So basically the two of them (Microsoft and Bungie) barely have an idea what the hell is going on? Well why do I have to send in my xbox for a firmware update? The hell sense does that make, if you don't know what the hell is the problem then admit it because Microsoft=bull-blam!- a good half of the time.

Bungie I'm not mad with you, I'm mad at the fact that as the years go up every product just gets shinier and made with crappy materials

its a firmware problem but they will not realease any patch in the first week coz it would be bad for sales to admit a problem with the game... at least thats what i think :/

Well then I'll keep waiting

Okay, So My friend and I have just talked it over and come up with a temporary solution. IDK if this has been suggested yet.

1) Remove your hard drive

2) Install a flash drive. If it isn't configured to your xbox, go to system, then to memory and the flash drive should be there. Select it and configure it.

3) Move the profile(s) you want for your reach achievements to the flash drive.

4) Once you boot up your system again, you'll have to update it because the only memory you have is the flash drive. Accept the mandatory xbox update.

5) When you put in reach after the update you should be able to play it.

I'm doing good so far and I'm not experiencing any loading errors, so it's likely something to do with the hard drives themselves. This way you'll still be able to earn achievements and play matchmaking and firefight. I used an 8 GB flash drive but I'm not sure whether or not you can work with something smaller.

Hope this does you guys some good. I've bought and traded in 4 different copies up to now, and I know to most of you it's getting tiring. Good Luck.

Chain Gang LT
TCurry

EDIT: You can only play it so many times before experiencing errors. Sigh. I'd hoped I had this figured out. Well, all up to bungie now :/

Question--does the solution above only pertain to those who can play without the HDD?
EDIT: This is allowing me to update but we'll see if it works for me. The HDD removal had no effect in my case so I don't know if that's what the above poster was talking about or not, but I'll keep you guys informed.

SUCCESS I cleared my cache and it works :D

Tried that last night...didn't work for me.

Same here, it didn't work for me either. I have a 2007 Pro 20 GB HDD, reacntly purchased ALL brand new cables, A 2009 Model 60 Gig HD, and I cleaned it VERY WELL. It only RROD one time but my dad, brother, and i fixed it Easily ourselves, but the dvd drive/Disc Tray had problems since we got it, but it got worse over the years.

But it still works none the less.
It takes it three or four trys (Sometimes more) to read a CD/Disc (I have to keep opening and closing the tray till it reads it).
But only Halo Reach ( I got Legendary Editon and it was made in... Puerto Rico!) seems to have the most trouble. And i did some research and as it turns out theres ALOT more people than i expected that have the same problem so hopefully this problem can get fixed soon.

I tryed EVERYTHING... Ex:

-Cleared the Cache MANY times.
-Reset my Modem.
-Opened and closed my NAT a few times.
-Installed to Hard Drive.
-Cleaned and polished Disc.
-Cleaned Xbox 360, and play area, and Disc Drive.
-Buying New power Brick and cable, and Ethernet cable, and picture/sound cable.
-Turned Xbox Horizontally and vertically (Even God forbid Upside Down!!!).
-Played offline and online.
-Used diffrent Game tags.
-Used diffrent disc and consle.
And Many others....

NONE OF THESE WORKED. ITS NOT YOUR CONSLE PEOPLE ITS THE GAME!!!!!

I walked away, disappointed as usual.

Woooooooooow. So if there is ANY possibility of a patch, it won't be released in the first week because a billion dollar company wants to get as much money as possible?

That's sickening...

Add me to this pathetic list. Just bought the game tonight and I can only get to the end of the first cutscene before DDE. I tried installing to the drive and I get the same problem. This is lame.

I've been searching through this thread but can't find anybody with the same problem at a quick glance. My copy of Reach worked perfectly until today. I too get a disc unreadable error message but it's always preceded by partial loss of audio.

The problem first occurred in Matchmaking. The game would start normally but then all of a sudden I lose one or more of the audio layers (watch the documentary with Marty explaining the audio stuff). For example I can hear grenades whistling past me but the explosion I hear is similar to what you would hear after a nearby explosion.

Everything else works just fine until the end of the game: I get the score board and then after about 10 seconds the error message. This also happened in Campaign but I can't tell exactly at which point (only tried once).

My Xbox is a 2-day old 250 Gb "Slim" and I have Reach installed on the HD

mine does exactly the same if you find a fix please inbox me

Nothing works I have tried it all. When the 360s came out X box said in their own words that this system should last for 15 years. Now they want everyone to trade up or buy new? what about those of us who can not afford it?

Free "repair"! It only takes three weeks!

Yea, I'm feeling quite screwed also.. :\

  • 09.17.2010 10:03 PM PDT

So dumb I can play about two games them it freezes.

And its been so hard trying to stay away from campaign spoilers as all my frieds have beat it and I can't even get through the first mission without errors.

Only thing that doesn't freeze up on me is forge and I can care less about that now.

  • 09.17.2010 10:15 PM PDT

I am VERY VERY tempted to trade in my xbox for a new one. I simply can not wait any longer. I paid $90 for this game and I'm tired of waiting...

  • 09.17.2010 10:36 PM PDT

Same here. Shame on bungie for releasing a game with this error, and not taking immediate action when it was discovered, and shame on microsoft for having a fix and refusing to distribute it unless you send your xbox in. I payed 80 dollars for this game, and 200 dollars for an xbox to play it, and I should be able to do so.

  • 09.18.2010 12:13 AM PDT

Hey lady, we're ready for your DVDA shot!!

So I just wanted to say I got a Xbox 360 slim and now my copy of Reach works just fine. No problems, no DREs, no failure to loads. Finally I get to join the masses!

  • 09.18.2010 12:16 AM PDT

I have this same problem. I would have thought that from a business point of view it would be more cost effective for Microsoft to release an update for the game. Even if it really is "A small amount of customers" those customers still have to send their console away for a free repair, which is free for the consumer but MS are still paying some tech somewhere to do this firmware update on every console sent. So would it not be cheaper to just get the guys at Bungie to make a patch, upload it and problem solved in one hit.
Not to mention that given the game does not work on my console, regardless of the type, and the game states it is for the Xbox 360 console - no console model difined - that means its a breach of the Sales of good act (NZ) and therefore I could sue them....maybe I should.

  • 09.18.2010 12:25 AM PDT

Im so lucky i have a launch xbox 360 and reach works fine.I think it because it had RROD so i send it to get repair and microsoft change the inside to an elite but looks like a launch xbox 360 in the outside but an elite in the inside.

  • 09.18.2010 12:47 AM PDT

Ihad same problem with my xbox wich is 06year old xbox 07 or older xboxes dont read new games wich has come out this year but i have 14xboxes :D and all of those xboxes are 08 year :D

But try with other xbox first

  • 09.18.2010 12:57 AM PDT

Same here I can't even play the first level of campaign. It was fine at first but now everytime i try to play it my box freezes but i can play online all i want. I was going to do the solo legendary run but i can't cause my box freezes when playing campaign. They need to hurry up and get this fixed paid to much money for it to freezes my box.

I'm amazed this hasn't shown up anywhere other than a throwaway article on Kotaku. I can't believe N4G hasn't shut down over teh flame war this would start. They flip out over the most unsubstantiated garbage, but nothing on this???

If Bungie and MS won't do anything, maybe we should take this problem outside the thread, spam N4G, destructoid, whatever with submissions for this problem. If this becomes more known they have to at least say something.

Gamespot had two seperate articles on both the disc reading errors and the co-op player issue.

Subject: Disc Not Reading

i can confirm that signing into your live account solves the single player issue as i am now able to get past the opening cut scene, it finally loads yeah!! no good for co-op i know but its looking more and more like a software or hdd issue, not the discs themselves.

hope for a fix soon
