Subject: Disc Not Reading

I just received my replacement Reach from Microsoft. I looked at the disc and didn't notice any kind of blemish on the disc like what was on my old one. So far it hasn't crashed on any of it's old spots. I would tell you guys if at all possible to try and get a replacement disc from Microsoft. I'll update if anything else happens.
How long did it take you to get the disc?

That only works for a few people. I've tried it and it didn't help my game out at all.

A buddy of mine had the same problem and he has the new slim xbox. I watched the error come up then decided to just try signing him out of live then signing back in and it worked for him with no problems yet. Hope this helps cause everyone deserves to play Reach!

I too have had this "disc wont read" error but have found another solution. I have the original 20GB HDD launch xbox and the disc wouldnt read after I played the first full level. Tried a zillion things to no avail. After I cleared the system cache - it worked immediately. After testing it 3 more times, the error came up again, after which I cleared the system cache again and it worked. Try clearing the system cache. I hope this helps!

I filed my BBB complaint last week. Three days after, BBB told me they had forwarded the complaint to microsoft. Two days after that, an xbox support employee contacted me and after I explained the situation and that my warranty was void, I was offered a courtesy repair and a new Halo Reach disk. I accepted the offer, and I will get a refurbished xbox and new game in a week. The xbox support employee was very nice and understanding about the problem, he said that Microsoft knows that there's something wrong but don't yet know exactly what's wrong or how to fix it.

Just got off of the phone with a MS rep and this is the same solution that was offered to me. They are also going to be replacing my box, my feeling was that they don't know what the problem is yet and so they want to dissect the broken ones to figure out what's screwing them up.

I will be getting another Pro console and copy of the game disc at no cost. MS was even courteous enough to give me the option of having the new console shipped immediately, provided that I leave my credit card with them so they can charge it if they don't receive the broken one within a few weeks of me getting the new one. I think that's reasonable, if they didn't have any collateral then someone could just steal the new box.

My rep stated that they did not have any contingencies in place but they are just starting to realize this is a problem. This seems unlikely given that MS support had that memo stating console repairs will not be free, but I think our complaints to the BBB have worked.

Anyone new to this thread, here's what you need to do:
1. Try replacing the disc (this solved the problem for a few people).
2. After a few attempts, if the problem persists, call the 1-800 number.
3. If they tell you they will not replace your console for free, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I was contacted within about 5 business days of filing the complaint and MS resolved the issue for me.

Same here. Wrote the complaint Monday night. Friday I got an email from the BBB saying they had sent it over to MS. Today I got an email from a guy named Mike in Xbox support that they were trying to contact me. I called him and they are setting up a repair for the console as well as exchanging the game disc. I didn't get the advance return option, though. Too bad, I probably would have jumped on it just so I wouldn't have to do completely without for a few weeks.

IW, do you know if they preauthorized the full amount on your card or did they just take down the number for later? I am wondering if I should email Mike back to inquire about the possibility.

Received my console back and the disc which gave constant disc errors on the console I sent in now works perfectly. Not a single disc error with this xbox.

Okay, filed a complaint to the BBB

Now we play the waiting game

The same exact thing happened to me and I went for the pre ship. He said they only authorize $1.00 to verify it is an active card.(ha) I should be receiving a refurbished console tomorrow. They usually send them in @7 days? I would call and ask. When it is your TV viewing system on top of gaming its a pain to be without it. I will let you know if it is in working order. We also have to send back the disc. But they sent another one already to replace that one.

I had that problem with my first generation Xbox 360 console. I keep one at my parents' home so when I come back, I just have to bring my hard drive to play my games. My Halo Reach disc works just fine on my Modern Warfare 2 Special Edition console, but not on the 1st-gen 360. I may give that one away and buy the 360 Slim.

I really do hope they offer the advance shipping option right off the bat with they call me because I am not getting off the phone without it.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Take a look at the BBB's entry on Microsoft... pretty obvious where the BBB gets a large portion of their funding? That's probably why this wasn't dealt with when it happened to ODST.

I'll wait for Bungie's next cross-platform title/franchise.

Signing in and out worked for me too, although it does not work 100% every time.

  • 10.05.2010 4:05 AM PDT

what time does this update come out?

  • 10.05.2010 4:16 AM PDT

Well........ I have an update.... i went home yesterday going to take my box to my brother's house and install Reach on my HD from his xbox and low and behold guess what happened... Before i left my house i got the dreaded RROD!

So i went out and bought a slim last night and WOW is all i can say.... this thing is amazing.... quiet slick looking super fast and has wifi so no damn Ethernet cable in my way... oh yea.... it also has HDMI... so i am set people just set me back 199 bucks

  • 10.05.2010 4:24 AM PDT

I don't think there was any official word on a date or time for the update, just some random guy saying it's today.. Like I already said the patch won't fix dre, only the 4gb issues n things like that.

Subject: Disc Not Reading

My Halo3 XBox (Green) Console started giving me the "Reading...Open Tray" problem during "Left4Dead." I had been playing L4D for a week or so without problems. I tried several of my other disks that had always worked and the console wouldn't read them anymore either. I played lots of XBox Live demos before buying "Halo: Reach." After the midnight launch, I rushed home with my new disk. OMG! I had forgotten about the problem. It would not read that night. The next day, it finally read Reach after a hundred+ attempts (honest, easily over 100 tries). I had already tried all the MS online fixes (the one I had high hopes for was the "clear cache" option), nothing worked. I left my XBox on once the game loaded again for a couple weeks and planned to never turn it off until I stopped playing Reach. But during a BTB match, when the game stopped in the middle of play (like it had done so often since the Reach launch) and showed the red team/blue team "starting game 0:00" screen, the game NEVER restarted. I waited for a while then walked away, leaving it as is. I figured even if I got killed again and again after the game resumed, I would still get a few points toward Warrant Officer 2. After a few hours of the red team/blue team screen I finally turned off my console since the controller was entirely disabled, knowing what I was in for. I have not been able to get Reach to read again since. MS wants $100 to fix this? Why wait for MS to fix it, then buy back my own refurbished console for $100 when GameStop sells them for the same price? I know I won't get any results from this post--just venting.

Subject: Disc Not Reading? Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for support (see page 35).

Well, I now am a member of the G a y lo: Reach(around) club. When I first bought the game I had to have my disk drive open if Reach was in it when I started the console in order for it to boot up. Reach would then work fine, save a few audio glitches. Reach failed on me on the 3rd of October 2010 with the green screen and DRE. I am appalled at the fact there is no official response from Microsoft nor Bungie. Sad, sad, sad. I will be joining the Covenate ASAP in order to impale everyone of Microsoft's and Bungie's employees with my plasma sword!

After exchanging Halo: Reach 2(two) times I now have a working disc. Let us all hope this one lasts longer than two weeks. I am still not happy with the non-existent official response from either corporation. However, Halo: Reach is too awesome of a game not to play, so I will let my loathesome feelings subside for now...for now.

Another thing that may help that worked for me was taking my hard drive out and playing my profile from my memorycard. This however only works with single player campaign. When i want to play multiplayer i have to put my hard drive back in, otherwise i will get disk read errors when playing multiplayer.

  • 10.05.2010 10:50 AM PDT

The problem is the lens in the DVD drive. It has become slightly misaligned. It becomes more apparent with Halo Reach because its a big game and the lens as to work harder than usual than other games. Over time other games will get this error. Microsoft and Bungie know this, but wont come out and say it. Microsoft has a bad rep for hardware failures and don't want to ruin their reputation still further. The want to keep it on a person to person basis which is why they are saying nothing more other then to call them.

In times of darkness it is the blind that best leads us....in an age of insanity let the madmen be our guides.

NOOOOOOOOOO , damn, are you serious? i was gonna sell my 360 and purchase a slim, i figured the 250 gigs were fine. I really hope you joking... (FYI: Everyone, and I mean EVERY1 who has this issue should contact (not the BBB) but the attorney General's office (same as BBB but obviously adds more pressure) im filing my complaint asap. In fact i work for the state (PA) so I have access to the complaint forms, if you need one just email me.
