This is dumb as hell, I would rather get my money back than spend the time to fix what I shouldn't have to.

After returning two discs, buying a new one from a different store, and countless fix attempts, I finally got my copy to run. Everything is not perfect, and sometimes get DRE, but have played some marathon single player/multiplayer sessions.

Considering all the random crap I did, it's hard to tell what worked (or whether something worked itself out, I have a sneaking suspicion this problem originates with Live and something may have been "fixed" without an update):

1. Disconnect HDD, disconnect from Live
2. Stand system vertical
3. Play game (this is where it worked, if not, try again?)
4. turn system off, insert HDD
5. Play game again
6. If everything is working, reconnect to Live
7. enjoy it while it lasts

EDIT: In retrospect, the HDD step may have not been an issue. Also, i installed the game as soon as I could. Damn this is confusing, this is obnoxious. @ below, yea, this should be illegal.

Tried it, didn't work. The weird part is that the last disc I had would only let me play single player if my HDD was taken out. This one one won't even load up the second level with or without the harddrive in it. I got my 360 back from repair last year November and the warranty ended in March...at least I think

I have a repaired 360 also it Rrod'ed last year. My first disc frozen and dnr a lot. I traded it for another disc that did not load or read at all. I called the store and said I wanted my original disc back. Clear the cache every time you get booted or get the DNR it helps with the play.

I am really at wits end with this issue. I want to play Reach, but I am not going to send in my console, especially for $120! How they can do this to their loyal fans and think they can get away with it is beyond me. Now that we got word out and almost every video game publication has some kind of coverage on Reach issues. I think we should seriously consider taking some kind of legal action. This is ridiculous, I didn't pay $60 for a coaster.

Last night I could run the game with much coaxing, but could only view the menus. I tried to install it and it couldn't read it all the way, and none of the maps enjoyed loading. So I shipped mine away today for a free repair :|

I would join up in a class action law suit in a millisecond. When the time I CAN'T play trumps the time I CAN play, then I know that something is very wrong and the product is a failure.

I haven't had the chance to play as much as I would like to. When I first got the game on launch day I went straight into Matchmaking. Than my internet went out and I decided to play some campaign...only to discover that I couldn't It just does not load and gives me a "Could not load because of unknown error"...First I thought it was the disk. It had a minor scratch. I cleaned and tried again, nothing.

Than I commenced to search online for anyone else having a problem and stumble upon this thread. I am not sure if I fall under the same category as the rest of you getting the DRE but I sure as hell know that this is the only game I am having issues with.

My brother just got a new Xbox slim and when I get home I am going to try the game in his system and see if I get the same results.

I love this game and I am itching to get the campaign going even though I have read almost every spoiler out there. I just want to access everything I paid for. This is getting pretty annoying as each day goes by all I hear is that I might have to send my xbox in and pay more money...

I would join a class action lawsuit, they should be held accountable! Honestly, how can Microsoft say that there are a "small number" of people experiencing issues. Common Sense, Microsoft! If you have 85 PAGES of responses on a forum directly regarding the same issue, you have a LARGE number, not small! If I don't have a software/firmware update by Friday, my local Gamestop will be getting my Halo: Reach back and they can go ask Microsoft for the $. I have a game sitting here that I can't play, what a waste!

I'm having similar problems to what others are experiencing with my system. I'm able to play through a few levels of the campaign, when out of nowhere (typically right before the end of the level, thus robbing me of co-op points) it'll crash with a DRE.

I called Microsoft earlier today, and got quoted the same $120 repair fee as others. I declined the offer, as I can't stomach spending that much money on an out-of-warranty item that'll probably get the RROD soon after, anyway.

Here's hoping they figure something out with this.

I am playing it on my 20 gb Xbox 360 Pro which is like 3 years old. I installed it on the HDD and it's working just fine. Finished the campaign and played a bunch of multiplayer games.

I hope a patch is released for you guys soon.

mine's not working too well, it only plays the bigger maps, which in my opinion, doesn't make much sense

I've played Halo: Reach when I first got it on the 18th.
Played some custom games on the 19th with my brothers, and finished the whole campaign on the 20th. In the evening on the same day during a custom game, the disc read error popped up.

I kept on getting the "Open Tray" problem but after turning my Xbox 360 vertical, the regular disc read errors popped up again. The disc would occasionally say that it is a Mixed Media Disc.

I'm using an Xbox 360 Arcade from 2009 with no HD.
I was disappointed that this problem had occured after 3 days of gameplay. I hope that this problem will be resolved soon because I have a fun time playing Slayer and Headhunter with my brothers and my friends.

@Post Above,
At least your lucky enough to play.
I wouldn't mind playing Boneyard or Forge World Maps with 4 people.

sorry to see all the new people coming to the thread...but the more numbers we have the better chance we have that we can get this fixed...my game has been sitting on the coffee table since saturday after i got tired of playing the first mission over and over hoping it would let me go to mission 2

  • 09.23.2010 6:06 PM PDT

I took reach to play at a friends house. The game played on his console perfectly with no issues for dre unlike mine and I was using my harddrive for both. Until this issue is fixed I let him borrow it(if this ever gets fixed). :(

Soul slayer Ashido

Hopefully this will be my final post in this topic. I tried playing with my Xbox vertical with the HDD in and I seem to be problem free. I waited a while before I typed this because I didn't want to jinx it. I hope you guys try all the steps that I have and hopefully you too will be able to enjoy this game.

  • 09.23.2010 7:02 PM PDT

Yeah, putting mine vertical helped too. It still occasionally messes up but I turn it off and let it sit for a while and then try and again and it's better.

  • 09.23.2010 7:04 PM PDT

I was looking at some other forums regarding this issue, one guy was saying that Microsoft are offering free repairs on launch consoles who are unable to play halo reach due too the unreadable disc error.

  • 09.23.2010 7:20 PM PDT

brought reach over to a friends who has a Elite worked perfectly.. this is bull -blam!-.. and the fact that bungie hasin't acknowledged it is even worse!

  • 09.23.2010 7:34 PM PDT

im selling reach before i wait 2 weeks for my console to be repaired. this would be my 4th time sending my xbox back bull -blam!-

  • 09.23.2010 7:36 PM PDT

Ok, so my problem is in the Campaign.

At level 5 "Tip of the Spear", after so many checkpoints, the mission restarts back at the beginning. wtf.

This is my 2nd Reach disc, b/ the first one was giving me "clean disk" problems everytime after a matchmaking match.

wtf bungie. >.<

I've been on this thread complaining for a while, but I must admit, I'm probably luckier than most of the other people here. I can get 15-20 minutes of gameplay at a time in any game mode before it crashes. That means having to save and quit every few checkpoints to make sure I dont have to start far back when the game inevitably crashes(you can imagine how that would kind of ruin the action sometimes), and that means a lot of multilayer games I've never finished........that would be all ive played if I'm right. Steadily coming up on 100 pages and the only solution is a $120 fix. The best thing we can do is complain and do our best to explain we will NOT pay money for something that should be free. Weather its complaing as much as possible to Microsoft or a class action lawsuit, I dont care as long as we can play the game we spent $60-$150 on. I've been with Bungie from the beginning, and so have a lot of other people on this thread, we just want to play Bungie's swan song to Halo. Yeah, really long post

dude,,, i actually tried that.. the save and quit method.. and this shyt sux balls.. i mean.. after i die.. the mission will restart. aaarrggh!! I've played this mission like 20 times at least just b/c if i die at a certain checkpoint it will restart.

I'm not paying shyt for shyt. I'll go right back to gamestop tomorrow and get a new disk until this is resolved and i can move on from mission 5!!. this is stupid.

right now, i'm going to try and install my game to the HDD and see if that might help, and then if that doesn't work, i'll try playing offline.

Is there a thread like this on the xbox forums?

  • 09.23.2010 8:32 PM PDT

In the United States Air Force.
If you have questions, ask.

My RROD, last game played was Reach console went from repair in progress to repair done at the same time. I call shenanigans. Not only did it not even update that it was going to repair, it was marked completed at the same time. If I have to spend any more time on the phone having to talk about this with Borat, I'm just gonna give up until Bungie, or a rep from Microsoft gives a reasonable explanation of what's happening. I want to talk to somebody in my own country damnit!
