On the phone AGAIN with Microsoft about this issue, and this guy may try to get a free repair for me. But I don't really want to wait 6 weeks...that seems a bit "unreasonable" "unethical" and too long.

I just got off of a microsoft support call with them telling me it "MIGHT" be a hardware issue and because my warrenty is expired by 2 years (who's isn't with first year consoles) it will cost me ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY dollars ($120) to send it in and see if they can fix it. Not including shipping of course.

Why do I feel like I just got scammed?

Don't send it in imo. Holdout for a better option. You wont regret it. To some people $120 isn't much but if you're paying off student debt its a monthly payment that could be paid off in advance (as I am doing).... Furthermore its the principle of not letting MS set this practice as precedence for future errors.

Ok everyone We are the ones left, who did not rush out and buy a new system to play the game. I am sure many did. (sorry for those who did and still cannot play) We are the ones who cannot afford to have our consoles "fixed" "updated" or "repaired" when they play every other game and dvd we have. They don't care about us. We have to keep posting and complaining so something will get done. It is illegal and false advertising to sell something that is "not fit for the purpose intended" It breaks the warranty of merchantability. This is an implied warranty that the product is going to do what it says its going to do. This one does not say anywhere that it only plays on certain X Box systems. They are going to have to address this sooner or later. It is a bummer that Reach has to have this tainted start for all of you.

I called Microsoft Support two days ago, spoke to someone, explained the entire problem (Reach keeps freezing, exchanged the disc, same thing, all my other games work, Reach works on my friends elite) and she told me to pay $120 to get it sent in. So I asked to speak to her manager, explained it all to the manager, said I don't want to pay a dime for their mistake, and I got basically the same answer: pay $100 and we'll fix it. So I asked to speak to HER manager, and she told me she was the manager. So I asked to speak to someone above her and she said okay, and that I'd get a call within 24-72 hours. Yesterday I got a call from the 'Manager's Manager', explained the entire story to him, and he said that until Microsoft makes an official statement about how the game is f'ed up, he can't replace it for free. After badgering him for a while and asking to speak to his manager, he told me that if I sent in my 360 and paid the $100, and if sometime in the future Microsoft said that they -blam!- up and that there was something wrong with the game, all I'd have to do is call them and they would fully reimburse me. I'm debating about whether or not I should do this because I don't want to send it in, and then Microsoft comes out with a simple dashboard update that fixes everything (a little hopeful? maybe) and not have my xbox for another month. I'm also considering a local xbox repair shop who says they'll replace my xbox on the spot for $70... but that also involves me spending money, which I obviously don't want to do. This has been a serious screw up on microsoft's part, a screw up that must be REPAID in FULL with (their) BLOOD! HEAR THAT MICROSOFT?!?! BLOOOOOOOD!!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAH

Hello Microsoft remember that repair I paid for? Can you send me a check? I doubt that would ever happen.

I just got off the phone with customer support and was told by the very polite service rep that they have discovered the issue. He told me that they found a defect at one of the pressers so there are a lot of defective disks out there currently. He also mentioned that they had received "a high number" of calls regarding this issue (wouldn't be surprised if it was 50/50) and offered to send me a "known to work disc." After informing me that I would have to pay shipping he suggested that I take it back to my retailer, speak to a manager, and ensure that I get a second or third shipment copy of Halo: Reach. Hopefully everything he said was all true and not more smoke blown up our rears. I'm going to try this tomorrow, if anyone else does let me know how it goes for you.

Rather than waste ANY more time with the useless Xbox support line, I've emailed this to Amazon, where I bought the game and had it delivered on Launch Day. I'll let you know if I get any reply whatsoever. It seems more likely (to me as a consumer) that Amazon would help us than Microsoft or Bungie at this point, which is more than a little sad.
________________

Hello there, I've got a complex little problem here - I purchased a copy of the Xbox 360 game HALO: REACH from Amazon.

I am experiencing ocassional issues with the game locking up and a "Disc Read Error". This is the only game that does this on my system, and I am not alone.

Apparently MANY other customers are experiencing this problem across a wide variety of Xbox hardware systems (units purchased years ago and recently).

My Xbox is almost brand new; there is a support thread on Bungie.net - the developers of Halo: Reach that has now reached almost 100 pages of comments.

Customers are irate as their copies purchased from a variety of vendors have failed to work. So far Bungie has not provided any answers, but referred people to call Microsoft's help line.

My questions are:

#1) Are you experiencing an unusually high rate of returns for Halo: Reach? That would indicate that I'm not alone among Amazon customers with this problem.

#2) On Page 98 of this thread, and I will link you directly to that page here:

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=48970376&v iewreplies=true&postRepeater1-p=98

The user named FDRsPOLI0 writes (about halfway down that page) that he spoke with a Microsoft Phone rep who stated that there was a defect from one of the disc manufacturers. He suggested trading in that disc for a "second or third shipment" disc.

Are you aware of this as a solution? Is there any way I can do a return and get a "known to work" good disc from a good shipment? I don't want to waste my time (or Amazon's) just getting another bad disc; which is what has happened to many of the people posting on that forum.

This alleged "defect at the manufacturers" may not even be the problem; it's just an allegation made by some anonymous guy on a web forum, but he seems like a legitimate user when I looked into his profile, and the explanation is plausible.

It's far less plausible to believe that thousands of us have defective consoles that are just defective on one disc. It's more likely that we happened to receive the bad discs.

THANK YOU for your time and patience in reading this very long email.
______________________________

And what I should have added to Amazon was, "And for Pete's sake, some consumers are BOILING their game discs in hot water. Desperate people could literally harm themselves because of a lack of information from Microsoft or Bungie on this silly little matter."

And honestly, it is really silly. It's just a game. I've got a life, a job, kids, a mortgage, other hobbies. In my limited free time to game (after the wife is in bed) I've got 5 other games just sitting there that I could be playing instead... and if I was done dealing with Reach, I could be playing them. Instead I'm posting on here with all of you fine people.

Well, while we're talking to the wall that won't respond, at least the company is nice.

Cheers!

BBB is the "Better Business Bureau" and you may be able to find a form at there website here.

Google, people, google.

Also, I'll fill in what *I* know of this problem.

a) is happening with pretty much ALL Xbox's, despite claims. Mostly happening with Launch Xbox's, Xbox 360 S 4GB, and I even have it happen with my Xbox 360 S 250GB.

b) installing to hard drive does NOT work

c) removing hard drive and playing game seems to work

d) creating a new "profile", signing into that & playing the game seems to work

e) game gets too hot it start's to cause errors more often

f) I just bought my Xbox 360 S 250GB a week ago, so I was still in the "30 day return" range...when I spoke with GameStop about it, and went there to return it, they had told me of the large numbers of people calling about this very issue, but were amazed to find out I have the 250 GB Model, apparently I was the first one to have this problem with it.

g) since exchanging my xbox, I also went out and rented halo reach from blockbuster - I have YET *knock on wood* to have any problems with it. so either it was a problem with the disc or a problem with the xbox.

considering the game working with the HDD out or a different profile on, I originally thought it could be a glitch in the software, but seeing as how the problem SEEMS to be resolved (yet to try with original disc),

I recommend any of you still in warranty to exchange it immediately.

for those of you not under warranty, I'm sorry but there is nothing you can do but wait it out.

If you've been paying attention to this thread, most people post at most 2 or 3 times before stopping. And most likely, most of them are too lazy to find the BBB and writing a complaint on their own (not to mention, BBB will probably ignore complaints that go "M$ SUCKZ!!!111 I WANT 2 PLAY REACH!!!111")

What probably will help more is you give "step-by-step" instructions on how to go BBB, where they can find the form, as well as a template for a complaint to send to BBB.

Then again, at the rate the thread is going, more and more people seem to be giving up...

Yes I'm always right.

Multi-accounts are for cowards and weaklings who don't measure up to their peers.

I'm getting a similar issue except that it only happens when I try to get to certain parts of the campaign. All other things Matchmaking work perfectly (as Halo games go.) I exchanged the rental game twice. I smell a bug.

All of you in United states and Canada please go on to
www.BBB.Org File a product/advertising complaint against Microsoft I used the main office in Redmond, Wa. I searched the company with phone number we all know and love (800)4my-xbox
Please this only takes minutes. They are a member of the Better Business Bureau. This is why this company is here.

I filed a complaint online and I received an email today that they have submitted my complaint to Microsoft.

The chances of this having any real affect is slim. However, to increase odds, I recommend writing and posting a public complaint that everyone can copy and paste into their own complaint so it gets recognized more.

Supposedly, some Xbox's disc readers are more sensitive. So that defective disc might work fine in other Xbox's, but yours is too sensitive and is having a bad day with it.

From what I've seen, my guess is that the most likely culprit is really the combination of disk drives + discs. Lasers in disk drive get worn out eventually, and it seems that most of the worn out disc drives have problems reading these new dual-layered DVDs (aka older Xboxes). At the same time, disc drives with problems have been reported to work after switching for a new disk even though old disk worked on other Xboxes. So basically, some disc drives can't seem to read certain dual-layered DVDs properly.

At the same time, even the new Xbox slim has reported problems, so again, most likely disk drive can't read it properly (given how fast they pumped out the new Xbox slims for Reach, I won't be surprised if some disk drives don't work off-the-bat).

Then there's those who happened to boil the disk and it worked for them. However, this is a possible solution only for those who cannot even load the game the first time, not for those who have DRE in a middle of the game.

What about those who seemed to get it working after removing the HDD? Well, my understanding is that the read/write to the HDD is much faster than the read/write to the USB, so if it is trying to read/write to HDD, it'll spin the disk faster to preload a lot of stuff, which might cause the DRE since (again) bad disk drive and/or disk with lots of reading of the disk. But if it's to USB, it'll notice there's not much space on it (and that it's a USB), so it might not try to preload as much stuff on it, so a slower read/write, meaning it can read the disk "better". This can probably explain why those people who played the game just fine for the 1st two weeks are now experiencing issues: so much disk spinning that it's overheating the Xbox.

I'm not saying any of this is true, just trying to point out some of my observations.

Has anyone gotten the Replacement disks from support yet?

I have yet to send mine in. Welp.

  • 09.27.2010 11:46 PM PDT

I hate to break it to everyone but this is a DVD-DRIVE related problem. Your Xbox DVD-DRIVE most likely needs a fixed/new laser or the pots re calibrated.
I know this is a problem with the console because you said sometimes it says "play DVD" - Only rarely should that happen and if its happening more than once a week your Xbox is in need of repair.
Luckily though there are many tutorials on the internet that teach you how to fix this and it will be a lot cheaper, faster and effective then sending it in to Microsoft. The only problem is Xbox LIVE Terms and Conditions would consider this "moddifying" even though your just fixing but they won't be able to tell unless you told them yourself that your Xbox has been "modified". Another con is: Doing it yourself will void your warranty if you have one. But I would much rather have a void warrenty than spending lots of money on postage.
Once again - this is a problem with your Xbox 360 and not the Halo: Reach disc.
I do not in any way encourage breaking the Xbox LIVE terms of service however.

So it won't work in my xbox but i get a free repair. Sucks but not that big of deal the game works in my gf's 360. NOPE! Two weeks later and now the only thing that works is matchmaking. No Campain, no firefight, most times it says the game didn't load. 2 DRE so far.

I at least got to play through the game a few times and i love it but what now. Gotta wait 3-6 weeks for mine to come back and I kinda doubt i'm gettin two free repairs.

Guess tomorrow I get to call my indian friends 7-8 times and get told to give em $119. Can't wait.

If they're gonna put up a video of "The Fail of Reach" it should just be a faiure to load and DRE screens with hours of troubleshooting phone conversations playing in the background.

The BBB hasn't helped much really, I sent in my email 3 days ago and it wasn't until tonight I got a reply back saying that my complaint would be transferred to a different BBB place, all the way in Washington/Alaska and Oregon. I'm hoping I get a reply within the next 48 hour from them, because this is just getting out of hand.
