Yes. This worked for me for a bit. I was also able to get further by moving the camera slower and in a defined set of paths. I can almost guarantee you will experience the problem again later in your missions. Please report back if you do!

Constantly clearing system cache seems to have had limited success for me. Just managed to finish campaign without any DRE's. seems I can replay completed missions no probs so it's just some multi player issues (Big Team Battles and co-op).

BTW campaign ending was meh. Lame considering the trouble I went through to be able to play it! Huge space battle ending would have been way cooler.

  • 09.19.2010 10:11 PM PDT

I have a 2008 Pro, 20gig, and I've been able to play almost fine, except "Tip of the Spear" has had the replaying cutscene issue, as well as "Exodus". I have 4 missions left on solo legendary, and I'm burnt out playing them more than once, only to have an hour of time wasted because the game freezes. Tried installing, and all I get is a green screen and a DRE.

Edit: Now it loads to the main screen, but it can't find any maps for any gametype on my HDD.

To contact both Microsoft and third party reporting organizations...

Start with the MVP's. Let them know that the Halo community is unhappy with Microsoft and Bungie's lack of transparency regarding this problem.

Then, contact Channel 9 (Give them a chance, this is Microsoft, and if you don't watch this, you should. Microsoft does do some things very well).

Halo is the XBOX 360 flagship game product and the fact that they aren't taking the problem seriously or being transparent about the problem is unacceptable. If you are a fan then please help put them on the spot and show them that they will lose credibility by not doing due dilligence and by not responding to the community honestly and openly.

I also feel the community would agree that Bungie and Microsoft should Cease and Desist any advertising or promotion of Halo Reach both on television as well as XBOX Live until this issue is solved.

Some consoles do play it without issue. I was able to take the game to other retail consoles which are not launch consoles and which do not contain the physical hardware parts in question and was able to play fine. The issue seems to involve certain consoles (of Elite, Launch, [reportedly Halo Reach Limited Edition] and possibiliy other models) which contain certain hardware. As a developer and tester I believe the issue is with the motherboard or GPU drivers or hardware and is limited in scope to XBOX 360 consoles that were released with a specific set of internals. Only Microsoft knows what hardware and drivers have gone into each individual console and I can promise that different consoles of the same model may contain different internal hardware depending on where and when they were manufactured. This does not excuse the response.

I will restate the problem again. Microsoft and Bungie have released a game with the XBOX 360 brand name that does not play on all XBOX 360 consoles. They are currently demanding that those of us with consoles they sold us that they now deem "defective" pay to send our consoles in to be fixed. They are doing this despite the fact that we purchased those consoles in good faith based on their advertising of the XBOX 360 brand name and despite the fact that our consoles continue to play other games and function otherwise without issue. This is an unacceptable response to the customers who are experiencing this known issue. This is also an unacceptable response to the customers who are not experiencing this known issue on their own consoles but who may take the game to a different console which does.

If the response from Microsoft and Bungie is "pay us for fixing our mistake" then I, frankly, will take my money elsewhere. Not just with XBOX 360, but with all Microsoft products. This response tarnishes the entire Microsoft brand and I really hope Robbie Bach catches some Hell over it.

I bought a Reach special edition console and the first time I put the game in the console it would identify it as a dvd. So I disabled the auto-run feature and reinserted the game in the drive again and it worked. Occasionally the xbox still identifies the game as a dvd and wont play it, but I just re-insert the disk and it always fixes the issue. Its odd because it only happens with the Reach disk.

I really hate cruel irony. I bought the Halo Reach limited edition Xbox as well as the Legendary Edition of the game. The new xbox only freezes and gets the disc read error when playing Halo Reach. Currently filling out the form for Microsoft's disc replacement program because that's what a representative told me to do over the phone. If this doesn't work then not sure what I am going to do.

  • 09.19.2010 11:44 PM PDT

See, I totally understand having problems like this with software. I have debugged enough problems that I have caused to totally have sympathy for these people. Don't get me wrong though, the fact that this game made it into the wild means that they did either piss-poor testing or piss-poor manufacturing, or both.

What really -blams-me-off are that MS and Bungie aren't being open and honest with the community. I'm a fan of this game. I'm also a developer and I'm not stupid enough to pay them to send in my console when I can pretty much prove that the problem is with their software. The icing on my cake was that their higher-tier support staff weren't even interested in resolving a known issue without charging me to send in a console that I bought in good-faith and which experiences no other issues that I can find. I've put the console back through it's paces, so to speak, and I can't get it to error again except for a reproducable issue with Halo Reach.

Update... Played a full set in DJ Hero with no issue FTW (yeah, I don't want to hear how lame that is)! How many games is that now without issue except for Reach? Oh, and something is wrong with my hardware?

Games which I have now tested this weekend which I have no issues with (up to 20):
EA Madden 07
EA NHL 07
DJ Hero
Rock Band 2
Rock Band 3
Rock Band Beatles
Dante's Inferno
Dead Rising
Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Halo 3
Fight Night Round 3
Fight Night Round 4
Scene It!
Viva Pinata
Viva Pinata: Touble in Paradise
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 4
Ghostbusters: The Video Game

DJ Hero and Dante's Inferno were tested successfully while signed into XBOX LIVE with full setup. All others were tested without being signed in and without any other hardware peripherals. All passed without issue except for REACH.

Follow my previous posts. Call and email Rob Bach. Call and email your XBOX Most Valued Professionals. Post on Channel 9 and email the people who run it. Call G4 and your local news station. If MS and Bungie get some pressure they will fix this. I would expect any fix to be relased internationally once this issue becomes "newsworthy".

If Bungie and Microsoft are willing to release a statement and accept responsibility, enbrace the fact that they did eventually take responsibility.

I did ask to be transferred to a dev. I was told that "that is impossible". I wouldn't expect them put me in contact with a developer right away, but they could at least have taken down some info and said, "maybe"; given the scope of this issue and the detail I was able to provide. I mean, seriously, I can repro the problem! As a developer, that's pretty invaluable when solving a problem and I can't believe they just blew me off. Even if they know what the problem is and they don't need my help, they could at least acknowledge it. I guess I'm not used to being treated that way by Microsoft or any other company when I'm an active developer on their platforms and I can't get a solution to work. If they treated me this way when I was writing Silverlight or WCF RIA solutions I would have abandoned the platform entirely by now.

I still can't believe that Microsoft, a company that should know better, it treating us this way! Don't they realize that these customer service issues affect how everyone views the Microsoft brand? I mean, they have their name on the console and the game?

i have the new xbox slim the game rip ok to hdd and plays ok.But in game you loose the gun fire sound and back ground music then at the end of the level when it tries to load the next level it disc read errors.Im not expert but to me this is a software issue. If the game is not loading then it is a hardware issue but if it loads and runs ok WITH ERRORS then it must be software.NO other game has a problem. i have been on to xbox customer support and they tell me its a hardware issue.when i tell them it is not affecting ANY other game he had no answer

Halo and CoD in the same boat?

This won't end well.

You know what, my copies of MW2 and Crackdown 2 have cracks near the center and still play flawlessly. Even my copy of Call of Cuty 2 has a scratch on it and it still plays just fine

Update: even though the only thing i had done on my new xbox was recover my gamertag strangely clearing the system cache actually seems to have worked! I have only had one freeze since doing it and was able to play without trouble for several hours. Definitely worth a try for anyone having trouble.

BOIL THE DISC!!

We were having same issues. Older launch console, 20gb hdd. Disc would always be seen as dvd. Put disc in boiling water for 10 sec and it has worked every since no issues. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose. There have been multiple posts about this on this thread.
