I just got the new slim xbox 360 on August 1 and never had a issue until Halo Reach. I too am getting the disc error crap. I've already gone back to gamestop and exchanged for a new one and it still gives me the disc error.

It's not just the older consoles - its the new ones too!
Everywhere I read people keep saying the older ones have the problem!

ITS NOT TRUE! MICROSOFTS NEW SLIM IS EFFECTED TOO!

I have had similar problems with my disk....It comes up saying its a DVD. I have to open and close the tray like 20 times b4 it tells me to play game what should I do(take it back and get a new copy or wait?)

If you haven't tried swapping it yet, it's worth a try. It PROBABLY won't fix your issue, but it won't hurt to try it. You can either take it back to the store or contact MS for a warranty swap on it.

I'm having the same problem so I went to my friend to install halo reach on my hard drive with his console (a pretty new Arcade). And guess what, it didn't work, in fact reach didn't work with my 15GB hard drive in it, but it did work with his 60GB hard drive in it. Luckily, he had an old hard drive lying around (same type as mine) so i was almost sure it was going to work with that one, but, in case you didn't come up with that yourself, it didn't. I even reformatted my hard drive (all my saved games, gone!).
Now because of what i found out at my friend's, i tried to play the game without the hard drive in the Xbox, but that didn't work either, now this is making no blamming sense to me. Someone? Anyone!? Respond!

I have this problem too. Im pretty sure its the firmware on the disc drive that comes with the original Xbox 360 (yes i have this model)its really lame that MS is charging, us who have thier warranties expired, money to get this "fix" which is just the people at the repair center plugging in a cord to the drive, pressing a button on a computer, and waiting five minutes. I doubt they are going to do anything with the actual hardware of the system.

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head, The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls, the number of dead's the rising of the horns, ahead
From the dawn of time to the end of days I will have to run, away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste of the blood on my lips, again

This is what happens to people who have, John chapter 6, verse 66 in their name....

All you have to do to fix it is go to your friend who has an xbox that runs reach, take your hard drive and put it into his and download reach onto it. Then put it back into your xbox and voila, it works.

I saw a post a few pages back and i tried it and it worked.

TRY IT IT DOES WORK

If I have a problem with this again tomorrow, I will be forced to file a BBB complaint myself. I actually got a disk read error the first time I tried playing this within 30 seconds on campaign.

  • 10.03.2010 10:15 PM PDT

im a gub gub giant

I have an Xbox 360 Elite, and I think that it is my disc that is broken. It worked fine for about 2 weeks and then I tried to play campaign again. It just wouldn't load Winter Contingency at first. I could play every other campaign mission, and I was fine with that because I still had matchmaking and forge.

I tried playing some matchmaking and I can get into game lobbies and vote for maps, but it wont load any of them at all now. It just registers a new round of voting and then I get kicked after about 2 times.

File a complain with the BBB, once you've done that, call the BBB 3 days later and talk to a rep and they will forward your email so it processes quicker and you will be called by Xbox within 48 hours of your call to the BBB and they will offer you a way to resolve this issue quickly.

J23: Ready 4 Anything
We must move forward. Learn, Improve, Evolve

It's getting more annoying than ever. It makes the game almost impossible to play. Things on the display don't show up, can't hear anything and can kick me to dashboard before a game starts. It's starting to make me stop playing since it happens so frequently. This needs to be fixed or a way to prevent it from happening frequently

Well.... I exchanged disks at gamestop and for about 3 days it worked great... well guess what... it has now stopped working.... and getting DRE sooooooooooo i am going to try to take it to my brothers house and his xbox is working fine running reach with no problems so i am going to try to install it at his house on my HDD and then run it back at my house...

Installing game onto your hdd on another xbox does not work as the game can only be played on the console it was installed on.

So that idea was shot down in flames

Lol why would you possibly want to install your game on someone else's HDD? My 360 cracked my disc and what I did was I went over to a friends house and installed his copy of Reach onto my HDD. It's working perfectly for me and I'm using my own cracked Reach disc with no problems.

  • 10.04.2010 10:39 AM PDT

Well, i installed MY copy of Reach onto MY hdd using HIS xbox, i had already completed MY copy of Reach on HIS xbox with no issues, not a single DRE but if i try to play co-op campaign or certain single player levels on MY xbox, then its DRE time.

Game will start if i am on the dashboard and then put disc in but it plays the game from disc, not hdd.

So it does not work

I sent my xbox off for repair aka 'Reach tweaking'. I just got it back with a standard letter saying that due to the time involved in completeing the service they have decided to replace my xbox. I have tested it and it managed to get through a cut scene that failed every time before so hopefully its fixed.

I filed my BBB complaint last week. Three days after, BBB told me they had forwarded the complaint to microsoft. Two days after that, an xbox support employee contacted me and after I explained the situation and that my warranty was void, I was offered a courtesy repair and a new Halo Reach disk. I accepted the offer, and I will get a refurbished xbox and new game in a week. The xbox support employee was very nice and understanding about the problem, he said that Microsoft knows that there's something wrong but don't yet know exactly what's wrong or how to fix it.

Just got off of the phone with a MS rep and this is the same solution that was offered to me. They are also going to be replacing my box, my feeling was that they don't know what the problem is yet and so they want to dissect the broken ones to figure out what's screwing them up.

I will be getting another Pro console and copy of the game disc at no cost. MS was even courteous enough to give me the option of having the new console shipped immediately, provided that I leave my credit card with them so they can charge it if they don't receive the broken one within a few weeks of me getting the new one. I think that's reasonable, if they didn't have any collateral then someone could just steal the new box.

My rep stated that they did not have any contingencies in place but they are just starting to realize this is a problem. This seems unlikely given that MS support had that memo stating console repairs will not be free, but I think our complaints to the BBB have worked.

Anyone new to this thread, here's what you need to do:
1. Try replacing the disc (this solved the problem for a few people).
2. After a few attempts, if the problem persists, call the 1-800 number.
3. If they tell you they will not replace your console for free, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I was contacted within about 5 business days of filing the complaint and MS resolved the issue for me.
