I don't think we should be blaming Bungie. I realize they are the ones responsible for developing the game, but M$ is the one calling all the shots. They are the publisher and, in this case, money talks. I'm sure Bungie and MS signed a NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) meaning that any official statements would be released or approved by MS. So I wouldn't blame Bungie.

The idea that this is a new DRM technique is interesting. It's possible, but very risky considering they are screwing over some of their longtime fans. I don't think 1800 posts could come from "a very small number of consumers". I really hope this issue doesn't just fade away and never get addressed officially.

Everyone has to relax about these kind of problems!

Bungie and MS will only say there is a problem only when the actual problem is isolated, and a patch can be made.

I had the same kind of problems with the game "Darksiders".
The game would freeze, and have loading issues all the time.
It took a good MONTH until there was finally a downloadable patch through Xbox Live.

i didn't pay for a game to play it in a month.

  • 09.22.2010 9:05 AM PDT

I called Microsoft's customer support line and was informed I would have to pay $99 for a new optical drive because my current one is incompatible with Reach.

I was also called "sir" repeatedly by the customer support guy until I told him my name was Diane. (Girls play Halo, too!)

I explained to him how I thought it was bunk that my 2007 Spartan console couldn't play a HALO game and he was very nice and apologetic but said as of right now there's no other solution, especially since my console's so out of warranty. I'm not going to replace my optical drive since $99 is ridiculous, but instead I'm just gonna wait this one out.

I'm doubly upset because I can play MOST of the game...I just can't finish the campaign beyond Pillar of Autumn, load some maps in Firefight, or download the game to my harddrive. There's a few other errors too here and there.

I'm just frustrated that I bought the Limited Edition and poured all of this money into the Halo franchise to be slapped in the face at the very end. Come on, Microsoft. Throw me a bone.

Subject: Disc Not Reading? Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for support (see page 35).

I called as well. Xbox tells me to either send in my out-of-warranty xbox for repair, or to send the game back. Either way Xbox and MS are robbing consumers of money (shipping or repair costs).

This is extremely bad business. Companies always show their true colors when it comes to customer issues and complaints, and Xbox and Bungie make Toyota look like the Customer Service Company of the Year...

Also, all customer service can tell you is what is posted on their screen. I was on the phone for a half hour and couldn't get any reasonable options or actual explanation of the problem. They will not act in any way that is favorable for the consumer. I think it is time to switch to Playstation and give up on playing Halo...

Also, if you send your Xbox in. Be prepared to wait 2-3 weeks before you get to play Halo. Many of us have waited all year for this release, since we are so loyal to the franchise. Now we are told to &^%* off, pay more money, and wait another month. Bravo Xbox/Bungie. I also, agree that this is mainly a MS XBOX issue. They need to offer a concrete solution to this problem asap.

My system. Orignal Pro with no HDMI and 20gb drive. No problems ever wtih games and once repaired for RROD.

What I have learned to date:

There are many problems with this game! mine to date were...

1. Disc read errors (this only happen to me on my 3rd try on a brand new disc, so for boiling it has worked to fix the read problems only.)

2. Game freezes my xbox in multiplayer, usually when alot is going on in big team. it just stops dead frozen on the last frame. this happens quite often(at least every 3 games) and is extremely annoying because everytime i log back in, I am banned for "quitting". Thanks bungie!!!

3. Campaign. 3 discs and same problem, first cut scene with helis repeats forever. if i install game to HD instead of repeat it just crashes to blackish screen.

Semiwork arounds and Info that points directly to the problems of quality control and testing of all hardware.

1. Boil disc that get the read errors, sadly that works. I just put cup of water in micro for 3 min then poured into glass bowl. add 1 cheaply made halo reach disc and let sit for 1 min, then wipe off.

2. I have no idea what makes this freeze in MP happen but i susspect memmory write errors.

3. I was able to find away around the glitching repeating cut scene before you even get to start the campaign by:

A: take out your HD and put in a usb drive and format.

B: Recover gamertag to a usb drive and update the software when asked.

C: Boot to USB drive and start the game....the game now flows perfectly past the cutscenes and into the game. after the first checkpoint go to the menu and choose save and exit. go to memory tab to ensure save game is there on usb drive.

D: yank USB and put back HD....recover gamertag back to hard drive(yes i know this sucks) Keep USB around incase you get stuck at cut, then simply reload the file or keep backups of good checkpoints on ubs drive.

E: delete save games from your hard drive for reach and clear cache. turn off xbox.

F: Restart xbox go to menus then put in usb drive, copy your halo reach save to HD then pull usb again.

G: start reach and make sure to select resume campaign....this will start you off after the first cut scene and into game play mode. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT if you die before you save and quit at next checkpoint you will get stuck back at the looping mission intro.

This proves that there is a bug!! all i did was remove the hd and sub in usb for the exact moment that the cutscene transfer you to the game and it works. SO RIGHT THERE IS ALL MS AND BUNGIE NEEDS TO LOOK AT.

I know this doesnt help you people stuck later in the game, but be creative and try swapping around some save files around the time before you freeze.

funny i didnt know i was paying to be a beta tester!!!!

MS AND BUNGIE, how much more info do you need?????

From:A pissed off gamer and shareholder of MSFT and ATVI...which just partnered with Bungie.

This would never ever happen with a blizzard game! lol

I had my Reach on a white, hdmi equipped 360 with a 250gb hdd, after about 10 or so instances of freezing, I now have the RROD. My other white xbox with the same hdd equipped plays the game fine (knock on wood). Hopefully since the game gave me the RROD, it should be a free repair.

Is it normal for the Halo:Reach disc to appear "cloudy" on the data side?

  • 09.22.2010 11:07 AM PDT

Okay, I'm trying the disc boiling thing. Okay, it's put a cup of water into the mircowave for 3 minutes right? Then pour it into a bowl and put the disc in for one minute? I put the disc in facing up or down

i was just at my local gamestop for 3 hours tring serveral diffrent xboxs. . I as the rest of you all are having this problem.disk crash, multiple disks tried. no sounds at points cant play end of game. can watch any saved files. from what i fuigered out the problems exists in the harddrive itself. what ever xbox i would put my harddrive on would cause the errors to start happening. no harddrive or another persons harddrive and it was running like a top. its not your xbox. heck i dont even have a saved game file saved anywhere on my system. yet its magicall all there still on or offline. remove your harddrive and start your disk. betcha it runs like a top. sounds to me like there was an update and all our games crashed in the middle of update or something along those lines. THANK YOU SO MUCH MICROSOFT OR BUNGIE OR WHOEVERS TO BLAME. im glad i get to sit around trying to play a game i just spent 60 dollars on while all my fiend around me rank up and get ahead. so awsome for a competive gamer like myself who actually allready made a bet before the damn game came out with his cousin for 50.00 bucks that id rank up first.... effing wonderful. i hate you bungie and microsoft u can eat s**t.

I noticed that Ausgreenlantern is gone too. I checked his gamertag, and if it's the same as his forum ID he's played eight games, 3 of which are in campaign.

Anyone else find it incredibly creepy that this guy was all about telling us whether or not the fixed consoles work and now he's effectively disappeared, along with all his posts?

I also have the DRE that keeps dropping me in the middle of campaign/MP games. I've gotten to the very last mission but shortly after the bridge jump it freezes. I've played this mission at least 15 times, tried everything from resetting the cache, trading in the game, installing, etc. Nothing works and now, like everyone else, I can't finish the game.

There is some good news, though. G4TV's webmaster did send me an email that they have requested 'A more detailed response' from Microsoft and are waiting to hear back from them. So it seems like one of the news outlets is finally realizing the problem is worse than MS has let on and is showing some interest!

MS just received my console. I dropped it off at UPS last friday. Hopefully it'll be shipped back to me soon.

This is why I jumped off the Bungie bandwagon after they released Halo 2. To me the series died after 1.

You should NOT be charged for repairs if you are experiencing this issue. Call them back, please. If they continue to insist that you need to pay for repairs, please PM me with your Case ID (subject line: Disc Read Error).

So I just boiled my disc (ran it under superhot sink water for a couple minutes) and my campaign loaded but the audio is clipping in the background of the load screen.

My 360 sounds like it's eating the disc right now.

Kind of confused as to how boiling made it work, but hey, whatever.

Oh, and don't boil your discs. Frying won't work, either.

I will for sure, Urk. I won't have to pay even though my box is out of warranty?

Now my box isn't recognizing my Harddrive...but it is playing the Reach campaign...which I guess is good enough for right now.

ETA: Spoke too soon. It won't load the campaign. It just gets stuck on the load screen after the campaign select screen. Sadface.

Urk, are you a Bungie employee? It sounds like you know what's going on. If so, do you mind letting us know if we should be sending in our boxes now or waiting for a patch to come out? It would be massively helpful in making an informed decision about the best way to solve our problems.

To Die Satisfied

Ok, guys I think its a dics issue not a consule. Hears my story, launch day I rented Reach worked fine. Yesterday I took it back cause it was due back purchased Reach.

It didnt work. Went to a different store bought Reach just put it in like 5 minutes ago working fine.

I hope you guys get to playing soon and good luck.

Sollution 1:

How to fix the DRE when...
A) You can't get in to campaign mode and it just keeps repeating the initial cut scenes and or throws a DRE after the scenes

B) You can't get in to a multilayer match, you get a DRE when a map finishes loading

The fix:
I exchanged my disk for another to no avail. I have a console probably from 2007ish, regular 20gb. Turn off your console and put in a USB flash drive. Remove your hard drive. Start your console and recover your gamertag with just your USB drive in. Try to play halo now and get past the read error spots. Worked like a charm for me. Leave your Hard drive out until bungie releases a patch.

Unfortunately this seems like a case where Bungie didn't test the game with all the variations of hardware that xbox comes with.

Give me feedback on this fix and let me know if it fixes the specific DRE that i am talking about. Don't comment if you dont have the same DRE error in the same spots.

Agreed. Urk this is not random and more and more people are finding their way here, please let people know exactly what you know.

Full disclosure is the best and only way to interface with the people who support you with their hard earned money. We are being treated like idots here and left to boiling discs and wasting our time troubleshooting this for YOU since both MS and Bungie are not able to shed but a sliver of light with call MS and ship your console here.

Every other game works perfectly on my xbox....why should i send it way for a few weeks with out exact information on what is being done and why. I should be able to make an educated and informed choice what I am to do with my time, and property.

Please enlighten the maybe "small" but still important (not to mention the still growing!!) part of your gaming population that isnt having so much fun with your product at the time.

Urk, I look forward to a response to the overwhelming demand for disclosure.

Soul slayer Ashido

Going to return it tomorrow for the second time.

  • 09.22.2010 12:42 PM PDT

I've returned mine 3 times. I think I'm just going to give up and just stick with MW2. This is completely ridiculous. And I'm damn sure not going to pay $120 for repairs to play ONE game.

  • 09.22.2010 12:52 PM PDT

will either of you that previously posted you are returning try the sollution fix i posted above?

  • 09.22.2010 12:53 PM PDT

The reason why some people are trying this "trial and error" with their hard drive, is because IT IS A SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE ISSUE!!!!!
This might be because of an earlier update done to Xbox Live, and the update may have been saved to your Xbox 360 harddrive, which could explain why people that are trying to use a flashdrive instead it isn't working either because they are on XBL, and when you start up your Xbox your using Live already.

If someone can please test this out (my bros gf took my flash drive because hers is lost).

(before you do this, make sure the Xbox 360 is off)
1: take out the Xbox 360 hard drive
2: put in a flash drive that has never been used on an Xbox 360 before, and put it in the USB port
3:MAKE SURE YOU TAKE OUT ANYTHING IN THE ETHERNET PORT (This will assure you that you will not be connected to XBL)
4: turn on your Xbox 360 and it will ask you to format the USB drive, press yes
5: try playing the campaign and see if it freezes.

If it doesn't, that means the problem lies within the hard drive for sure, and that there is ~80% chance that this problem is being caused by an update for XBL (an update that happened in the past)

I'm not sure of XBL updates are saved to an internet memory on the Xbox 360, but if it isn't, then the problem could be in an update for XBL in the past.
