The Multi Disc is all the same game. How can they say that?

exactly what i said. he told me it doesnt matter if its the same game it matters that its 2 discs. I said BS he said sorry but thats our policy

Well, I bought Reach from Newegg. It arrived and my 360 would not recognize it as a game -- it would always recognize it as a DVD, a CD or not at all. After reading through this thread I saw the boiling technique, so I figured "why not?"

I boiled my disc for a couple of minutes, cleaned it off with some pumped hand soap (I guess something from the pot I was using got onto the disc because it looked grimy after boiling), cleaned it off with tap water, dried it off, and afterwards it seems to be working fine.

I'm about 25% installing it right now, so we'll see.

in what motion did you clean the disc with soap with?

mine is from newegg and i have thesame problem as you

I think at the point where customers are putting their media into boiling water to clean them, is where we officially say, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HERE.

You are hardcore, I dont boil water to eat much less clean a disc, at that point, its Bungie's problem.

87% done installing now...

I pretty much just pumped some directly onto the disc and using my fingertip and gently spiraled it around the disc. I used my t-shirt with a center-to-rim motion to dry it off.

95% done now.

EDIT: Sorry. Meant to reply and quote RIP rasalibre
EDIT 2: The game finished installing and I'm actually in the game now. So far so good.

So how does this boiling technique work? Do you put it into a pot or something?

  • 09.20.2010 4:00 PM PDT

Ive been having all these problems. First of all, when I played the Long Night of Solace, I got till the end and when the cut scene started, it went disc unreadable. After this, I tried all options and I could not start the mission at all, it just went disc unreadable.

WOrst of all, every time I end a game in any playlist (local or LIVE) I get the score and then it goes to dashboard and says disc unreadable. There are no scratches at all on my disc and I have a 2006 xbox360. I just got it used because my mw2 f*ed up my other xbox's disc drive.

Basically I just put about a couple of inches of water into a pot, put it on a burner on high and walked away for a couple of minutes. When it was boiling I dropped the Reach disc in, and a few seconds later took it off the burner and walked away for another couple of minutes. I came back, extracted it, noticed it looked grimy so I cleaned it, and it worked after the fact.

This whole situation is screwed up, I agree, but at least I can apparently play Reach now. I'm at least happy for that.

EDIT: I should mention that the disc did sink to the bottom of the pot after I took it off the burner, so I carefully used a butter knife to pry the disc up and flip it over shiny side up. Don't know if that made a difference or not.

Microsoft is currently still asking customers to pay an additional fee to "repair" their otherwise working console for those customers whose console is out of warranty. I have been contacting both my local news organizations as well as the ones posted above, and G4 and Joystiq with the following text:

"Thousands of people who have purchased Microsoft's new XBOX 360 game Halo Reach are reporting problems with the game on consoles that otherwise function normally. Microsoft support is telling people who purchased the game to send in their console for a software update and refusing to waive the $100 fee. The consoles do not appear to be defective in any way and both the console and game carry the XBOX 360 brand.

This may be a case of false advertising or corporate fraud. We ask you to investigate and report.

More information on the problem and Microsoft and Bungie's response can be found at http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=48970376&v iewreplies=true&postRepeater1-p=1"

If the official word does not change by tomorrow I am recommending that everyone contact your state Attorney General's office and your local and state consumer protection bureaus. Also file a complaint with your local Better Business Bureau.

If the official word does not change this week I will consider acquiring legal representation.

UPDATE:
There seems to be quite a bit of confusion going on at XBOX Support on this issue. I just called in again and was able to get a support specialist to take the console back for free. Her word to me was to tell you all not to accept no for an answer. If you speak with someone who is unwilling to send you a repair shipping label free of charge then hang up AFTER you receive your support case number and then call back until you receive a support person who is willing to assist you. She also said that this is a known problem with Halo ODST and that they can repair the console free of charge under that issue.

Oh, also, you can STOP with the boiling and soapy disks. This is a software and hardware incompatability problem. This likely has nothing to do with the disk you purchased.

Yeah that sounds too complex for me, I'll just wait since campaign is slowly starting to work for me. I don't want to risk harm to the disc

  • 09.20.2010 4:09 PM PDT

The food chain starts here, get in line.

Guys seriously NEVER use hand soap to clean a disk. Hand soap has abrasives and grit to aid dirt lifting. This issue isn't a disk issue because it's happening even if you install the game to your drive.

  • 09.20.2010 4:12 PM PDT

Vayeate OZ is right because my disk works on my nephew's 360 and not on mine.

  • 09.20.2010 4:26 PM PDT

chuck norris is the reason waldo is hiding

just BOILED IT AND IT FACKING WORKS YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

i just microwaved water till it boiled, took it out and dipped the disc in even though the water wasnt bubbling anymore

YESSSSSSSSS

Honestly, sticking a disc in boiling water seems like one of those retarded remedies that either don't work or make the situation work.

I mean how does boiling hot water help a disc to run better?

  • 09.20.2010 4:37 PM PDT

you know, the only thing i haven't tried is cleaning the disc, i mean, come on, it was fresh outta the package! i'm so desperate right now i'm about to go all swedish chef on it's ass, why not? i can always take it back if i mess it up more...

and could everyone who's having problems later in the game STFU about it, 90% of the people posting here haven't seen past the fist chapter... thanks in advance...

I don't know, but look at how many people it definitely worked for.

  • 09.20.2010 4:45 PM PDT

I was baking some taco shells so I decided why not throw my disc in there too. My disc is now brown and no longer works. :(

Today it took six (6!) ejects to get the game to read. It seems as though the problem is getting worse. I count myself lucky I was able to get it installed.

Maybe a solution would be granting us access to download and play the game without the needing the crap disc to work and we'll mail these useless coasters back to the home base.

$149.99. Paid. Gone. For frustration.

Called twice today with no new info,my xbox is 18 months old, they were giving free repairs, until today. I now have a Halo Heat game for sale, this sucks!

I have a Xbox 360 Elite (120gig) bought about a year ago. Had no problems with it at all. Bought Reach today, put it in, and during the first FMV it red ringed. Now even without the game in it is freezing up after a few minutes (But no red ring).

Did Reach break my console? I was playing Limbo and GoL yesterday with no problems....

My console broke during the first cutscene too. I was playing on a Pro with a 250 GB HDD (an official one from Microsoft). First time through the cutscene a bunch of colors flashed up and the screen went black. Restarted, a bunch of colors flashed during the first cutscene again, and the screen went a fuzzy red. Even after turning it off and on and removing the disc, my Xbox no longer outputs any video (still has sound though). I had to send it off for some $100, two-week repairs

The game worked fine on my friends' systems (one is a CoD MW2 special edition, and the other is an Xbox Arcade version).

  • 09.20.2010 5:13 PM PDT

Isn't it funny, I've put on 2000+ hours on 1 "Halo 3" disc.
Now, I'm on my 2nd "Halo Reach" disc in the past 4 days with the same freezing and "disc is unreadable" error messages.
Any other Xbox game plays fine, what is the deal?

In the top three reasons why I play Halo is because they test it for mistakes!
Who dropped the ball on this one?
I guess when you charge $60 a game, and sell around 3 million copies, there will be a few mistakes....

And to whoever tries to boil their disc is looking at a $60 coaster!

  • 09.20.2010 5:23 PM PDT

Still waiting for my console, hoping it comes soon, before i have to go to work just so i can test it at least and get back to you guys. New serial number means replaced console which then means that they couldn't fix the issue right?

  • 09.20.2010 5:24 PM PDT

bobby

the game works on my new xbox as well as others. So its obviously not the disk

  • 09.20.2010 5:26 PM PDT

UPDATE: I was able to play through three missions with no problems until I got the Exodus...the intro cutscene keeps looping over and over again...I'm giving in, I'm calling Microsoft tomorrow to see if I can send my xbox in
