Urk! Why are we now apparently being charged to have our consoles fixed. I have to say this is one of the biggest video game cluster-blam!-s in recent memory

what do u mean apparently now ..they have been trying to charge us the whole time except for the select few

I called xbox support 2 days ago. We cleared cache, still dre's. took out the hdd, didnt get dre but the game did freeze. then installed, this seemed to work for a little while. but started to get dres in the usual areas, in addition the game would sometimes have a green screen upon loading which didnt happen before install.

interestingly enough i was playing last night(or trying to anyway) i was getting dres like usual. so i restart my xbox(for like the seventh time that day) and suddenly no dres, checkpoints loaded up normally, no looping cutscenes, i was finally able to pass the first campain mission. was able to enter and 'exit' online multiplayer with no dre.

i was happy...and confused. what happened? did it just fix itself? guess i will see when i play tonight.

Same thing happened with me, followed the same steps, except I transfered all of my reach data and profile onto a usb stick and still had game freeze. My wife came home from work so I got her to make a spartan and play co-op with me, we played all the way from the beginning to exodus with no problems. today I played through single player to pillar of autumn again with no problems. self fix? Couldn't say but I'm not complaining and enjoying it while it lasts. Here's hoping more of us have the same success.

Thats sucks Madmom :( Even though I have DRE's as well I feel bad for you in your situation and agree with you about how they dont understand our value of our dollar. I miss the days back when the n64 came out. Hell I played that console for so many years and after all these years it still plays just fine with no problems(except blowing into the game cartidges sometimes). Now we have consoles that break in under a year or two, and eventually when we are not covered by our warrenty, we have to give more of our hard money to these companies because of these flaws.

We still have all old Nintendo game systems and they still work but I guess that is comparing apples to oranges.

I figured it was my "Turn" to get on the phone with MS for the second time. I had an email they sent me with the long list of trouble shooting to try and a service ID number. They could not find my service number in the system. My email is dated 9/16. But when I told her we bought the Legendary edition she set up a new service number and will send a label to return my disc.
They know our system, it is registered with them. I myself have returned the disc several times. Do they think a new disc will play?

  • 09.23.2010 12:52 PM PDT

It seems like their entire system and customer service script is grounded on the idea of keeping people busy while they work out whatever the problem is.

I have a week until the 14-day opened product return policy at Best Buy ends. I really hope its fixed before then so I can return the disc if I need to.

hmmm....interesting. Let's just see if it continues to work. Maybe it was just a fluke. Even if it does continue to work its hard to tell what fixed it, because i wasnt doing anything but playing the game when the change happened.

Its like borderline theft. If this thread reaches 100 pages before we get a reasonable solution, (and no calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX is not a reasonable solution, I shouldn't have to pay an additional $100 to play a game I already bought)....I'm walking to Microsoft and flipping them off :P

  • 09.23.2010 1:26 PM PDT

I had bad DRE in the beginning, now it lets me play fine. Sometimes I'll get DRE when it's loading a checkpoint or I die. However, Exodus never creates a checkpoint and I'm stuck trying to beat it on legendary without dieing.

I blame Reach. There's no way a brand new Slim(literally bought this piece of junk to get reach working)would get DRE.

BUNGIEYOUBADLOL.

After getting several dre when exiting lobbies post match, I decided to install the game to the hard drive. Guess what, dre still, this certainly must be some kind of software bug

I have a new 4gb slim with a 250gb hard drive installed and I play the game off the hard drive. After a few days of it playing fine I was playing campaign and then some of the sound effects stop playing. I decided to restart from a check point and I pause the game and instead of the pause screen I get a black screen then a DRE message. I had been playing the game for a few hours up to that point with no problem. A DRE while playing from the hard drive makes no sense since it was running off the hard drive leading me to believe that it is some software bug.

I don't consider this to be an acceptable solution; sending in to Microsoft an almost brand new Xbox Slim (with built in hard drive)... that makes no sense.

We bought this particular machine (our FOURTH 360 now, for the love of Pete) to replace a failing Elite.

The Xbox 360 is the "center of our digital living room" like MS wants it to be. We don't have cable for television, we have Netflix. We use it to watch movies or download movies. We use it for games. My kids use it for their games.

Sending that "center of our digital living room" away for an indeterminate amount of time to play only one (1) game [when all other games work just fine] is unacceptable without further information.

Why can't we get a straight answer here?

It's also unacceptable to ship a rather delicate console to wherever these things go; even if it's covered under warranty to fix whatever problem this Halo Reach disc seems to be the cause of - it seems likely that shipping it would just cause more problems down the road. For only (1) game, that seems a bit ridiculous.

Anyone else agree?

I Agree!!!!
Hi all I have been lurking here since the game came out. This above is Me. I bought my son who is a huge halo fan the Legendary edition. It all he wanted for his birthday. I went to gamestop every pay day and paid my hard earned money. BAD ECONOMY and all. Now this game barely works HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
We use our "old" 360 pro 20 hhd as our entire entertainment system also. I cannot afford to purchase a new game system every 3 years can you? I find it poor business practice and very corrupt to assume we will upgrade or be forced to. Do they understand the Value of our dollar these days?

I agree also! I love video games and not just Halo. I don't see the point in sending in my console for ONE GAME! Like many others on here my warranty ran out. Just recently actually as my third Xbox RROD'd on me a year ago. I don't feel like arguing with Customer Support for hours to get what should be an AUTOMATIC FREE REPAIR! FOR ONE GAME!?!? No thanks M$! You've got my $60 for a game that doesn't work and I feel cheated! I don't need to stand in line for more abuse! The only way I will feel vindicated is through a CLASS ACTION SUIT against M$ or a formal apology from M$ with plans to make swift and effective restitution of this problem. So far the response from the producers of HALO:REACH has been unacceptable!

Soul slayer Ashido

I was able to beat the campaign and play additional multiplayer matches with my console vertical and using a flash drive without any problems. I'm going to try reattaching my HDD in a bit and pray that just having the system vertical is the solution.

The food chain starts here, get in line.

Ok just got off the phone with support, I was asked to send my disk in to be replaced.

Now first of all I find this very dubious, I exchanged my Halo Reach Legendary copy at Gamestop for a regular copy due to my DRE on the first copy I bought. However I am still having the same issue so it's obviously not a disk read error. How can I be assured that it's a problem with the disk and not my Xbox?

The other issue is that I can no longer play Xbox Original games including the original Halo and Halo 2. Don't tell me there isn't a connection. Now this is an Elite that went out of warranty in January of this year, and now your telling me I need to pay $119 for a repair.

@Urk I've PM you my SR and my issue, Thanks.

so i set up my repair on saturday and waited for my shipping label to be emailed to me.....i then called yesterday,(with no shipping label sent) and the lady proceeded to tell me they would be MAILING ME A FREAKIN LABEL!!!! so i have to now wait 7-9 business days for a label, and 2-3 weeks to send it in and get my xbox back to play one game. this is the WORST video game experience i have ever had.....thank u bungie for supplying me with this

Just another update. I beat the campaign with my boiled disk and not a single DRE.

Again, not suggesting boiling your disc to fix DREs. Just saying that I received a game that my 360 would not even recognize as a game, tried disc swapping, restarting the console several times, playing with and without memory unit and hard drive with no improvements. After I boiled the disk it started working and has absolutely no problems through the entire campaign.

I *really* think there is a disc pressing problem and a software compatibility problem, and they're separate problems.

I truly believe there was something physically wrong with my Reach disc that was corrected by heating it up. I don't know what could have happened, but after nothing else worked, it did and is still working.

Uejji, you are my savior. I could not get Halo to run for the life of me but had the same problem as you. Replicated your steps and Reach is installing now. I, sir, owe you a drink!

i called last wednesday morning, i don't have a printer so i had them send the labels to me... still haven't got anything in the mail, i think they forgot about me or they're too busy. they already charged me 119 dollars though... welp, i'm off to search for a box to send it away in now, hope i get those shipping labels soon....

After returning two discs, buying a new one from a different store, and countless fix attempts, I finally got my copy to run. Everything is not perfect, and sometimes get DRE, but have played some marathon single player/multiplayer sessions.

Considering all the random crap I did, it's hard to tell what worked (or whether something worked itself out, I have a sneaking suspicion this problem originates with Live and something may have been "fixed" without an update):

1. Disconnect HDD, disconnect from Live
2. Stand system vertical
3. Play game (this is where it worked, if not, try again?)
4. turn system off, insert HDD
5. Play game again
6. If everything is working, reconnect to Live
7. enjoy it while it lasts

EDIT: In retrospect, the HDD step may have not been an issue. Also, i installed the game as soon as I could. Damn this is confusing, this is obnoxious. @ below, yea, this should be illegal.

Tried it, didn't work. The weird part is that the last disc I had would only let me play single player if my HDD was taken out. This one one won't even load up the second level with or without the harddrive in it. I got my 360 back from repair last year November and the warranty ended in March...at least I think

It's not even that the disc won't read for me, but when i start the campaign i only have the choice of playing the first mission, and once it is complete that is it.
I also cannot play matchmaking. i am connected to X Box Live.
when i start the disc and it loads the ads of the developers a green screen pops up and won't go away until i hit the A button.
Can someone with a little more knowledge than me be of any assistance? thanks

Wow that's two people today that are now being told to send in disks. That's the third solution from support now. So far people have been told to:

Send in their 360
Send in their hard drive
Send in their Halo Reach disk

I think we are guinea pigs so they can actually figure out what's wrong.

  • 09.23.2010 3:56 PM PDT

Had to get out the boat so i could walk on water

So today now Fire Fight matches wont load at all, i mean to return the disk for 4th time would be waste of time because all the disks look suspect, and nobody knows whats causing this problem. So were almost up to hundred pages of thread and 2 of most generic responses have been sent, 1 turn in your xbox for repairs and 2 follow first response.

The problem with most people seems to be the Xbox! I played Reach with the same disc and hard drive on a different Xbox and it worked fine

  • 09.23.2010 4:16 PM PDT

It seems that my replacement disc is progressively decaying in quality as as first I didn't have any problems with DREs and now my first Firefight match tonight, to try and get started on the Challenges for the day, has ended with a DRE and no indication of how many credits total I earned.

Thank you, Bungie. Best thing is, I'm off tomorrow and Saturday, which means I have all the free time to call Microsoft and complain to my hearts content.

  • 09.23.2010 4:18 PM PDT

I didn't post in this thread right away when my problem happened because I could play everything in the game when I first had gotten the disc EXCEPT the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th campaign lvls. Also I couldn't play the firefight levels that Bungie ripped from those levels like the lazy pos they are.

But I figured hey it's just campaign and everyone will forget about that in a week and firefight, meh, that only seems to be for boosters.

HOWEVER. It has spread recently and has gotten worse.

Now, I get a green screen roughly every third time I start up, on top of that no matchmaking levels will load they will just say disc unreadable and freeze on that idiot black loading screen (what they were thinking is beyond me there).

I've noticed others having green screens in here.

Notes about my personal set up.

My xbox is a launch 360.
I've tried to play without HDD/Xbox Live. It doesn't work.
I've returned my reach disc... three times. All of them spotless, all of them not working.
I've laid my xbox horizontal and vertical neither fix the problem.

I know there are many out there reading this that have the same problem and don't feel like posting, PLEASE POST. I didn't post either but this problem is getting out of hand to the point that we need to let them know they can't just try to cover this up.
