question everything...truth has no pedigree

This is unbelievable. I understand many people are able to play just fine. But the amount of people unable to play this game is astounding.

Great job Microsoft and Bungie. Real quality work you guys are doing!

/sarcasm...In reality you suck pretty hard right now.

If it weren't for Halo, my house would not have a 360 in it. Now that Halo isn't working, I don't see much reason to keep playing that broke-ass POS xbox. Guess the ol' Wii is about to get a lot more play.

It was the same for me. I played multiiplayer no problem then I tried the campaign. Now nothing works

  • 09.16.2010 9:10 AM PDT

Tried putting my profile on to a memory stick and take my hard drive off. Worked for the first 2 minutes of campaign and it brought up the almighty Reach error: disc unreadable.

I hope this thing about a patch is right. I want to play campaign!

Yeah. Im goin to email the webmaster of bungie and see if I can get an answer on that. Has anybody done that yet?

Reach is still sitting on my desk, haven't played it yet. I'm almost certain I'm going to run into these problems....great.

Curt Champion,

First, many thanks for taking the time to explain what you learned.

FWIW, if I were having this problem and had the bucks I'd get a new slim. In addition to not having this problem it uses half the power of a launch Xbox 360 (and hence generates half as much heat). You move up to a 250GB drive, you get built-in wireless networking (which may or may not be useful to you), and it's a lot quieter than the original which is nice, especially if you use it as a DVD player (I don't, but some people do). I can't even hear my new console from where I sit. If you use the optical audio out the new consoles have a port for that, and of course the slims have an HDMI port.

If you don't have the bucks, I understand, but I replaced my 20GB Halo 3 console with one of the new Reach consoles and I love it. I actually like the look of the Halo 3 console better, as the silver and chrome on the Reach console doesn't have any connection to anything in the game as far as I can tell, but functionally it's a big improvement in every respect.

Just my $0.02.

i have a first gen console, i purchased reach on launch night, first couple of campaign levels worked fine, then i had a couple of freezes and disk read errors. eventually this stopped for a while, and but then once i reached nightfall, it keeps freezing at pretty much the same point and wont allow me to progress. This entire situation is appauling, this is my third xbox after having had the red ring twice, and now it seems even when the useless machine is just about functioning it cant properly play games. I will never buy another MS console again, thats a fact, but why Bungie whom i normally rate highly havent released a statement to inform everyone as to the situation i dont know.

Failure is ALWAYS an option.

Mine is working... for now at least and it is a repaired replacement console. But this sucks for everyone who is having problems.

Last night i had this horrible dream that i bought this great new game everyone was playing but for no reason at all it wouldn't let me play... Then this guy came up and spoiled the ending and killed me cuz he's already level 50 ... What a weird, horrible, frustrating, scary dream that was.....

  • 09.16.2010 10:34 AM PDT

Just saw this post:

"I just wanted to share my experience on the phone with Microsoft support which brought into light some very pertinent and interesting information.

So I just got off the phone. I spoke with a nice guy at the support line who gave me the official response of, "you're going to have to send in your xbox. I can take care of the order if it's within warranty or I will forward you to the engineers who will process the order if out of warranty, both free of charge.: I told him I was not interested in sending away my box for potentially 4 weeks as it plays all other games just fine and would like more clarification on what would actually be done to the box if I actually would send it in. He forwarded me to the engineers.

I then spoke to an engineer named Chuck. After a lengthy conversation of him explaining that my console was not 'supported' by Halo Reach [if I'm not mistaken, the Halo: Reach box says its a game for Xbox 360...] I quickly delved into more questions. I asked what exactly was not supported. He said the box needed to come in to be 'updated.' Aha, now we're getting somewhere. So first, I asked, "So after sending in the box and you guys 'update' it, the boxes are confirmed to be playing Halo: Reach without any issues?" He told me to hold to confirm that he wasn't giving me any incorrect information. He then came back and said, "Yes it seems to have resolved issues in the boxes that have come back." OK, baby steps, I said to myself. I then asked what they would literally physically be doing to the box upon receiving it to fix this issue; would they be soldering on a new component? Would they be replacing a board or an electronic? He replied, "No, we would be issuing an update which would allow compatibility." !! I said, "So am I to understand, then, that this update is a firmware or software update and not any hardware alteration?" To which he replied, "Correct, it is a firmware update, I believe." A FIRMWARE UPDATE.... SOO, I asked, "So if it is a piece of firmware/software and NOT HARDWARE, it is entirely possible for this update to become publicly available in the days/weeks to come?" He said he could not comment on a if it was or a time-frame.

So in short, after understanding that there is nothing they are physically doing to the hardware upon receiving the xbox's to fix the Halo: Reach issues I have decided (and told him) to wait to see if the update becomes publicly available over xbox live.

Examining everything that has happened, I now believe I understand the current state of affairs and can make an educated guess as to what will happen; Upon receiving alarming amounts of reports of issues with Halo: Reach, Microsoft quickly decided to allow people to send in their boxes, whether in warranty or not, while they figure out the best way to fix the issue on a larger public scale. THEY NEEDED a response for those people who are demanding a fix immediately before they have tested and can issue the update for everyone. Halo (and Bungie) is not only a money making machine but also Xbox's flagship intellectual property and I cannot believe they won't be putting this fix on xbox live in the days/weeks to come. As to why it is not there already but simultaneously being successfully utilized by engineers internally on boxes sent in, I cannot speculate."

I hope it's true and they get some sort of firmware update out to us via XBL. COME ON MICROSOFT!!!

Spawned

How does saying your XBox is white with a gray tray make you think you have an original launch version. The one I am using now, my second, was bought years after launch from Best Buy, is white, with a gray tray. It's not a launch version and it works with Reach fine, 20 GB HD.

It's going to end up being a problem with your console and MS is probably gonna say tough luck, buy a new one, it's out of warranty.

  • 09.16.2010 11:36 AM PDT

thanks for info smashbro! I wont be sending my Xbox in either, yet!

  • 09.16.2010 11:45 AM PDT

Then it sounds like it IS software and not anything physical about the console itself, meaning there is no reason to send it in yet

  • 09.16.2010 12:01 PM PDT

I wish they would atleast say something now. They basicly completly shut down to us and are not telling us anything. JUST tell us we won't be mad!

Master Chief vs Mortal Kombat: The Search for the Hidden Skull. New series, check it out at my homepage link!

My case seems to not be as bad as others because I can play but I get freezing issues. The freezes always occur in the same spots when playing and fortunately, I was able to bypass all of them in strange in-game ways. Continue reading if you're only having freezing issues in-game, if you can't play at all, this unfortunately wont help.

I first realize the problem when trying to run up a hill and fight some hunters. Every time the hunters noticed me as I am coming up the hill, right before any of them fire, freeze. Every time. I'll try not to spoil anything but the objective wasnt necessarily to kill the hunters, it was to destroy something they were protecting. I drove around back, put my warthog next to the shortest part of a cliff, jumped on it from the warthog and was able to get to the location and destroy the target without the hunters even being aware of me. I was ecstatic because now I could continue playing.

After I beat the mission, I loaded it again at Rally Point B which starts you in front of the destroyed objective. I ran up the hill where it was previously freezing, no issues.

When I continued playing, I realized I'd be screwed if it froze in a corridor. And guess what, few missions go by, and it does. There was no other way to get through. It froze about 10x with me trying to figure out how to get through. I was about to try and go through again, but went online to forums to rant (ha) but I didn't pause the game so I went idle. Then I notice it was freezing exactly where a objective marker ends. The one that comes up when you're idle and the game thinks you're lost, and it says you are # distance away from where you need to go. As you get closer it ticks down 100m, 50m, 20m etc.. its around the 0m area when it disappeared and the game froze. So what do I do? I turned around, and walked through it, backwards. It worked. I can't explain why, but it worked.

First time I did this, I died right after I passed the "freeze zone." But then it froze on my dead body. So I restarted, walked backwards, it froze. Restarted, walked backwards, it worked. I got through. Crazy, I know.

Now of course this will only help those that can actually play. But I'm not sure if the "freeze zones" occurs in the same areas for all of us so these locations specifically were:

Mission: Tip of the Spear (After Rally Point Alpha)
The hill leading up the the second Anti Aircraft gun

Mission: Exodus (near beginning)
When you enter the dark building with suicide grunts and its in the corridor with three grunts shortly after seeing the two Armor Lockups.

I was playing on normal difficulty, original launch Xbox 360, and its installed to HDD. Hopes this can help anyone that is having freezing issues similar to mine.

  • 09.16.2010 12:25 PM PDT

I am having pretty much the same problem as danbo. every time I try to complete the LAST MISSION, it freezes, but sound loops and if I open the tray, it will dashboard m, instead of having to turn off my xbox. I had several disc read errors along the way, but I got past them, and this one is consistently causing problems. right after I jump across the bridge and start the fight with the grunts, brutes, jackals and wraith, it can freeze anywhere in that area. If it matters, I often get disc read errors when trying to load up boneyard or sword base, but not consistently. I got the legendary edition, so I really hope this gets fixed soon. My xbox is an original white one from like 2007 and it has a silver disc tray and a black 250 GB hdd that I bought after the fact. Reach is installed to it if it matters.
