Hi, first time posting. Please be gentle. I am having the same problem with the Disc Is Unreadable error. I have an Xbox 360 Pro from Jan 2007. I bought the 120gig HDD to replace the 20gig. I have never had a single issue with any game ever until Reach.
With that being said, I returned my copy to my local Gamestop, got home and popped the disc in, hoping it would work. Same problem, same exact spot where it cuts out.
I called my Gamestop, and got the manager, and he informed me that the company was made aware of the issue by Microsoft, and they will be issuing a patch in the next 24-48 hours which would fix all the issues including the 4gig Slim one too. I was relieved and thanked him without asking any questions. I don't know how much to trust this, seeing as how nothing has been announced through MS, and no response from my email last night about it. Again this came from a Gamestop Manager, not MS. Hope this was at least somewhat helpful.
Really hoping its legit, id be willing to wait a couple days, but the sooner the better
