Has anyone else gotten any additional info from urk?

Every other game I have works fine as this is the first time I have seen this error. This is my second copy of Reach, and I have verified the disc works just fine in other 360s. The second disc had a DRE in the same place as the first. As it appears there is no solution other than to send my perfectly operational console in along with $119, and there is no way I'll be doing that. I fear the only solution is contacting the BBB and filing a complaint. Oddly enough I can play *one* game of matchmaking if I hit the guide button, sign out of my profile, sign into another profile, exit the menu, pick the storage device, press the guide button, sign out of the profile, and sign into my profile. I'll play one game, and if I attempt to play another I'll get a DRE after the final countdown.

I'm guessing my post went unnoticed. Read page 104 and wake up! There will be no wonder patch! Your console is broken. Swapping discs won't help, if you think it does that is because your playing from a cold boot, you will still have the same prob 30 mins later, you need a new xbox!

You work for MS by any chance? One game that doesnt work out of 100's and 1000's doesnt mean your console is broke. I can live without one game working 100%. But you can bet that i wont buy any MS branded or published game ever again.

Reach will be a distant memory when GT5 reaches my house

Ok, today I'm going to swap my disc for a another copy.
If I was able to play for 3 days straight, finish the campaign, and all of my other games work, then I'm sure that its not my Xbox.

Me and my cousin both have an Xbox 360 Arcade system, both manufactured in 2009, and bought Halo: Reach on the same day because he lives in Delano and I live in San Jose and thought that we can play each other when he goes back to Delano on Xbox Live, and I contacted him if his copy still works and he says that it works. We both bought our copies from MicroCenter and I got to have 3 days worth of custom games and completed campaign.

If after getting my disc swapped for a different one, it doesn't work, then its been a good run Bungie. This is disappointing on your part. You could at least adress the problem instead of acting like nothing happened.

I'm not wasting 200$ to get my Xbox 360 "fixed". I'm not paying any money to fix my Xbox 360 just to play 1 game and since I've opened my Halo:Reach copy, I can't get a money refund. All I can do now is exchange the disc and hope that this problem will not occur anymore.

I'll post back when I get my new copy.

mine takes forever to read and now my other games that used to work dont anymore.

Like you, I was happy that Urk seemed to want to help us fix this, so I PM'ed him per his instructions. This was the reply I received:

Posted by: Urk
"Apologies for the mishandling. Forwarding it along. Hopefully, you'll hear back soon. :("

He replied last Saturday, the 25th. I figured that I would hear something from someone after that. On the 29th, I sent him another message requesting more information--who did he forward this complaint to? Microsoft? Bungie execs? I also wanted to know how they were going to contact me and what time frame I could expect on the issue. It is now Oct. 2nd, and I haven't heard anything else from him.

I filed with the BBB yesterday, and the issue is awaiting a response from MS. Apparently MS has 90 days to respond, so this may take a while. I would encourage anyone experiencing problems to file with the BBB as soon as possible, to cut down on the amount of time it may ultimately take to resolve this.

Well...for the record I'll let you know my problem and how I fixed it. The game was working fine for a couple of weeks and then it started making a grinding noise in the 360 drive. Menus would freeze and it was starting to get annoying. I checked the disc and there was a crack in the center plastic ring. I tried installing it to the HDD...didn't work ("the disc may be scratched..." error). After giving up on that I just thought eh I guess I can deal with the noise and menu problems.

A day passed and the matchmaking menu wouldn't let me "start matchmaking" so I went over to a friends house with my 360 and installed Reach to my HDD. Ever since I'm having no problems

-If any of you had this problem of the 360 drive cracking the inner plastic ring try this solution.

note: it's ridiculous that this could happen period

  • 10.02.2010 11:20 AM PDT

Maybe somethings wrong with your Xbox if you've checked and nothings wrong maybe you should get a refund or an exchange from the store you bought it from.

Subject: Disc Not Reading

Halo Reach stopped working. Tried other discs. Same issues. My Xbox has been sent for repairs now. I was wondering if Halo Reach would damage it again when my xbox comes back somehow?

  • 10.02.2010 1:37 PM PDT

Have a fishy stick!

You know I tried everything. I'm not willing to pay $100 for a repair. I don't know what to do at this point except ask for a replacement disc.

-blam!- sucks.

  • 10.02.2010 4:44 PM PDT

Ok I have had this problem since the game came out. After every game or on loading screens for all game types, it goes to the please clean disc and dashboards. I've been searching around and the 2 main causes apparently are the hardware AND little air pockets in the disc. I have no idea how the second works out but I got a replacement disc finally and so far none of the previous problems are reoccuring. Best thing to do I would think is get your disc replaced.

Update from my post above on this page:

I exchanged my copy for a different one and guess what?
I got to play Halo: Reach again. I've played a couple of Custom Games, Forge, and 1 round of Firefight and I have had no problems so far. Lets see how long I can play this game without walking into a DRE.

  • 10.02.2010 6:06 PM PDT

This appears to be a console-specific issue.

The affected consoles seem to be overwhelming be first-generation original Xbox 360 Pro consoles (the ones with the 20GB HDDs), which presumably probably includes a number of Core consoles among the affected, too. I have a launch day console which plays Reach without issue.

Swapping out the game disc MAY work in much the same way a scratched disc may sometimes work if you try it enough times, or it may just freeze at different times. To an affected console, the Reach disc reads as if it is "scratched" and the placement of said "scratches" appears to vary from game disc to game disc.

Repairing/replacing (read: upgrading) your console is the only "true" fix.

There is a 90-day warranty on each Halo: Reach disc under Microsoft's disc replacement policy. If you want to give another game disc a shot because you don't have the funds to repair or replace your console, call 1-800-4MY-XBOX, perform the troubleshooting, and get your disc replaced if the steps don't resolve the issue.

If the problem is widespread/depending on the root cause and/or solution, Microsoft may begin offering courtesy repairs/replacements as they did with ODST. I encourage everyone in this situation to keep an eye on this topic for updates as I'm sure it'll be announced here if Microsoft's stance on the matter changes.

tl;dr version
The only reliable work-around at this point: Install Reach to your HDD using a non-affected console. If you somehow don't have any friends who have Xboxes, your local GameStop may be able to help you out with this.

After three weeks of working fine the same thing finally started happening to me as well. I've been using the Halo 3 Edition Xbox and don't really feel the need to buy a newer console just for a single game. It's been a fun run, but since Bungie wants to end their final game with a bang like this I'll simply return the game tomorrow. It's a pretty big disappointment but at least there are many other games coming out soon, most of which will hopefully lack this ridiculous problem. Maybe it's time to crank up the Playstation 3 some more again if Microsoft in general is going to start pulling stuff like this off.

Subject: Disc Not Reading? Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for support (see page 35).

I just returned my previous Reach game that was freezing and got a new copy. Same problem. All happening on the Arcade system. Bungie and Microsoft are a joke. Maybe the next Halo game will be fine seeing Bungie will be gone. Money hungry companies!

I now offically have full intentions on filing this lawsuit. I am in dire need of help with orchistrating this collaboration so if anyone is whiling to put the time and effort into this problem please feel free to contact me through mail on this forum.

-Thx
ZERO

FYI Bungie has posted an article on the october 1st update on the home page saying they can't do anything about it. So I fully plan on taking immediate legal action

  • 10.02.2010 10:50 PM PDT

Today I contacted Microsoft in order to get my halo reach copy working on my old xbox 360 core, which by the way plays any other game, and after I tried another copy of halo reach on my console with the same freezing-unreadable disc message, I decided to give them a call, so they told me that I need to get my xbox 360 repaired, and since I no longer have guarantee for my system, it would cost me $100 extra for playing a $60 game that should be playable like any other game, I don't know how they expect me to pay for a game that also needs to get either a new xbox or get repaired, this is bull-blam!-.

Btw, legal action? Don't blamming kid yourself. xfd

You're going to have to wait for Microsoft to start offering free out-of-warranty repairs a la ODST and install the game to your HDD for the time being using a non-affected console, or get a new Xbox. :/

  • 10.03.2010 12:40 AM PDT

I have the same problem, only my Xbox is a pretty new model with a silver metallic disc tray (Xbox Pro). Tough my disc worked on someone elses Xbox, other games do work on my Xbox and it barely has any scratches (way les than my other games) I'm not sure if sending it to germany will be of any help because other people seem to only have this problem with the older Xboxes

  • 10.03.2010 7:27 AM PDT

Again it's ridiculous that this is the "Special Thanks" Bungie gives to their fans on their final game. Especially when some of us have been around since the big fat black Xbox Halo: CE days. I once took solace in the fact I had the Halo 3 Edition 360 and now it doesn't work on a HALO game. Pretty ironic it's laughable. So I guess you're welcome Bungie, good job at knocking over a couple of saps like ourselves and telling us to jog off as a fix.

Hope that whole world domination thing works out for you guys.

  • 10.03.2010 8:23 AM PDT

I feel like both bungie and microsoft has tooken a railway spike and hammered it down my left eye. (metaphorically speaking)
