from what i saw off the previous pages it seems like im experiencing the same thing but instead of a green screen or whatever my xbox just freezes. i know its not my xbox overheating cause i fixed that by adding a fan. i intentionally bought reach a month later because i thought that bungie/ms would come have come up with a solution by now, but i guess i was wrong. if installing it on the hdd works (at least for some) then im gonna try that

I'm getting this same problem. I bought the new Reach 360s on launch day, loved it to death for almost a month. Played a lot of Reach (probably 4-6 hours total a day) for this last month and didn't have a problem till just recently. Now my xbox likes to freeze up on me, for no reason whatsoever. I've had it burned to my HDD since day one, and the disc is flawless so I know that's not the problem. I don't get a DRE ever, it boots up fine but when I'm playing live I get issues.

I can normally get to the playlist screen, select a playlist, and get it all loaded up but that's when my problems start. It'll either freeze just as the match is beginning, or about 3-4 minutes into the game. At first I thought it might be because my bandwidth is in the red and says WARNING!, so I tried doing Score Attack which normally works. Well that just froze about 5 minutes ago too, so I know that can't be the issue. When it does freeze, the screen gets all choppy (best way I can describe it), like the disc skipped (which it couldn't have since it's on the HDD).

I was playing Fable II on it earlier for a solid hour without any problems, turned it off and took a nap. Came back to it like 3 hours later, put in Reach and played 1 game of Score Attack before it started to freeze on me. So it seems the Reach is the only game that it freezes for, which makes no sense to me. I just hope I don't have to send in my 360 already, I've had it for a month and a day now. Already called M$ support, and they had me reinstall the dashboard updates and redownload my gamertag yesterday, which seemed to work for the time being. I'm going to try playing again in like 15 minutes and hope it works, and if it doesn't I'll just call the late night crew at M$ and have a nice talk with them. Not too mad, just disappointed I can't keep playing Reach cuz I wanted at least a colonel by the time the cap is lifted

edit - Oh and I know it's not overheating, I use the bottle cap trick to keep it ventilated. It's sitting horizontally on the box it came in, raised on the 4 Dr. Pepper caps; in the middle of my bedroom with nothing around it but the TV. The powercord is all by itself so I know that is ventilated also. Could it be my powersupply itself? I have it on a kinda of crappy strip plug right now, like a really ghetto one. I'm going to go switch it out with my brother's since he only uses his for his phone and clock, and he actually has a really nice one. I'll post back if that seems to help at all.

Edit 2- Well last night I switched the strip plug I was using and that didn't seem to make a difference whatsoever. I Then tried playing Fable II, which froze about 2 minutes into the game meaning this has to be a Hardware failure. About 15 minutes later though I got Fable II to load up and played fine for about an hour which surprised me. I then passed out since it was almost 4am with the xbox still not having frozen. This morning I put in Halo Reach to check the challenges like I do every morning, and I actually was able to play 2 games of Fire Fight without a problem. Seems like the problem just comes and goes without any pattern or logic, and the best part is that today is now the 32nd day I've had the system. Hope Gamestop doesn't hold me to that 30day guarantee...

Heh, a month later- I just bought Reach [10/15/10] to play on my '09 Arcade (w the 60gHDD from my '08 "silver tray") and it thinks that it's a DVD.

It would have been nice to have been told about this apparently common problem BEFORE I shilled out sixty bucks for the worthless disc.

Apparently Bungie is mum on the subject (at least when it comes to prospective buyers of Reach), so far.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If it was a "console problem" then why is Reach the only game I have that won't play on my console? (I just bought GH WOR as well and it plays just fine...)

In my case the game just plays fine until New Alexandria. The cut scene starts at the end of the mission, then when "something" happen, the sound disappears and the cut scene continues to play. Once the cut scene is over I get the error message "Cannot read disk" and I am kicked out the game. Can be reproduced always and only at this point.
The disk is brand new, clean, UK version played on a brand new PAL XBOX 360 250 Go with the game installed on the HDD and the game disk in the tray. All my other games are so far working just fine.
I contacted MS by e-mail (not all Halo players are in North America and players in Europe are also having troubles, see phone number). So far no feedback but I would like to see if other people are having the exact same issue as most of the people here seems even not able to start the game. So that may be related to a similar root cause or maybe something completely different.
Help appreciated.

I was playing Campaign up to the sixth or seventh mission. It went to the loading screen at which point I was awarded an achievement. Then it froze on me. I reset my console (what else can you do) tried loading it from that point but it froze at the loading screen again. Then it tells me that my disc is dirty/unreadable, which is bollocks because that game was only a few hours old at that point. I got a replacement game (no questions asked believe it or not) and loaded it from that point also which that time it worked but I get up to the mission after where Kat gets a needler through the head and it does the SAME thing again. I'm a bit hesitant to take the game back a second time but it seems that I have no choice. MP and Firefight load perfectly fine but not Campaign.

When is the fix coming?

I have an 09 aracade with my 20 gig HD from launch and "The Package" wont load. I managed to get around it by playing Co-op and doing "The Pillar of Autumn" and then went back in single player and beat it and the ending. All the missions work in Single Player except for "The Package" which also doesn't work in Co-op.

I cleared my cache and did some maintenance and it got to 52% loaded before it decided to crap out. I also took it to my friends Xbox and the same thing happened. The disk has no marks on it. I have read the forums and I am also hoping for a patch. Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be great.

Thanks guys.

Dude you can get it refurbished for reeeeeaaallly cheap....

Started getting load failures on matchmaking 6 days ago. Called MS support (I owned the original Xbox 360 with 13G hard drive). MS had me clear the cache, had me check my connection to Xbox Live. Kept getting no results and no answers. Went and bought the Xbox slim with the 250G hard drive. Transferred content from old Xbox to the new Xbox Slim still didnt have any luck. Tried to install game to new hard drive failed at 45% every time. Replaced router replaced modem still no luck. Went to Blockbuster rented Halo Reach no scrathes on disc still didnt work. Went to a different game rental store rented Halo Reach again FINALLY back online with matchmaking no problems.

Comparing the disc I rented to the disc that I own. The disc that doesnt work has what looks like something was spilt between the layers. To notice this tilt the disc in a well lit room or under a lamp and you can see an odd layer between the disc like a cheap dvd. The disc that IS working does not have the odd shaped spot on it and it installed to my hard drive with no problem. No problems since I rented the new disc!!!!!

I may seem to come across as a -blam!-, but I'm really just trying to help.

I found a small solution based off of what I read from another users post a few pages back. I recovered my gt on a USB flash drive and removed my hard drive from my xbox. I loaded up normal situations that would give me a disc error. So far none I played for a bout 3 1/2 hours without any problems.

And from what that users posts read, the problem will be completely obsolete when the new dashboard update comes out in a couple weeks.

Just want to say I still have not received a disc read error since I updated my Dashboard. Before the Preview Program went live I put in a claim with the BBB and I recently got a call from someone at MS. They offered me the free swap of the system and the game (as someone pointed out, they want our systems so they can also try to figure out what's going on because they don't know yet). Then I told him I was part of the preview program and that the problem has seemed to stop ever since I installed the Dashboard Update and recovered my Gamertag. He said he would make a note of it and let the proper people know. He said he may call me to get more information from me and maybe test some things, and the system swap is an open offer, so if it happens to me again I can still swap my system out. So far he has not called me for more info.

But so far so good. I'm playing through campaign on legendary and I just beat "New Alexandria". When I had the issue I couldn't see the cut scene at the end, and now it's fine. I also couldn't join matchmaking and that hasn't been a problem since. Same Xbox, same hard drive, same copy of Reach, and now everything is acting normal. I still have 2 missions to go so I'll report back when I'm done.

If I finish the whole campaign without an error I'll call the contact at MS to make sure he knows. It would be a lot easier if this is somehow a fix, because it's easier to push a dashboard update early to folks compared to shipping out a new console. Unfortunately the new dashboard is not available to everyone until November, so MS would have to approve you early and there's no way for any of you to test this on your system unless you're part of the Preview Program. I guess in the meantime you can give the gametag recovery a shot.

Want to post another follow up since someone on this page referenced my other post.

I've played a lot of Halo Reach now. The only problem I had was on Mission 8, where after a cut scene played the game would send me back to the start of the mission. Other people have experienced this problem too and I'm not sure if it's related in any way to disc read errors. I ended up skipping the cut scene and everything was fine.

Now what I did notice is that after reinstalling the game to the hard drive (I replayed the game on legendary without installing it) the DRE errors returned. It took a couple of days of multiplayer but eventually they showed up. Maps wouldn't load in Matchmaking. I deleted my install and I'm playing off the disc again and I've had only one disc read error.

I'm still not sure if the Dashboard update, gamertag recovery, or the deletion of my game install fixed the problem. I called MS to let them know I can't play off the hard drive and I'm waiting for someone to get back to me. I am providing them with info and they appreciate the feedback (again, I filed a BBB complaint so I'm in direct contact with someone in support). They still don't know what the problem is, and there is no ONE problem. There are many problems ranging from bad discs, "bad" consoles, etc. They still haven't nailed it down yet. As you can see in this thread, one person may replace their disc and it will work fine, and one might replace their disc and it has no effect.

Once support contacts me I'll follow up. But long story short, I would not count on the dashboard update fixing this problem, as eventually the disc read errors returned when I had the game installed. And as I said before (and from what MS has told me) there is no one problem. There are a few.

So yes, I can play Halo Reach now. But something is STILL not right if I can't install this game to the hard drive and play it properly. I know I'm a lot better off than some of you (those who can't play it at all) so I'm somewhat grateful for that. However if I can't play the game off the HD like Bungie encourages people to do, technically speaking the game is still not functioning properly. I'll keep contacting MS until it does.

that happened to me once. it is possible that it could be you're xbox and not your reach game because it happened to me with MW2. you might be able to call microsoft and ask

Software should be free, just like air...

That sounds like somone dropped the ball with the coding and your Xbox is looking at the game like its a DVD full refund and exchange of the same game upon return to the store.

If you have a fan charger, ironically, sometimes that can stop it from working. I'd try googling to see if that's the problem (provided you actually have a charger).

XBL Ambassador, Graphic Designer, Maker of Halo panoramas and full 360 degree views. Halo Panoramas

My xbox360 Elite stopped reading the Halo: REACH disc after an update I received to the new dashboard. It would load the game up, but once it starts the beginning movie sequence, it stutters and freezes near the point where the asteroid smacks into another rock. Then says disc is not readable. I found this to be pretty dumb, since I know the disc is readable. So I put it in my other XBOX360 Elite and it booted up just fine. Slapped my HDD onto the XBOX360 that worked and I have been good to go since.

I blame the update.

We should just make our own -blam!- games and stop outsourcing the "disc-making" jobs to Asian kids over in a sweatshop in Taiwan.

No offense to any Asian people though... Americans are just cheap and lazy.

  • 10.17.2010 10:43 PM PDT

I've had the same problem, on a launch console aswell, however i just open and close the disc tray a few times till it reads it as a game, not a DVD. I've also had the sam eproblem where it starts a cutsene in the middle of a mission and them freezes the whole xbox. I don't know whether this would also be connected but i've had games and medals not registered in my games history or medal chest. So...yeah, tis a bit -blam!-.
