I tried to contact NBC Chicago, unfortunately the email wasn't working properly, I'll try again later tonight, but this is what I put in the email

About a week ago Microsoft had one of it's biggest games came out, Halo: Reach. There is something behind this game that leaving many of it's players unable to play. The reports were first being put online just hours after the midnight release of the game, most of these reports were put on the forums of Bungie.net (the creator of the game). 6 days later, there are almost 2000 replies regarding this problem, and there are more every hour. The specifics of the problem are not always the same, sometimes players unable to play at all and unable to even start the game up, some players will be playing and all of a sudden their screen will freeze, leaving them to have to restart their Xbox 360 but only to have the game freeze again at some point.

I dug a little deeper into this and found out that there are specific consoles that are doing this, even more detail, this is happening to these Xbox 360 systems.
1st generation Xbox 360 with the 20gb harddrive (mostly 2005-2007 issued Xbox 360's), some Xbox 360 Elite systems, and even the newest Xbox 360 Slim 4GB version, which just hit the shelves this year.

Right now Bungie and Microsoft have not said anything about this problem and they do know about it. The only thing that has been said is to simply call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and when customers do that, they are only told to send it in, and since most of these Xbox 360's are older, they are no longer under warranty. Since that is the case, these customers are then told that they MUST pay $100 to have their Xbox 360 repaired. As an Xbox 360 player myself, I'm having the very same problem, but this is just an outrage. No one should have to pay $100 to have their system repaired just because Microsoft and Bungie made a critical flaw when making this game.

This is a problem made by Microsoft and Bungie, they should look into the problem and let everyone know that they are putting in an effort to solve this solution. Although, on the Bungie.net forum, there are some people saying that this problem can be fixed with a simple online update to the Xbox 360 software, if this is true, why hasn't Microsoft even stated they are working on a patch? and if it's false why don't they say they are working on another solution?

What is probably the most disturbing fact is that Microsoft, nor Bungie have said anything about this problem. They have not said if they are looking into it, they have not said if they're working on it, and even worse, they have not said if this problem will be fixed for those who are experiencing problems with the game.

Please send me a reply to what you guys think about this. This is a major corporation (and one of the most known) that made a mistake and they are not doing anything about it, except making their customers pay more money and to have to wait several weeks to get their Xbox 360 back. It's unbelievable to see them do this.

Soul slayer Ashido

I can't even start Exodus on my console. Right after the loading screen, it goes to disc unreadable. I already exchanged the disc so I doubt its a physical issue. I bought this game to have fun and right now it's giving me more stress than needed.

I really think there's two distinct problems here.

1. Some 360s are not recognizing some Reach discs as an XBox 360 game disc. (My problem among some others)
2. Some 360s are having trouble with disc read errors while playing Reach. (Not the problem I was having nor seem to be having now)

The disc boiling thing, while crazy, seemed to help several of us with problem 1. Maybe this is a problem with the disc. Problem 2 perhaps isn't a disc problem but a console problem. I think there needs to be some distinguishing between the two problems.

  • 09.20.2010 6:15 PM PDT

yeah and maybe MS need to come forward and tell us that there is a problem. Instead they are hiding in the background probably just hoping that this will all go away and we will all get so fed up that we go buy a new xbox...

Bungie replies after 15 pages to some dudes whinging about being banned in gruntpocalypse, but they can't actually try and help us out with this... Shame on you bungie

  • 09.20.2010 6:20 PM PDT

Bungie hasn't said in a few days now

  • 09.20.2010 6:28 PM PDT

Does anyone know how we can get hold on Bungie through the phone?

  • 09.20.2010 6:29 PM PDT

I didn't actually boil my disc, per se. What I did was heat a mug of distilled water in the microwave for 3 minutes, then pour it into a bowl, then slip the disc into the bowl. The water was simmering, but not at a boil.

Interestingly, I noticed bubbles form on the read side of the disc. This leads me to believe that something on the disc, perhaps a scratch-resistant coating, was evaporating off the disc. When I (carefully) fished it out of the water (still hot), I noticed an acrid scent. I believe that the hot water technique is removing a thin chemical coating which may be causing the laser to be diffuse and refract to a degree in which it cannot read the disc, resulting in disc read errors.

Whether this is true or not, I do know that after applying this technique, the rate at which I receive disc read errors has reduced fantastically. In fact, it is quite rare that I gt one now, as opposed to all of the time before hand. My instances of cut-scene errors has declined sharply, but sadly, has not yet been eliminated entirely.
During matchmaking, I can load and play any map with no problems whatsoever, with the notable exception of "boardwalk," which tends to freeze my xbox when I near a certain set of stair. This happens approximately 30-35% of the times I play that map.

I would not have attempted this if it weren't for the fact that my first copy only worked after much coaxing, prompting me to exchange it for another copy, which only worked slightly less badly. I had to do something, because I sure wasn't going to buy a 4th xbox.

While not a guaranteed fix, the hot water technique can restore playability to an otherwise useless disc. I would advise people who attempt this to put a disc in a separate bowl of hot water as opposed to dropping it in the pot itself. Leaving it in a hot pot on a burner risks melting the disc, leading to several different problems unrelated to what consumers are currently experiencing.

Honestly, sticking a disc in boiling water seems like one of those retarded remedies that either don't work or make the situation work.

I mean how does boiling hot water help a disc to run better?

Actually, I think I can shed some light on this. Are you familiar with the physical construction of DVD media? In the case of dual layer discs (which this is), there are two partial thickness physical pieces that are glued together to make the final disc. You can see this on most DVDs by looking at the edge of it. Apparently a lot of the Halo: Reach discs are poorly made. I have had two copies of the game now. Both have visible areas on the bottom where the disc layers are poorly glued together. I think the boiling heats up the glue and allows it to spread out and set properly.

I am not sure how much of this is just a bug in the program since, in many cases, the disc is only seen as a DVD or not at all (meaning the program never loads). It may be that some drives are able to read through this distortion better than others and the ones that can't can be fixed with a firmware update to the drives.

The other possibility that comes to mind actually makes more and more sense the more I think about it. I believe that these issues are the result of anti-piracy efforts. Microsoft may have tried to slip some updated drive mod detection into the game to catch pirates and the update has issues with certain makes or models of drive. I don't think the 360 even has the ability to update the DVD drive's firmware (the reason pirates are "safe" from having their modded firmware replaced or broken). This is probably some sort of soft mod to the drive firmware that gets stored in the system cache. This explains why clearing your system cache and/or removing your hard drive seems to partially fix the issue and also why installing the game to your hard drive doesn't fix it. Something in the soft mod is broken and sometimes glitches and causes the drive to lose the ability to read the disc. Even if it isn't actively reading, the drive maintains awareness of the disc inside. When the glitch occurs, this awareness gets scrambled and the drive sends a message to the console that it can't read the disc. The console receives the message and throws up the disc read error.

Seriously, think about it. Microsoft knows that this game is going to be massively pirated and, as far as I know, they are not currently able to detect or do anything about the newer firmware mods the pirates are using. Reach gives them an opportunity to strike back at a large number of them.

The problem that I have been having is that the opening cutscene keeps replaying itself. And anytime I go into another game mode I the DRE messege. I called 1-800-4-myxbox and all I could seem to get was that my warranty was out and they would charge me to fix the problem. Finally after two and a half hours of arguing with 6 different people, I got an escalation specialist supervisor to promise me a free repair. So we'll see how that goes tommorow since they wanted me to exchange the game to see if that would resolve the issue(Big surprise! it didn't) One thing I thought was wierd was they told me they were aware of a small number of people with the problem, like less than 50. Way to downsize it Microsoft even tho this thread has almost 2000 posts in 6 days!!!

To Fiann, this is not piracy, the game works on some and not on others, mostly 2006-2008 model console's, my nephew has the 2009 console and my disk works fine on his console, and is junk on my console, and bought at wal-mart. He is playing it right now!

  • 09.20.2010 7:19 PM PDT

This happen to me to most of my games keep saying games 'PLay DVD' and all i do is open the disc tray and close it about 5 to 10 times and sooner or later it will say play game. Im pretty sure its my xbox is messed. First xbox 360 and this is the only annoying part of it.

  • 09.20.2010 7:21 PM PDT

Mine reads as either "Play DVD" or doesn't read at all. I have a 60GB xbox from around 2007-8. I don't remember. I'm thinking about boiling the disk, just because there's nothing else to do right now. I'm damn positive that I'm not wasting any more of my money on this box.

Subject: Disc Not Reading

Not necessarily. I have an elite and it has the problem a lot. I think it actually has to do with over heating. If i let it cool off(even though its not very hot) or just keep booting up the game, by the 3rd time, it works effeciantly. My biggest issue is that it has kicked my from the game just as a matchmaking session is about to begin. This has happend a lot. So much so, that bungie wouldnt allow me to play for a while because i "had left too many matches".

No, you misunderstand. I think this is due to ANTI-piracy by Microsoft gone wrong. I think they tried to do a software patch to the DVD drives and screwed it up on one or more models.

Based on the chart at 360drives.com it appears that I have a Lite-On. It might be educational to see what brand of drive other people with the issue have as well. At the least it could show us if the problem seems to be confined to a single model of drive.
