In times of darkness it is the blind that best leads us....in an age of insanity let the madmen be our guides.

So is this true for the Xbox S as well? Where did you hear this?? And if this is the case then this is fraud, especially in charging ppl to replace these doomed consoles. If what you say is true then I will not hesistate to go to PS3, bcuz basically ur saying the more I play, the faster it degrades. I need to confirm this

IW, do you know if they preauthorized the full amount on your card or did they just take down the number for later? I am wondering if I should email Mike back to inquire about the possibility.

I made sure to ask if they were going to put a large credit hold on the card, my rep said they just authorize a $1 hold to ensure the card is valid. I just checked my account and the hold amount is indeed $1. I would write Mike and request this option so you're not out a box for the next few weeks, just make sure he was just going to put a similar hold on your card.

Yes, I have a new Xbox 360 Slim that I got on August 1st.
When playing Halo Reach the sound cuts out and then the
disc error pops up sending me to the dashboard.
It's deeply pissing me off - this is bull. Alot of people
keep saying this problems on the older consoles but NO!

THEY ARE DEAD WRONG! THIS PROBLEM EFFECTS THE NEW CONSOLES TOO!

In the mean time I picked up Alan Wake to kill time until
they get a patch or a system update available.

Bungie and Microsoft need to come out with a freaking response
soon about what they have learned and what they are going to do about this mess.

YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE WAITING!

I called customer support, no help at all. All they said was "Find your receipt and get another copy." Never had any problems with any of my other games i've bought, just Reach. REALLY hope they come out with a fix soon cause Bungie is getting on my last nerve right now. Of course Microsoft tried to say it might be a default in my console but I specifically told the guy it was only Reach that was doing it. Played it perfect since the day it came out until now.... which an update just came out today for Reach which is making me wonder WTF Bungie did to screw up this time?

So I did some research with some guys that use and know jtags, Linux software specialists, Microsoft software specialists, and people that mod xbox 360's. The problem is not 1 problem, it is many problems. People that are getting a disc read error, that alone can be several different solutions and causes, so that is why people who made a complaint to the BBB are given a free Xbox with faster shipping than normal, and don't send their Xbox in until they get the new one. I'm hoping my Xbox from Microsoft comes tomorrow, it was shipped last night, and I will be sending my Xbox 360 right away. I will try to keep you guys updated, I will try to get in touch with someone at Microsoft who may know more information about this problem, but for right now the best thing for you to do is to send a complain to the BBB, after 3 or 4 days call the BBB, talk to a rep, tell them the situation about your complaint and that you haven't gotten a reply yet. The rep will most likely let someone know that your waiting for a response, then that person will contact Microsofts station where they take care of complains, and once it reaches them you will receive an email and phone call from them to discuss the situation and what they can do for you.

It seems like a long process, but you guys it's almost been A MONTH so just file a complaint to the BBB, wait 2-3 days, call the BBB, talk to a rep and you should get a call within a few days after that and within about a week after calling the BBB you will have an Xbox in your hands that will work.

For all of you that are hoping for a fix, there will not be a fix, this is a hardware/firmware/software issue, like I said this is because of several different causes and several solutions which will make an update only available to certain people. Unless this is all software related (which is most likely isn't) then there might be a fix in another month or 2. So don't sit there waiting for a fix, send a complaint to the BBB and follow the steps.

1. File a complaint to the BBB.org (to the Washington, Alaska,Oregon facility)

2. After 2-3 days of filing the complaint, call the BBB and talk to a rep about getting a reply to your complaint 907-562-0704 that is the number I used

3. They will notify someone that your waiting a reply

4. Wait 24-72 hours for a call and email from Xbox and they will offer you a quick solution to getting you an operating Xbox

I was one of the first, if not the very first person to do this, my Xbox 360 will be arriving tomorrow, and then I will send them my old Xbox 360 and Halo Reach disc so they can do testing on it to figure out the problem. This is the fastest solution right now, this is what you should be doing if you want this problem solved.

TL;DR

For all my mess with Halo: Reach, MSFT is sending a replacement console, game and giving me another year of warranty.

The Long Version

I'm posting this in the hopes that you all might have some luck in getting a free repair from MSFT with respect to out
of warranty XBOX consoles that won't play Halo: Reach because of a Disc Not Reading error. A week or so ago I twittered
@XboxSupport with the following:

"Please tell me why I need to pay $120 to fix my DVD drive to play Halo: Reach when others have gotten the repair for free?"

They replied with:

"I would suggest that you replace the game disk instead. ^SM"

I replied with:

"I have. Twice. No luck."

They replied with:

"Have you contacted phone support about this yet? ^SM"

I replied with:

"That's who wanted me to pay for the DVD drive."

They replied with:

"Hmm that's odd. Can you DM me your GT? ^SM"

They started following me and I DM'd them my Gamertag. The next DM I got from @XboxSupport told me that someone would be contacting me
directly from support in the next day. I did get an initial contact e-mail from someone in Xbox Support. I replied with the following:

"Thank you for following up.

The issue is with regards to not being able to play Halo: Reach on my XBOX 360. Here's a synopsis:

I received Halo: Reach from Amazon.com on launch day. At first the disc came up as a DVD. However, I was able to restart the 360
and get the game to play. Obviously I played a bit of the game and multiplayer as you can tell from my achievements. However,
I would continually get "Disc Not Readable" errors causing me to have to restart playing the campaign. I also tried playing
through the campaign and after the chapters, saving, exiting to the main menu, and continuing my game. However, I did get to a
point where after almost 5 hours of play-through on the campaign, the game froze again with a "Disc Not Readable" error and
all my progress and save was lost from the game.

This is when I returned the first disc to Amazon.com and had them send me a second disc. The second disc I received exhibits
the same "Disc Not Readable" issues as indicated above.

It seems like this is a problem, however small, but it's not known what is the definite root cause. There's been no indication
as far as I can tell on whether or not this is disc issue or XBOX issue. This is the forum thread on Bungie.net that I am looking at:

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=48970376&p ostRepeater1-p=1

It's 96 pages long as of now.

I tried all the resolutions another support person from @XboxSupport pointed me at: cleaning the disc, installing to HD,
clearing the HD cache, etc. None of these resolved the "Disc Not Readable" issues or freezing with the game. The solutions
I tried were detailed here:

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/kb.aspx?id=9107 98&lcid=1033&category=gamesandmedia

The game does not work as advertised on my XBOX 360 and I cannot afford to spend $60 on a game and $120 on repairing the
DVD drive (if that IS the issue) when it seems as if a free repair was offered and then rescinded.

Hope this helps."

After that, we had a follow-up conversation via phone and I explained as in the e-mail that the game did not work as advertised
on my Xbox. The long and short of our conversation is that they wanted me to send in my Xbox along with the Halo: Reach disc
so they could further diagnose the issue. The repair would be free of charge, I would have a new disc and I would also be getting a
1 year extension of the warranty for my Xbox console for the trouble.

So, that's where things are at now. I talked to the person in Xbox Support again this evening and they are sending me a
console advance so I just have to send back my bork3d console once the new one arrives. So, I won't be without an Xbox
for any amount of time. I also have to send the 3rd Halo: Reach disc back and they'll send another disc along.

I'll follow up once I actually have the new console and a new disc. All hope isn't lost. Obviously, YMMV.

Thanks! I emailed him yesterday morning and he did not reply. I still haven't received my mailing label for the disc anyways. If I do not hear back from him by this afternoon I will call him back.

Don't worry, Medal of Honor and COD come out soon, so Bungie can go screw themselves! We know those games won't screw their customers over. Goodbye Bungie, thanks for the headaches!!!

  • 10.06.2010 7:51 AM PDT

Guy offered to replace my console with a new one, which was a nice offer but my fiancée and I use it too much for netflix to send it off for a month for a, "we aren't sure if it'll fix the problem but we'll see." I sold Halo:Reach for in-store credit at a local game shop and will probably pick up Fallout instead.

Maybe I should have sent it in, but I would honestly rather stick to a game that will likely work without weeks of agony.

Maybe when Reach goes to the bargain bin or something I will consider renting it. Ttyl guys.

After i filed my BBB complaint a new xbox will be arriving tomorrow im going to see if my halo works on it then i have to ship reach out to them and they will send me a new game....so all is working out so far just took a lot time

  • 10.06.2010 10:51 AM PDT

I got a call from Microsoft today and my issue has been resolved. I am getting a console in advance and a new copy of Reach. I strongly advise filing with the BBB, because without them, I would not have gotten these results.

  • 10.06.2010 11:09 AM PDT

Here is an update on my replacement discs. I've had 2 discs sent to me and neither of them work. Seriously Bungie? Seriously Microsoft. I just emailed xbox support, and I hope they give me an acceptable solution.

  • 10.06.2010 11:27 AM PDT

For whatever reason I'm having a problem submitting a claim to the BBB. It won't actually submit it.

Sucks.

Yeah call me buck or luke idc which just dont be a douch to me and were fine. im always looking for new friends to play halo with so feel free to add me ^^

Excuse me but uh i found that when you take the updates off the xbox and play offline it works fine but when connected to xbox live it wont read the disk. It has been doing the same thing to me with dead rising 2. All i know is without the updates from xbox live these games run perfectly but then you cannot play with friend, cannot play multiplayer, and you cant download new maps and dlc without screwing up the game with the updates. Please do respond to this because im going to get a new xbox today and try it with that. Hopefully its just a glitch in the update but im suspicious about my xbox too seeing as i have had it for about 2 years now and never had any problems with it. ThankYou and please do respond :3

Ok uh if you hate bungie so much then why the hell are you posting on their forums? Also if you love CoD go find a forum that talks about that not porblems with reach that need fixing because im tired of little kids like you with no life who go around posting on random forums just to get attention...Really i mean whats the point in you doing this? Do you like getting angry messages from other people?

Yeah i get what your saying the exact thing is happening to my xbox and it only started happening after i got reach but i dont see why that is. I also tried all the online fixes but look take all the game updates off of your xbox then when you put in the disk and it asks you to update say no. It will put you offline but the game should run. I do not know why that is but it has somthing to do with the update because its doing the same thing with dead rising 2 and its really pissing me off.

I got my 360 back today. Reach now works. The DVD Drive appears to be a different model and is pretty much silent.

Granted it was unfortunate to be out a 360 for awhile but I they replaced my out-of-warranty launch console with a refurb and included a 1 year warranty for FREE.

Can't really beat that - this is my 5th xbox replaced under warranty [=

I think the key here is to get the console replaced it's definitely hardware.
