I had the same problem as the OP. I have an Xbox 360 Arcade that I bought at the beginning of this year in January. So it's the Jasper model, I even checked to confirm it before purchasing it. I got Halo Reach at Gamestop on Tuesday. Went home and put it in and kept getting "Open Tray" or "Play DVD". When ever I'd choose "Play DVD", I would get a white screen with XBOX 360 on it.
I've been following this thread since Tuesday. Many say it's the disc or the console. I don't know which one it is. I thought it was my console. I tried it on my friend's Pro and Elite. It did the same thing on both of those, saying "Open Tray" or "Play DVD". On all three consoles(my Arcade and his Pro and Elite) I tried clearing the cache and starting the game without the HDD. I have a 20gb and he has a 120gb on both consoles. My friend had his Elite since 2007 and sent it to MS last year in August to fix it for RROD. So I was expecting it to work on his. Unfortunately, it didn't. I figured maybe it was my disc after all. So I was gonna exchange the game for a new one when he gives me the game back today.
Yesterday I decided to go play Halo CE that I downloaded from the marketplace. I go to my game library and start it up. Before being able to play, I'm told that I need to update the game first. I click yes and let it do it's thing. Then I carry on playing some good ol Halo CE.
But what is weird is ever since I downloaded that update, my Xbox has been able to read my Reach disc. To make sure it was just not luck and only read the disc that one time, I decided to eject the game and put it back in. But before doing that I downloaded the game to my HDD. I've taken the game out and put it back in atleast 6 times. Each and every time, the Xbox read the disc and loaded the game without any problems. So far I've only played ten minutes worth of the first campaign level on solo and co-op with my cousin. There was no freezing, looping of cutscenes, or a Disk Read Error. I also played a couple of firefight matches, all which had no problems at all and ran smoothly.
Has anyone else downloaded some kind of update and been able to play Reach since then? Or did I just get super lucky? Since I haven't played that long, I can't justify if that update I downloaded truly fixed my game. So I will come back later and update you guys when I've at least finished the campaign and played some MM. I don't really play games for long periods of time, so it might be awhile before I finished the campaign.
Tried it, I put Halo CE in and got an update then downloaded it. Halo Reach still won't run campaign for me
