It turns out, no. No luck at all. I am getting a free repair without any haggling but I'm going to wait a bit to send it out.. Just in case the rumors of a patch are true.

I havent phoned xbox yet. Im waiting for the same rumours...

Who started the rumors? I wish bungie would confirm something. How hard is it to make a statement? I bought the game so I could play the single player. I want to play it now! :P

The Society of Blood Red.

May I ask how come this was never found before the game was released? I mean come on it had to have happened at least once in all the time it had to be tested. But I guess I'll play some other game until it works -.-

Whats REALLY surprising me is that I've downloaded the game to my hard drive and I still have this problem.

My first copy didn't work, so I downloaded my second copy right when I opened it, hoping that would take care of the problem. But nope, still can't read the game. :/

I had the same problem as the OP. I have an Xbox 360 Arcade that I bought at the beginning of this year in January. So it's the Jasper model, I even checked to confirm it before purchasing it. I got Halo Reach at Gamestop on Tuesday. Went home and put it in and kept getting "Open Tray" or "Play DVD". When ever I'd choose "Play DVD", I would get a white screen with XBOX 360 on it.

I've been following this thread since Tuesday. Many say it's the disc or the console. I don't know which one it is. I thought it was my console. I tried it on my friend's Pro and Elite. It did the same thing on both of those, saying "Open Tray" or "Play DVD". On all three consoles(my Arcade and his Pro and Elite) I tried clearing the cache and starting the game without the HDD. I have a 20gb and he has a 120gb on both consoles. My friend had his Elite since 2007 and sent it to MS last year in August to fix it for RROD. So I was expecting it to work on his. Unfortunately, it didn't. I figured maybe it was my disc after all. So I was gonna exchange the game for a new one when he gives me the game back today.

Yesterday I decided to go play Halo CE that I downloaded from the marketplace. I go to my game library and start it up. Before being able to play, I'm told that I need to update the game first. I click yes and let it do it's thing. Then I carry on playing some good ol Halo CE.

But what is weird is ever since I downloaded that update, my Xbox has been able to read my Reach disc. To make sure it was just not luck and only read the disc that one time, I decided to eject the game and put it back in. But before doing that I downloaded the game to my HDD. I've taken the game out and put it back in atleast 6 times. Each and every time, the Xbox read the disc and loaded the game without any problems. So far I've only played ten minutes worth of the first campaign level on solo and co-op with my cousin. There was no freezing, looping of cutscenes, or a Disk Read Error. I also played a couple of firefight matches, all which had no problems at all and ran smoothly.

Has anyone else downloaded some kind of update and been able to play Reach since then? Or did I just get super lucky? Since I haven't played that long, I can't justify if that update I downloaded truly fixed my game. So I will come back later and update you guys when I've at least finished the campaign and played some MM. I don't really play games for long periods of time, so it might be awhile before I finished the campaign.

I believe it was posted on some Xbox forum, it would be in the "Halo Games" section, the Reach section, or the Technical Issues section. Though it was not from anybody official, they claimed to have information from a customer support representative.

I cleared my cache like 5 times and it still won't load the last mission.

Progress?!

Hardly. That's the same cookie-cutter acknowledgment we've had for a couple of days, and still they are collecting our consoles.

Oh, definitally. But I would still reccomend everybody hold on to their consoles and continue to call about it for a few more days. The sooner we can all play Reach the better!

You've got a big thumbs up from me on that one..
:\

  • 09.17.2010 3:28 PM PDT

My HDD says Made in Korea and the last 3 digits are 016... should I be concerned? I don't know the normal serial numbers for hard drives... it's 250GB by the way

  • 09.17.2010 3:48 PM PDT

Well another day gone and not even a word. This is bull-blam!-.

  • 09.17.2010 3:59 PM PDT

This is getting rediculous! I am livid at this point. No one should be sending in consoles over this, they are not broken. Microsoft needs to send out an update or recall the games that are suffering from the problem. End of story. I am so tired of not knowing if I wasted money on this POS.

Which makes me think...all the testing that Bungie and others did...they either downloaded the game or used some other disc.
don't you think?

I'm sure the testing was not done on the RETAIL discs...which makes me think that the manufacturing plant burned/imprinted on faulty plastic discs....Some xboxs can read the disc, some can't. Either way the artwork on the disc isn't pretty, so I'm blaming it on the disc manufacturer as well.

=[
I played Reach for the first time at a friends place using her older 360 and yesterday using my Halo:Reach console. Tried to play today on the Reach console with no luck... the disc won't start up and Xbox gives me the option of opening the tray or playing a dvd. I put the disc in my Elite with no luck.

I am thinking that the disc is faulty, every other game and dvd I have played work just fine in both my Reach and Elite console, just not Reach. SAD FACE.

I have yet to contact support and am hoping for a fix delivered via Xbox.
