I've experienced the same things everyone else has already expressed many times over. I have a launch Xbox with a 20 GB HDD that has never needed to be repaired, and has never given me problems till Halo Reach. I went out and purchased the "Special Edition" of Reach when it was released. I ended up returning it the next day because of the problems I had, but I could only exchange it for a standard game which was fine with me. With the new disc I was able to open up the saved game I had saved w/ the previous disc that didn't work, but it locked up when I tried to save after I had progressed a bit. I went to my system HDD and erased the game data that was saved from the previous disc and loaded it all over again and so far no more problems with campaign mode ( I haven't tried co-op or multiplayer yet).
I suspect that the Special Edition versions of Reach were put on some multilayer DVDs that the disc drive in some consoles are not compatible with which caused incomplete game loads onto the system and problems with the drive reading the disc during game play. With my system I've also noticed that it will act strange when I restart it and try another title after it had a hard failure with Reach. Usually I'll unplug it for a little and then plug it back in and turn it "on". It then seems to act normally after that.
Something that I noticed about the Special Edition and the regular game was the difference in color of the data side of the disc. The SE disc was a gold or brass color while the regular edition was silver. My old system had problems with the SE, but no problems with the regular edition...so far, that is. My advice to all those having problems would be to check the game disc and see if it's a gold-looking color. If it is then see if you can exchange it for one that has a silver color to the data side. Please make sure you delete the old game data from your system before you insert the new disc and try to play again. This has worked great for me, & I'm hoping it'll work for many of you as well.
Seems to me that's it's not necessarily a disc problem as it is a disc compatibility issue because my old system works great now that I exchanged my Special Edition disc for a regular edition.
Cheers & good luck!
