You don't do anything, Xbox Support hasn't done -blam!- for it except return your Xbox if you're in warranty, I might do that soon because I have 30 days to do so.

Something odd to note:

If I take out my HDD, games load fine
Put it in and they stop loading (sometimes)

Even odder: If I log into a new gamer profile, loads fine
Load into my GT: Stops loading.

And of course I have days when it loads 100% fine without errors.

Same with me, I was forging my heart out yesterday, with no problem at all, with the HDD in and online as well. However I quit that game (after saving my awesome map of course =P) and attempted to play some Multiplayer. The voting session kept on looping non stop, same as when I tried playing cutscenes in the campaign after 30 seconds of looping. Afterwards I joined a friends game, which played fine until the screen inexplicably froze.

The game has a higher chance of not failing with the internet unplugged and the HDD removed. More like 3 out of 4 times I have been able to play without those two components.

I emailed Microsoft Support. I will paste their reply here so you all can see when i get it.

I have an xbox that is not of the very first ones, but it still has no HDMI. Will I get this problem for sure or is there a chance that my disc will work perfectly fine?

  • 09.27.2010 5:02 PM PDT

It's happening to a lot of people - pretty much everyone has a 50%+ chance of it happening.

So I finally called the number and I fall into the group of where I can play for like 45 min to a hour before I get the disc error. I have one of the realease consoles with the 20 gig hardrive. So the guy I guy seemed vey nice and he had me clear the cache and check for any corrupted files which I didn't have any of. He gave me a reference number to call back with if I still had the problem and he said that it could be the disc but then I told him that it works fine with my brothers xbox. Which he replied that my discdrive might be more sensitive then his. He also told me that my disc drive could be bad or the disc drive could be getting too hot. So I m not sure what to think but I'm gonna go see if it will work now. Oh and at the end of the call he tried to convince me to buy a new xbox.

Subject: Disc Not Reading

update: Gamestop guy gave me a new disc, and I told him I already called MS. He said nobody has had this problem and doubts my disc was defective, but I persuaded him it was. First thing I did was install to HD, so now my disc is scratch free, and runs perfect.

Dunno why but no green screens or unreadable errors anymore. :D

  • 09.27.2010 5:19 PM PDT

50% plus????? that high?

  • 09.27.2010 5:53 PM PDT

I just filed a claim with the better business bureau. I suggest everyone else do the same.

  • 09.27.2010 5:56 PM PDT

I have a launch day arcade console. I had to buy a harddrive after I got it, and this is still happening to me. I called microsoft support, they told me to erase the cache/install it and it worked for a few days then started freezing again.

How did something like this get through ALPHA testing?

  • 09.27.2010 6:03 PM PDT

So far we have discovered that the problem can't be assured to be remedied in the following methods:

1. New Disc
2. Clearing your cache
3. Deleting Halo Waypoint
4. USB/HDD swap trick

???

What am I missing... It's sad that people have started boiling discs and tricking the 360s internals with a USB to get a game published by Microsoft to work...

I just got off of a microsoft support call with them telling me it "MIGHT" be a hardware issue and because my warrenty is expired by 2 years (who's isn't with first year consoles) it will cost me ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY dollars ($120) to send it in and see if they can fix it. Not including shipping of course.

Why do I feel like I just got scammed?

Don't send it in imo. Holdout for a better option. You wont regret it. To some people $120 isn't much but if you're paying off student debt its a monthly payment that could be paid off in advance (as I am doing).... Furthermore its the principle of not letting MS set this practice as precedence for future errors.

  • 09.27.2010 6:40 PM PDT

I just sent my disc in to microsoft for a swap. I'll let you guys know if the one they send back has the same problems. Here's hoping this will actually fix it.

  • 09.27.2010 6:46 PM PDT

I just got off the phone with customer support and was told by the very polite service rep that they have discovered the issue. He told me that they found a defect at one of the pressers so there are a lot of defective disks out there currently. He also mentioned that they had received "a high number" of calls regarding this issue (wouldn't be surprised if it was 50/50) and offered to send me a "known to work disc." After informing me that I would have to pay shipping he suggested that I take it back to my retailer, speak to a manager, and ensure that I get a second or third shipment copy of Halo: Reach. Hopefully everything he said was all true and not more smoke blown up our rears. I'm going to try this tomorrow, if anyone else does let me know how it goes for you.

Guys keep replying to this thread . . . sooner or later they'll have to respond with something useful.

They as in Microsoft and Bungie.

There are Indians playing reach, I'm one of them :) But I agree with you, there aren't many so it does add suspicion.

I think(hope) it's less about the nationality/race, and more about it being a call center in a seperate country than the actual company, and who really have no power or say in what happens, and only can do what they are told.

Not so much race but the fact that he has a noticeable, though not really hard to understand, Indian accent combined with the number of call centers there DOES suggest certain possibilities. Granted, he could be an Indian national living in the US but I'm guessing not.

I also have now filed with the BBB with a really long explanation of the problem with Microsoft

  • user homepage:

I called Microsoft Support two days ago, spoke to someone, explained the entire problem (Reach keeps freezing, exchanged the disc, same thing, all my other games work, Reach works on my friends elite) and she told me to pay $120 to get it sent in. So I asked to speak to her manager, explained it all to the manager, said I don't want to pay a dime for their mistake, and I got basically the same answer: pay $100 and we'll fix it. So I asked to speak to HER manager, and she told me she was the manager. So I asked to speak to someone above her and she said okay, and that I'd get a call within 24-72 hours. Yesterday I got a call from the 'Manager's Manager', explained the entire story to him, and he said that until Microsoft makes an official statement about how the game is f'ed up, he can't replace it for free. After badgering him for a while and asking to speak to his manager, he told me that if I sent in my 360 and paid the $100, and if sometime in the future Microsoft said that they -blam!- up and that there was something wrong with the game, all I'd have to do is call them and they would fully reimburse me. I'm debating about whether or not I should do this because I don't want to send it in, and then Microsoft comes out with a simple dashboard update that fixes everything (a little hopeful? maybe) and not have my xbox for another month. I'm also considering a local xbox repair shop who says they'll replace my xbox on the spot for $70... but that also involves me spending money, which I obviously don't want to do. This has been a serious screw up on microsoft's part, a screw up that must be REPAID in FULL with (their) BLOOD! HEAR THAT MICROSOFT?!?! BLOOOOOOOD!!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAH

Interesting, I hope this is what's wrong because this is a very simple fix for everyone. MS can just send us working discs.

For what it's worth I am part of the new Dashboard preview program, so I will have the new dashboard before it's released to the general public. I'm not optimistic about it making a difference when it comes to Halo Reach, but I'll definitely report back here and let you know what happens when I get it (hopefully an official fix will be issued by then, because we don't get a preview of the new dash until about 2 weeks from now).

"You could've had a V8...now it's too late!"

wait, but how do you get Microsoft to send you replacements discs? I'm going to assume you need your Gamestop, Walmart, Target (or where ever else you bought it) receipt?

So do i just call up Support and ask them?

Wow yet another person with a 360 Slim experiences the problem. You mean to tell me all this hardware is bad and it's not a problem with the code? Doesn't sound right to me.

Can someone tell me how the ODST issue was resolved (if it ever was)? The little research I did on it turned up nothing.

It was never resolved, at least not to my knowledge. The complaints eventually just "died". I suspect that's what Microsoft is trying to do here: wait it out. Maybe Bungie's like that too, although I'm a little doubtful considering how they stickied this thread and didn't lock it yet (unlike some other threads with legitimate complaints).

Thanks for answering this btw. I had a feeling it was never resolved because I do remember seeing some fairly recent complaints about it. I myself bought the game in time for Reach Beta. I installed ODST to my hard drive and I had no problem playing through the whole thing. I don't recall getting a single error.

Gee, will cussing out Microsoft get this problem fixed faster? No, I didn't think so. Try filing a BBB complaint instead, much more useful =D
