hey guys, my xbox is at the service center right now and it is in the "being repaired" status so hopefully i'll have it back during the week next week, either tuesday or wednesday, then i'll be able to comment on whether my console will then play Halo Reach... boy it better otherwise i'm demanding that they send me out a brand new 360 slim console... plus 12 months of live.... ok maybe not the live but definately the console and if they don't i'll just mention Ombudsman, ACCC and LEGAL ACTION...... and see what they say to that.

So for those who are going to wait... just wait till i come back with my findings and i'll let you know whether you really should send it in... but those who are on the fence about it, i say just send it in... at least you're gonna have newer parts in your Xbox which means it should be better than it was...

Yeah, don't want to rub it in but I have the first Xbox pro 20gig and I have no problem playin the game.

Seems like its software related to me

I believe there was mention that its a specialized firmware upgrade/update or something so just better software. The sent in consoles might serve as a "beta test" of sorts for said update and will soon be released over Live.

  • 09.17.2010 2:27 AM PDT

I've been saying this a lot... for some people it seems software related, others it's hardware related but i kinda reckon that it's a bit of both..

Bungie are such a bunch of lazy bastards who need to try and help us out... i mean at least if it isn't their fault entirely, at least let us know that they care and feel our pain... You know what else is Bullcrap... That this weekend is a free gold weekend so anyone who is on silver gets automatic gold for halo reach... So where is the compensation for the people who have to miss out on that time....

-blam!- OFF BUNGIE AND -blam!-K OFF MICROSOFT... YOU CAN ALL GO AND SUCK ON MY -blam!- AND SWALLOW MY LOVE EXPLOSION YOU DIRTY -blam!-S!!!!

erm.. sorry bout that, had to vent my frustrations

This is my BOOM stick!

It is frustrating as hell mate, can't believe there's no official response ie we now and it will be fixed with an update....... or we all have to send in the box and be massively inconvenienced, its driving me crazy!

  • 09.17.2010 3:23 AM PDT

I think Crackdown 2 or something had a problem not to dissimilar to this problem and the fix was a prompt for an update away.

Well, we're being told now that customer support thinks a patch will not only be released, but it will be released within 48 hours. I've not gotten this information from support myself, mind, so I'm not sure of its accuracy, but it seems rather promising!
I'm more worried now about those players who could play but had their Xbox broken, seemingly because of Reach. But time will tell.

Corvette loaded for me on Firefight Weds and now it's not working nor is the last mission. My error says the disc error and my disc is totally brand new nothing wrong with it. Plz help to resolve this issue. Thx.

Subject: Disc Not Reading? Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for support (see page 35).

It seems there are differing degrees to this problem - I have an early Xbox 360, and have had problems recently with some newer games.

ODST - Although I can play Firefight to my heart's content, and have played through the whole campaign on Heroic when I first bought it, I'm now trying to complete the campaign on Legendary and getting a disc read error as the final mission loads every single time. (The disc is in pristine condition)

Red Dead Redemption - I'm now about 75% of the way through the story, and after every mission autosaves, the console freezes and I have to reset - can't even return to the dashboard. (Again the disc is in perfect condition).

My Halo:Reach should be in my postbox when I get home tonight. If it doesn't work I will kill it. I hope the stories of a patch are true...

We should be thanking them since their consoles are being used to test it. Now we can only hope and wait....and hope

Yeah I got the Old Xbox as well. Got the game on Launch and it played for two days straight. Awesome Right? well then i got the Cannot Start Game Error. Disk looks to be in great condition no scratches nothing. I can now start the game 1/3 of the time. Once it does start up it seems to be working but i fear for the worst. damn!

  • 09.17.2010 4:52 AM PDT

I'm not exactly having a disc read problem but it's probably something along those lines. I finished the 9th campaign mission on Heroic in online co-op and I get the message for the achievement "This is not your grave 10G". But alongside it I get an in game message that says, "Failed to write Gamer Profile settings. One possible reason is if you removed your Xbox 360 Memory Unit. Changers to your profile setting might not be saved." Then when I dashboard it shows my gamerscore as 0, no profile info, and my avatar is just a black shadow. Once I restart my 360 its fine. This however isn't. Also now on the Reach menu my only choice for campaign mission is Noble Actual and it doesn't show that I've beaten the campaign missions in co-op on Heroic. :/

I also just got the same message while in a firefight game.

I have a new 250gb Slim.

Hey all,

I got my copy from EB games in Rundle Mall, Adelaide, SA, Australia, at launch.

I had the error where I put the game in and it either says play DVD, or asks me to clean it - although it just came straight from the case brand new.

As I flipped it over to inspect it under good light, i noticed an indent in my disc about as wide as a 5c piece (AU$). I took the game back and swapped it for another one and I was all good from there.

My console is an Australian launch elite with a BenQ Drive.

The store I returned it to said it must have been a one off case of bad luck. After reading this thread, I think there are manufacturing issues or something like that. Too many cases to be a freak thing.

Got legendary and the reach console. When playing campaign my sound cuts out randomly and sometimes just certain parts, ie just music or vehicle or dialouge. Last night on mission seven i got the disc is unreadable please clean error. What is going on ive missed 60% of the campaign dialouge, and its choppy and freezes. What is being done about this?

< Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. The internet is a privilege not a right >

Glad to see/hear that Microsoft is going to be releasing a patch to fix the problem. Keep in mind this is likely only a POTENTIAL fix. I'm hoping it solves my problems none the less.

Does anyone know if this patch will be a world wide Xbox Live download, or do you need to inform Microsoft that you require it?

P.S. for those of you that were following my posts. I returned the game for a new one and continue to have the issues. Multiplayer works, so at least I can play that while I wait and hope for a timely and effective fix.

Although problems like this shouldn't occur in the first place, I am happy that such Microsoft is being prompt with their response and taking the problem seriously.

Its everyone's friendly neighborhood fatass! Come and join SIP for help getting 1750 in Halo 3, Help with firefight in ODST and a great community!

I haven't had the big problems everyone is talking about but I had issues with the audio cutting out several times on the last mission. I've only done the mission twice but it seemed to do it near the same checkpoints both times.

I demand things to be awesome and not steal ideas from MW 2.

After seeing all of these posts, and having had this same problem last year, and can safely tell you guys that this is a problem with the console. I had a few disc errors that were easily bypassed for a little bit, but I got MW 2 and my 360 refused to play it properly. The mission briefings wouldn't load, dialogue in mission briefings looped, and even open tray. Got a refurbished 360 (six months old) and it's working like a breeze. There was even a topic about people having disc errors with MW 2 that was VERY similar to this topic. It really may have to do with the age of the 360 and how often it's used. The stories of the patch are probably true since there's an article saying MS is working on a fix. The patch rumors started on the 15th at 3:00 eastern time, and the story was it would be in 24-48 hrs. It should go online today then. So pretty much, it looks like 2005-2006 360s will probably have this problem, and the chances are lower (but still possible) with the other consoles. Something to remember, this topic has 1000+ replies, and the preorder numbers for Reach were over 1,000,000, so these problems look like they're smaller than we might think.

P.S. I'm glad to see that not a ton of people with pro 60gb 360s have been on here since that's the version of the 360 I have :D

I'm fine with a few audio problems. I've NEVER had a disc error on this 360 because every game I play with frequency is on my harddrive, so the disc laser isn't used as much as the other people on here.

FOUND THE FIX!

Problem: Reach loads the first cutscene and then proceeds to repeat it over and over, trying to skip the cutscene either results in repeating it again, or in a brief loading screen which then pops up the "Disc Unreadable" error.

Troubleshooting:
-I had the original launch console which was replaced with a 2006 model due to red ring of death. I still have the original hard drive paired with it.
-I have tried 2 different Reach Disks both have the same error.
-I have tried installing it to the hard drive, same error.
-I have tried erasing all Reach related files from the drive and using a temporary profile instead of my own. Same error.
-I have detached the hard drive and played the game using a temporary profile, NO ERROR.

Solution: Contact Microsoft and request your console/HD to be repaired or replaced, it is either something with the hard drive or the console/HD hardware. Since it is a MS game and hardware the best place is to start there. Hope this helps, I have a MS specialist calling me today at 5pm central time and will post the solution when I receive it.

UPDATE: Microsoft contacted me requesting that I borrow someone elses HD and test the game with that. Results: Attaching a different 20GB drive fixed the error and I was able to proceed playing the game past the opening cutscene. My drive was made in Singapore and the one I borrowed was made in Korea. The last three digits of the part number on mine is 002, and the one I borrowed was 003. Now I'm waiting for microsoft to call me back to take troubleshooting to the next level.
