just adding my name to the list of people with bad DVD drives
Used 360 from gamestop (one redring, free fix. 2nd redring out of warrenty --> $100 'refurb' unit)
Symptoms:
after about 1 month of use, unit will not recognize Reach disk on insertion.
Never mistaken for a video dvd, just 'open tray' over and over.
No game play problems whatsoever once the unit recognizes the disk.
Problem is manifesting, although not as severely, with all my other game disks as well now (other Halo, Forza, Mass Effect). These disks never had prior problems
*edit
I suppose the best solution is to find somebody local that has the know-how to swap out drives on 360s.
Microsoft did this to themselves (like with the redring) by using Steve Jobs style proprietary hardware and software lockouts. If it was a modular repairable unit hundreds of thousands of people like me would just pay for upgraded or repair parts as necessary without bothering Bill Gates.
When a company takes power away from the consumer, expect the consumer to show up with pitchforks and torches when it doesn't work.
