Ummm.... yeah...

I read it. Interesting as I have yet to see any mention of Microsoft responding to anything yet. Hopefully they get something on the wire soon that is a bit better than we are aware of the issue.

FOUND THE FIX!

Problem: Reach loads the first cutscene and then proceeds to repeat it over and over, trying to skip the cutscene either results in repeating it again, or in a brief loading screen which then pops up the "Disc Unreadable" error.

Troubleshooting:
-I had the original launch console which was replaced with a 2006 model due to red ring of death. I still have the original hard drive paired with it.
-I have tried 2 different Reach Disks both have the same error.
-I have tried installing it to the hard drive, same error.
-I have tried erasing all Reach related files from the drive and using a temporary profile instead of my own. Same error.
-I have detached the hard drive and played the game using a temporary profile, NO ERROR.

Solution: Contact Microsoft and request your console/HD to be repaired or replaced, it is either something with the hard drive or the console/HD hardware. Since it is a MS game and hardware the best place is to start there. Hope this helps, I have a MS specialist calling me today at 5pm central time and will post the solution when I receive it.

Hey look what i just found on google

http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/09/15/halo-reach-problems -with-disc-and-co-op-on-xbox-360-slim/

The only thing wrong with that is that it says there is problems with the discs but i have tried 3 seperate discs and none work and i even tried 2 of them on a friend's xbox elite and they worked fine
LOL How sad are you that you have to quote yourself just to get attention! OT: This is really terrible news, I haven't got my copy yet but I'm hoping I don't get the same problems...Dunno if I should be hoping for a disc issue or hard ware issue...

  • 09.15.2010 8:14 AM PDT

I tried detachting the hard drive twice but didn't help at all

  • 09.15.2010 8:14 AM PDT

Ugh. I also have this issue on my Halo 3 Edition 360. I originally couldn't play past halfway through the first mission no matter what i tried, but after clearing the cache and rebooting it let me play into the second mission. However once i died it started looping at the opening cinematic again...this is very painful. I just want to play my Reach.

IMO If we want to be heard we should all send emails to:

tips@Kotaku.com

Just send them the link to this thread or if you want add more detail to the problem...BTW I have already done this, the more people that do this the more likely it will become an article and Kotaku will be asking for an answer form Bungie and MS

Hi Guys, been checking this thread all nite!

I have a brand new Xbox360 Arcade Jasper made in 3/2010 bought 2 weeks ago; and I have the DRE everyone is complaining about.

Except that maybe it's not that hard with me, cuz I could install the game in my USB Flash Drive (I still don't have HDD) and now I can run it from the HDD without problems.

But the DRE freaked me out; I had it 3 times. Starting the campaign, after choosing the difficulty, the game threw me a message like "The campaign mode can't be started" . Then I started it again and played normally 'till I paused for like 5 minutes and when I unpaused the game, tada! DRE.

So I went to the dashboard to install it, and when it was about to start it gave a third DRE. I took the disc out, turned off the 360, and turned it on again; put the disc again and installed it to the USB Flash Drive without problems.

Even thoigh I'm not "that" affected, I just hope that Bungie or Microsoft do something about this.

Possitive attitude guys!

To bump something is to post in the thread to push it back to the top of the category list and possibly raise its popularity

  • 09.15.2010 8:36 AM PDT

Ummm.... yeah...

Called Gamestop and the person I spoke with had no clue what I was talking about. They offered to exchange the disc which I guess I'll do just for the hell of it.

Can anyone confirm that only changing the DVD will work??

And shepherds we shall be.
For thee my Lord for thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may quickly carry out Thy command.
We shall flow a river forth to Thee,
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti.

Seems like we aren't the only ones with problems.

Ummm.... yeah...

Depends on what you mean by DVD. Supposedly changing the DVD drive on some of the Slims will fix things. From what I am reading, changing discs (ie returning and getting another) does not work. I am going to return anyway just for the H of it till I hear some solid working solutions that don't involve kitchens and water lol.

"Please understand we cannot help you with game support issues. You will need to contact the support number listed in the back of your Halo manual (1-800-4MY-XBOX) for game related issues"

Part of the auto reply when you email webmaster@bungie.com

Instead of those 4 rapid announcements that nobody cares about why don't they announce that they know there's a problem....

I work at a store that sells HALO Reach we have had 25 discs (so far!) returned because they don't work. We tested them out on different systems and they don't work. Its more than just the system. Its the disc.

  • 09.15.2010 9:02 AM PDT

OK. So... seeing that most people do not read the thread but just bump this - I'll say it again (as I did on pages 12 and 17 of this thread) - you can fix the disc if you want to by boiling it. It worked for more than just me.

If I had to guess - the issue is not nearly as widespread as this thread makes it appear. I am guessing this game sold VERY many copies on day 1. I am not saying this is not a problem it is. But I also suspect that every game has certain % of failure rate in discs. This was the 1st of XBOX games that I had a problem with (and I have about 30 games total) and - I fixed it by letting the DVD float in a pot of boiling water for about 45 seconds, shiny side down. Take it out with something plastic or wooden, let it cool, wipe with soft towel and go play.
