@spartan2447!!!! you are definatly wrong about this being a useless way to fix the issue. I am currently looking at this forum for all of the ppl who have had this particular issue and i am writing their gamertag down. After I am done I am goin to contact everyone and ask them if they would like to participate in a class action lawsuit if microsoft doesn't fix/formally address the issue after the patch is released in early october.

IF MICROSOFT CONTINUES TO IGNORE THE CLEAR AND PRESENT ISSUE AFTER THE PATCH IS RELEASED YOU HAVE MY WORD THAT LEGAL ACTION WILL BE PURSUED. TRUST ME LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I AM AWARE OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU WHO HAVE POSTED ON THIS THREAD. WE WILL BE ACKNOWLEDGED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

I'm down for the suit, but I don't know what or how to do it, nor do I know if I have the time for it. If I just have to add my name to the list I can definitely do that. If I have to show up in court, I can almost assure you that I cannot do that. I have work and school n' such. But let me know what it all entails.

  • 09.25.2010 9:35 AM PDT

Bungie, can't you at least let us know your listening? It sucks being ignored and trying so hard to play your game and not getting so much as an acknowledgement. Please just give us some kind of update.

nope, getting disc read error when trying to load exodus up now, wont be buying anything that is published or owned my microsoft ever again, which isnt a lot anyway.

I'm really gambling some of the tech guys are working overtime this weekend on the problem and we get a press update by tuesdayish... As angry as I am, I realize how important it is for Bungie or MS to release information they KNOW is correct, and to ensure that it takes time testing out the problem... It may seem like awhile for us but the legal nightmare they are dealing with is probably quite big: MS, Bungie, and whoever each separately own the IP to anything involved in any process of making the disc and the console... And we all know the last thing I business likes to do is step up and say they are the ones at fault...

There are several different versions of this. Some have said that support told them that there will not be an update, Urk said that this can't be fixed by an update. Personally I feel as though they just say that to get people to shut up, I don't know who to believe anymore.

If the fix is a firmware update to the drive then this wouldn't be fixable by an XBL update. The console can't flash the drive firmware, that can only be done in the factory/repair center (or pirates with special software).

  • 09.25.2010 10:12 AM PDT

The food chain starts here, get in line.

Which is pants on head retarded because IF this is a firmware issue. How in the world did they not catch this?

I still think this is some sort of update either on the disk itself or from live, gone wrong perhaps in effort to thwart JTAGers and/or pirates, We know from history that Microsoft has a reputation for sending out not-so-good updates that cripple systems (besides the Xbox).

Obviously I'm going off on a bit of a rant here, but I'm upset because I cannot play my game without DREs, xbox support is offering a dubious solution. On top of this we are now going to pay more for Xbox Live? For what!?

I really believe Microsoft should give out some sort of reimbursement for this, be it MS points or extended live time for the game time we are missing. I do not think that is an un-reasonable request.

@InfernoDivider

My game wouldn't read at all or would be read as a DVD, so I gave your method a try. Surprisingly the box finally read it as a game instead of a DVD, however I got the dirty disk error when I tried to start it. So I got close. I ejected it and put it back in and now it's reading as a DVD again. Third time is reading it as a game but the preview pic isn't showing up so I'm assuming it's still not reading correctly. Which I can confirm. I'm thinking about boiling the disk to see if that works. I don't really have any other options anyway.

Alright, I boiled the disk, saw the oily whatever come off it, knowing the chemicals nowadays it's probably toxic. Popped in the game.

AND HOLY -blam!- -blam!- IT WORKED! I can at least make it to the main menu, I have to rush off to work now but I'll be running further tests on it later and I'll report the findings.

I suggest everyone having problems with this to try both methods (using a USB drive and boiling the disk) to make the game work. A note on the boiling part though, be extremely careful and delicate, if you so much as warp the disc slightly, it could explode in your xbox in which you would need to buy another xbox, at the least.

Well apparently because the nex xbox 360 slim uses labtop hardrives and xbox hasnt even come up with a way to transfer memory from a xbox hard drive to a lab top hard drives im -blam!-. I went out of my way to go try a new xobx slim wich isnt even garenteed to work with reach.
Truly Microsoft ive never been more disapointed with anything in my life GO -blam!- YOURSELVES

How long did it take before M$ admitted the RROD wasn't just a 'small number of people'?

How long did it take for them to fix the RRoD? Oh wait... They still haven't!!!! :o

  • 09.25.2010 11:54 AM PDT

All Bungie needs to post is "We're working on the problem" or "MS is working on the problem" or "We're both working on the problem - not sure if it's hardware or software yet, folks" and either way they need to say "We'll let you know as soon as we have something solid, sorry for your troubles."

That is BARE MINIMUM respect for your fans, and I think would cool about half the anger on display here.

Instead what do we get? Not even a mention in the weekly update. Not even a note that they're still reading this thread and staying on top of things.

Just a "Call <useless> Support"... which implies that they DO know what the problem is, and support has the answer, and they're not telling us what the problem is. We all know that support doesn't have a consistent answer.

Personally I'm lucky enough to be able to struggle through level by level, sometimes getting a DRE, sometimes not. I wouldn't even be bothering if this game wasn't so good; but it's the best single player Halo campaign I think, ever.

I haven't been able to finish the last level, though. Not sure if I'll ever be able to.

I haven't really tried multiplayer since the last problem I encountered. Just not worth it - though that weekly update sure makes it look like people are having a good time. Way to really rub it in. :)

And for those of you who didn't read the thousands of previous posts (why would you?) and plan to buy a Slim to solve all your problems; it might, but it might not.

I'm playing on an almost brand new Slim with 250GB hard drive built in. It plays every other game but this one just fine.

And YES, I did immediately install it to the hard drive. I even tried clearing almost everything off the hard drive, deleting Reach, and reinstalling it. Same problems.

Got off the phone with XBox support for a third time a few minutes ago. I told him that Bungie is saying it requires the console be sent in for repair to resolve the issue and that they should not be charging for it. The rep told me that they were told by MS to no longer offer any free repairs, only to exchange the DVD. Since I have already done that, my only remaining option is to pay $100-120 to get it repaired. I have PM'd Urk about it as he requested. We'll see if anything develops of it.

  • 09.25.2010 12:12 PM PDT

Ha, what a load of crap why cant bungie or ms be helpful?
Im having the same problem disc unreadable now and then but stil really annoying. I can't finish the campian play 5 matches without restarting the game and my xbox isnt even 1 year old come on Microsoft i thought you where better than this.

This is exactly what happened to me an hour ago. My rep did his best to be helpful (I used to work in a call center so I know) but advised me that MS had sent out a memo stating that they would not be giving out free repairs for out-of-warranty boxes experiencing this problem.

I then asked if there was a customer service specialist who could authorize it, but he said that the memo stated they could no longer escalate the problem to a CSS representative (escalation specialist, whatever). I have also PM'ed Urk and am awaiting a response.

I made sure to ask if MS is aware of what is causing the problem, he said they had not said anything about that in the memo but that it could be any of a number of things. It does seem unlikely they would have included that information in the memo as it was regarding support procedures.

yeeeeah pretty angry but I seem to have run into a new wall.

I got up today, popped in Reach like normal. Pops up as if nothings in the disk tray. Hit open, close, is says reading, then "open tray" like nothing is in. The disk does not spin (confirmed the position, and it stays in the same spot 10/10 times.

I've played reach on THIS box before. I've been playing on it. But suddenly it just wont work. So I popped in here to give my baaaaawwww story so bungie can now i r mad 2.

But in the middle of posting this, I seem to have found something lame...none of my other games, that worked last night, work either. So I GUESS I got a new problem? Sucks to be me! At least I get to suffer with you guys. ^_^

  • 09.25.2010 12:57 PM PDT

Wsup guys i just buy the new xbox slim... now everything is working perfectly... easiest way is to buy a 250 gb xbox slim... feeeling bad for all of you guys who can't buy one im playing reach FINALLY!

Hello everyone. Having a similar problem on an early X-Box 360 Elite (RROD, fixed once).

A random time into the gameplay (usually about 5-8 minutes into a match or firefight) the game freezes, but the console is still okay. I pop the disc out and it goes back to the dashboard. Installed the game and turned the console on its side, and it worked fine for about 2 hours before occuring again.

This has been happening all morning off and on, and finally I got a disc read error when I tried to load a map.

So, presumably, the problem has gotten worse over time. Since I'm not on the "typical" first gen 360, this troubles me. Couldn't afford a new 360 if my life depended on it. What now?

EDIT: I used an aerosol duster can on the disc (which is nearly immaculate since I just bought the game) and am trying again.

Ugh. I'm planning on boiling my disc to see if that works.
Anyone confirm that it works?

The kind of DRE that I'm getting is the DRE errors when you start the game from the dash board. Once you press A to play the game, the screen goes black and then gives me DRE.

When I have my xbox horizontal, then I get the Open Tray errors
When I have it vertical, It says play game and then when it starts, it gives me DRE. I have a 2009 Xbox 360 Arcade with no Hard Drive. These problems started after 3 days of my purchase.

I was able to complete the campaign, play a lot of custom games, and make a few forge maps Within the 3 days of game time. All of my other games work perfectly.

Hey guys It's been a while but that was because BUNGIE decided to slap me with a 3 day ban for my language towards others AKA... MICROSOFT AND BUNGIE... my argument was that if they had made the game properly to work I would not have had to use language like that... But because they banned me it shows to me that they are in fact looking at our posts which means that bungie are just being lazy not offering any input as to the issue at hand...

Now to write about my findings.. I got my xbox back on wednesday and put the disc in and installed it onto my hard drive... Loaded up the game and it works totally perfect, so to those who had a free repair I can suggest that you should send your xbox consoles in for repair.. to those who have been constantly told that they can't get a free repair then I suggest not to give up and keep trying and then say to whoever you talk to that you would like to talk to someone about escalating the issue and that you will be seeking legal action if the console is not repaired for free as microsoft have broken their end of the bargain by releasing a game on a console which doesn't work on it..

  • 09.25.2010 2:33 PM PDT

I feel for all of you. It will be nice if Bungie and/or Microsoft acknowledge this issue and give us a little confidence that things will be fixed. I feel like they just want to bury this problem because quite frankly, we are the minority given the amount of copies Reach as sold; not to mention the number of people who caved-in and bought a new Xbox just to play the game. They're probably just waiting for this issue to go away because sooner or later, each one of us will just "give up", meaning less posts in this thread, meaning the problem seemingly disappears in their eyes.

However, I will give Bungie credit for not locking/deleting this thread though, unlike the other threads Bungie is banning/blacklisting people when they ask for a fix/patch to the 50cR max for offline players.

  • 09.25.2010 2:45 PM PDT

After spending 500$ on a 40" LCD and 120$ on an Xbox not to mention 64$ for Reach I was excited to play it. But, like of all of you I experienced Disc is Unreadable. After THREE exchanges no effect. Always happens right after the first cut scene. I was able to load past that screen before only to have the Helicopter scene constantly loop on me. Been able to play the game intermittently on my Xbox. Here's the thing. The Xbox I bought was from a friend. 2009 Xbox Arcade. Went over to a buddies house to test out Reach on his. Works perfectly fine. His Xbox? 2005 Arcade. Wtf ftw?

  • 09.25.2010 2:50 PM PDT

Fine I give in, I'll call the damn support all because I've lost one too many Invasion matches and I want to play campaign instead of this crap also my mic is broken. If they even tell me I have to pay then screw it, I'll get a PS3 they may take a while to upload games but at least they work.

Another thing how I'm hearing people say that Urk isn't a Bungie Employee? This is what I mean, I don't know who to believe anymore since it seems like people are lying left and right on both sides. Business companies at their finest, a wolf in sheep's clothing

EDIT: The computer voice annoys me SO much....

i love when my PS3 owning friends ask "how's the new halo?" and i can only say i haven't played it yet, my xbox says the disc is unreadable...

i guess that's what i get for asking "so how many blu-rays have you watched on that thing?" then saying "yeah, that's why i bought 360. i don't watch movies, i play games..."

i am now eating those words for breakfast, lunch and dinner...

Have a fishy stick!

Sigh, I called them up today, a few days ago, and a week ago, and another time before that. No dice. They just won't give us a free repair, on the website the repair can be lowered to $99, but this just just ludicrous. I tried everything, asked to speak to the supervisor, waited 15 minutes for her to get on. The foreign accent lady that doesn't even sound like a supervisor told me the same thing as the other guys, they can't do shi about it.

We all share the pain here. I'm pretty pissed off. $60 on a game that won't even work right. The only thing we can hope for is a patch.

molon labe

I've been following the developments in this thread closely. I pre-ordered reach and it's sitting back at my house on the other side of the country waiting for me to return from a few weeks working out of state. I'm wondering whether my copy will work and debating what actions I might take should I be the recipient of the dreaded DRE.

Anyway, I thought of this - Has anyone tried emailing the Consumerist ( http://consumerist.com/ ) yet? This is right up their alley; large corporation screwing over customers. They have a pretty good track record with getting the word out and generally pwning companies that try to duck consumer responsibility. If they run a story on this, M$ will not be happy. I would recommend every person who is unhappy with the customer support received from M$'s 1-800 number (ie: paying M$ over $100 to have a perfectly fine xbox "fixed" so it will play a game) to email the consumerist.
