As one of the people who has a repaired console on the way back to me already, I am doing better with the entire situation.

I will throw another theory as to what is happening based on the responses. Since Bungie has posted we should not be paying for this repair, we can assume they actually know what the problem is. We can also assume that when Microsoft was confronted with this they ran the numbers and decided repairing the 360 consoles affected would be cheaper then spending the programming time to fix it. Now if we can believe it is the firmware on the optical drive that needs to be upgraded then we ask the question why?

Either upgrading the firmware will:
1.) Cause the disc to read correctly as there are new anti-piracy measures in place as suggested by others
OR
2.) Allow Bungie to make some low level system calls to the optical drive to allow for faster load times. These calls not available on all drives was not found until late in the development process.

Well if this keeps up, we'll get an appearance from a Mod every 50 pages or so XD

Stop your complaining until you try the solution posted by 2 users on the previous page. If that doesn't work, then complain away.

Issues happen in the IT world. Get over it, you can return it and get your money back. Nothing is perfect and it takes time to fix issues. They are obviously working on a fix and that takes time.

I am pretty sure my issue is a bad DVD. His reach DVD loaded fine in my new Slim 250, and MY dvd would NOT load in his oldschool 60GB pro. His DVD worked great in both consoles. Mine Failed in both systems.

Sounds to me like poorly pressed DVDs. Some of the Xbox optical hardware simply looks to be able to cope with the pressings better than others. I'm not ever going to say boiling a DVD is good, but probably looks as if the heat is helping bond the layers together. I'll just patiently wait for a new DVD.

LOL i paid 60$ for a game i CAN'T return. (another 40$ for a usb cord and 3 month membership that are also useless now and can't be returned) do NOT tell me to get over it.

Now i have to go buy a USB drive because THEY can't fix THEIR problems????? and it PROBABLY won't even work!

We have the right to complain and YOU can get over it!

idk if you noticed but most places don't let you return opened items... even if they don't work.

the store i bought mine from actually tested the game when i tried to return it and told me it was fine and there was nothing they can do about it.

and i shouldnt have to jump thru hoops to play a damn game

  • 09.22.2010 1:28 PM PDT

if the disk didn't work then why didn't you return it right then and there? I brought mine back and exchanged it, didn't work. Then i returned it no problem because i told them the disk wasn't working. All you gotta do is ask management and explain the situation instead of complaining on a message board.

Ya if you keep the disk for multiple days then go back later and say it doesnt work of course they wont return it. You buy the game, it doesnt work, you return it then and there. If you waited this long to return the game and they wont take it back its your FAULT. If you return it right away... aka you take it home try it, it doesnt work, you return it... you wont have a problem. Hell print off these 80 pages and show it to them

You have the right to complain and i have the right to tell you to get over it and stop complaining. i never said you didn't have the right.

Go get a USB stick from 2004 for 5 bucks, throw it in, and try the fix. If it doesnt work then complain all you want. Bungie doesn't care how much you complain. They'll work on a fix and post it when its ready.

If you honsetly think you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to play a game you have definitely never played a computer game.

I just tried the fix and it made no difference. Just to be sure though, I'm NOT supposed to get an Xbox live update correct?

  • 09.22.2010 1:45 PM PDT

No, you are. I did and it worked just fine. My steps are a little different. If i had something to test it on i would this is what i did:

1)Remove Hard drive and put in flash drive

2)Turn on xbox and load halo reach

3)Start the campaign get to a spot of where you can shoot and then quit the game.

4)Go back to the dashboard and recover your gamertag
Download the xbox live update

5)Start the game and boom. worked

Note: this is only tested when you get a DRE at: loading the campaign, loading a multiplayer map.

Didn't work for me. Even with the hard drive removed, I still got DREs. That's why I sent mine in.

  • 09.22.2010 2:35 PM PDT

Did you use a flash drive? Just removing the hard drive does no good. It has something to do with re-downloading the xbox live update

Full disclosure is the best and only way to interface with the people who support you with their hard earned money. We are being treated like idots here and left to boiling discs and wasting our time troubleshooting this for YOU since both MS and Bungie are not able to shed but a sliver of light with call MS and ship your console here.

The support path to resolve this issue, free of charge, is to call Microsoft customer support at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX, report the issue, and follow their instructions. If they do not resolve your issue, please notify me via PM here at Bungie.net with the Case ID and the subject line "Disc Read Error."

You are not being asked to troubleshoot this issue on your own. Exchanging your disc will not resolve this issue. Boiling, or otherwise attempting to repair your disc will not resolve this issue. Creating new Xbox LIVE profiles will not resolve this issue. What will resolve the issue is contacting Microsoft for support and following their instructions.

We know it sucks to buy a game and not be able to play it. Obviously we want as many people as possible to play our games (it's why we make 'em). Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to resolve your issue from our end.

Brett I tried the method you posted and still got an error. Urk, if it's something that we have to physically send our systems in, then make it imperative that in the next Weekly update that this issue is mentioned. Also, if that's the case, then at least tell us what is the problem since if you're telling us to send it in, you must have a hint of what the problem is.

i find it ridiculous that i payed $60 for my game and cant play without an error coming up every 5 min and to top it off you tell me to call Microsoft who give me a few bull methods to fix it that dont work and they tell me i got to send in my console to fix and its going to cost me $150 "but dont worry the shipping and handling are free" and is it really the console problem if i can play all my other games just fine except halo reach and i got the normal edition of the game for a reason i did not have the money for the legendary edition so what makes you think i got the money to fix my system this is just really ridiculous

So, just to be clear, you are saying there WONT be a patch and the only way to play is to send the consoles in? Is it worth it to wait to see if a patch will be released online, or would I be wasting my time and should just send it in? I just want to know if there will be a patch, wont be, or its unknown at this time, and what would be quicker, sending in the console, or waiting for an online software update?

The resolution is not a patch.

Urk, I have flipped through all 80 pages of this thread. It seems pretty obvious that internally, be it at MS or Bungie, the issue itself is reasonably well understood, but that MS is forcing users to jump through hoops in an effort to minimize their expense in dealing with the problem.

I myself called in, went through what can only be described as a stop-gap effort that did allow me to load my game at that time, but all the while I could tell that the rep had additional steps to rectify the issue that he wasn't articulating. At that time, I decided not to pursue it, as the game eventually loaded. If/when the issue comes up again, I will not be so accommodating.

I can appreciate your position, as I believe either you know what the issue is, or if you don't, you at least know that someone does understand it, and you are being told not to discuss it directly here. That is a shame, because you really are trying to do the right thing, even with your hands tied behind you back.

For what it's worth, please report up the chain that it seems pretty obvious that behind closed doors the issue is understood, but that MS is not willing to cop to the root cause. The lack of information is infuriating, and having MS, through you, keep telling us to call in and essentially be handled on a case by case basis is ridiculous.

Wasting an hour of my free time in the evening, which is incredibly finite and precious, just to jump through the customer service script is NOT the way this should be handled. For goodness sake, going to the xbox.com/support site specifically for Reach doesn't even make any direct reference to this problem, which is insane.

Again, I know you are trying to do the right thing with the limited wiggle room you have been given, so please get the following sentiment to someone with some corporate muscle. As such, the following is not directed at you, Urk, but rather to whomever is tying on the gag:

The smoke and mirrors technique that MS is using to cloud this issue is not appreciated, and it is quite obvious that obfuscation, with the hope of brushing things under the rug, is the plan here. To anyone paying attention, we can tell you already know what the issue is, or at the very least, understand a LOT more than is being made public. Just make it clear to your loyal user base, deal with it in a forthright manner, and win back some credibility!

The resolution is not a patch. So.... its to send my console in(deep breath) to let me play one game. Ok. How long from the moment the Xbox gets shipped, till it gets back to my house should it be?

Subject: Disc Not Reading? Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for support (see page 35).

Soul slayer Ashido

I just perform some tests that were quite interesting people...

I tried loading the first campaign level without any storage device attached, and it loaded up, died a few times without any disc unreadable. I also was able to load up a custom game on forge world, and start two firefight missions.

I put my hard drive in, and when I loaded the level, it didn't even start the mission before it gave me the disc unreadable. This was both offline, cleared system cache, signed into my profile. I deleted the install file and it still occurred a second time.

Oddly enough, I tried my flash drive with my profile and info, and it still gave me the error from there as well.

Now before you start screaming "Your hard drive is defective, buy a new one." I borrowed my friend's HDD as well and tried it, and the same thing that occurred for my HDD occurred for his, yet when both of our HDD's are used on his Xbox, the issue is not there.

Also

Urk, I contacted support and a representative and I went through the many steps to get it to work. He was set on that my HDD was defective, but once I told him my friend's HDD was also not working on my console but worked on his, he had no idea what to tell me. They did not give me a CASE ID so I can't tell you that in a PM.

If this doesn't confirm it's a problem when ANY storage device is connected to certain modules of the Xbox360 then I don't know what else will. I don't know if I will return the game anymore, because it's obvious that it's not the disc now.

Can you tell me if i have it?It was able to 100% save to the hard drive and everything works fine except it freezes sometimes during campaign.I can play multiplayer and firefight no problem.
