I don't consider this to be an acceptable solution; sending in to Microsoft an almost brand new Xbox Slim (with built in hard drive)... that makes no sense.

We bought this particular machine (our FOURTH 360 now, for the love of Pete) to replace a failing Elite.

The Xbox 360 is the "center of our digital living room" like MS wants it to be. We don't have cable for television, we have Netflix. We use it to watch movies or download movies. We use it for games. My kids use it for their games.

Sending that "center of our digital living room" away for an indeterminate amount of time to play only one (1) game [when all other games work just fine] is unacceptable without further information.

Why can't we get a straight answer here?

It's also unacceptable to ship a rather delicate console to wherever these things go; even if it's covered under warranty to fix whatever problem this Halo Reach disc seems to be the cause of - it seems likely that shipping it would just cause more problems down the road. For only (1) game, that seems a bit ridiculous.

Anyone else agree?

Everyone seems to be very quick to just blame the game its self, but if you ask me the game is fine and it has to be a problem with the console. I am thinking this because when i play my copy of Reach on my xbox i will get that error but if i take that same disk and put it in my brothers xbox it will run perfectly fine with no problems. Now i know that his xbox is slightly newer then mine and im thinking that that this problem has to come from your disk drive.

It would make no sense for the console to give you a disk read error if the problem had to do with memory on your console. Now it would make sense for it to give you that error if it was a problem with the disk drive. We all know the older xboxes have problems with heat and if the dick drive is getting too hot then the laser isnt going to work correctly and thus give you and error and over time this would end up slowly killing that disk drive. I have seen this actually happen with a few of my friends xboxes. First it one read one of their games and then another and another until they finally realize that its now the games it is just there disk drive dying. So this error has been happening for a long time now and i think everyone wants to just play the blame Bungie game but when i first got this error my first thought was that my disk drive is starting to die not that there is something wrong with the game and that is what i am sticking with unless microsoft figures out and informs us of exactly what is happening.

And to address the people who are having the problem with brand new consoles: well clearly microsoft is still putting crappy disk drives into the console.

As much as I'd hate to say it, I'm fairly certain my next purchase will be of the Sony brand. This is absolutely outrageous that Microsoft ignores it's die-hard fans for this long. Whatever the "fix" may be, from a simple firmware update to maybe some interchanging of parts, the repairs should not cost the costumer a cent! I remember way back when, I owned a PS2 and the disc drive went bad, we called Sony and was treated with the utmost repect we deserved. They were very kind and easy to talk to, no overseas garbage at that time. The shipping and ALL the repairs were FREE. FREE! You can learn something from them, Microsoft. Care for your customers and your business will run itself. Do not turn your back on us, or we'll return the favor.

I've had my console die on me 4 times. I got a new job and at first was planning on buying a new console but I figure why not instead buy a ps3. I've wanted one for a long time anyway. Why waste my money on another xbox when I already have one.

The problem is simply between the interaction of the Halo: Reach software with the Xbox 360 software. Something went wrong with either an XBL update, or something that changed in later versions of the Xbox 360. They just have to isolate that problem, and fix it, code the update, put it on a patch, send it out. Problem solved.

Ok isn't it crazy that M$ is the publisher of this game...
So many people are having this particular problem WITH THIS GAME AND THIS GAME ONLY. (which might very well be the best selling series on xbox) For the most part it isn't the disc either, cuz supposedly you can put the disc in a newer xbox and it will work fine.

Since Microsoft knows this game is so poplular it would be a great time for them to make a little bit more money off the people that are absolutly steadfast fans of this great game. A Perfect Case and Point: Look at the first page of this thread. A guy named hydroconzie dropped 90 pounds to go get an elite.

Scenario: Fans can either send in there old xbox for repairs which will cost 100$ or buy a new one. Assuming they don't want to have the same problem (having an outdated console) they will buy one of the newer versions of the 360.

Now they can either buy a pointless 4GB hardrive or a new 250GB hardrive. And to limit the choice even more there is a notable problem with reach's ability to recognize the 4GB hardrive.

People say that Microsoft didn't think anyone still had the old consoles. Thats a bunch of blaming blam cuz to really be able to use this as an excuse Microsoft would have to send you an elite xbox if you ever got your old console repaired (which most of you probably have cuz I know I have sent mine in at least 3 time)

Im so suprised I haven't seen a person post something along these lines. C'mon ppl wake up. You should know M$ is goin to get you whenever and wherever they can.

I personally don't think bungie is behind this. Cuz the publisher has the last say in things cuz they are the ones with the starting capital. HISTORY IS REAPEATING ITSELF ONCE AGAIN. Whether you played call of duty or not you probably know about the publisher of the game (Activision) and how much money they scammed eager fans by simply raising the prices on the Map Packs. You wonder why all those people quit from infinity ward? Probably cuz they saw first hand what was taking place and wanted no part of it.

Hopefully I can eat my words by the time october comes around (halo reach's first patch) but for all of you true fans that bought a new console have your reciepts at the ready and for those of you who sent your xboxs in for repairs see what type of console they send you back ;)

Hi all
I myself have been reading this forum for the last four days and my own personal symptoms of the DRE are:

Missions-Nobel actual 100%DRE
-Winter contingency 100%DRE
-Exodus 100%DRE
*I have not been able to get past Exodus(got up to it on a friends console)
Multiplayer maps-countdown 100%DRE
-forge world 25%DRE
-all others 50%DRE
Firefight Maps-Beachhead 100%DRE

the DRE percentages are only guesses for entering the game that degrade the longer the xbox has been kept running. From memory every map has had a disk read error with the most reliable map being forge world which recently(past two days) has been DREing upon map entry.
Also i would like to note that almost always there is a DRE when trying to load back to the lobby.
I have tried the usb trick that others have suggested and am sorry but it is NOT the HDD that is the problem, it is either the xbox or disk being the cause with the xbox being the most likely.
On another topic
To others who have not heard from bungie, the most probable scenario is that they are working on the problem because if this gets to the media *-blam!- will hit the fan for them on an epic scale profit-wise,* However they are probably not putting out updates to say it is there fault until they know without a doubt it is a problem they can or cannot fix to protect themselves from lawsuit.
If Bungie put out an update saying that they know they did wrong it opens them to fraud because the game does not do what it is supposed to(xbox game runs on xbox right?). there is also the possibility of corporate fraud because xbox owners are being charged $100 to have otherwise functioning consoles fixed.

Hope my post helped.
Please query anything you are unsure about.

lol thats well put.

I still encourage you guys to try a fix that has been proven to work (a little anyway)

Remove your hard drive, put in a usb stick. Start the xbox, recover your gamertag, install the xbox live update when it promps you, try playing the game with just the flash drive. REMOVING THE HARD DRIVE ALONE DOES NOTHING

as much as i hate to admit it, this does seem to be a temporary fix. although it won't let me play firefight because it gives me the error saying 'one or more players doesn't have the hard drive for this map type'

EDIT: and the DREs happen still, just not near as often

Soul slayer Ashido

One more day until the next weekly update, if nothing is shown tomorrow, then I'm returning the game and will purchase it again when everything is sorted out.

Edit: Trying the smaller things, placed my 360 vertical with flash drive and has played 2 matchmaking games so far.

Edit2: Was able to play 3 more games of arena and get a rank for today, also was able to beat Tip of the Spear on Legendary without any problems. Now I'm going to do New Alexandria.

I Agree!!!!
Hi all I have been lurking here since the game came out. This above is Me. I bought my son who is a huge halo fan the Legendary edition. It all he wanted for his birthday. I went to gamestop every pay day and paid my hard earned money. BAD ECONOMY and all. Now this game barely works HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
We use our "old" 360 pro 20 hhd as our entire entertainment system also. I cannot afford to purchase a new game system every 3 years can you? I find it poor business practice and very corrupt to assume we will upgrade or be forced to. Do they understand the Value of our dollar these days?

MS just received my console. I dropped it off at UPS last friday. Hopefully it'll be shipped back to me soon.

Very likely they might not fix your one, instead they might send a new one as they've done before with others.

Thats sucks Madmom :( Even though I have DRE's as well I feel bad for you in your situation and agree with you about how they dont understand our value of our dollar. I miss the days back when the n64 came out. Hell I played that console for so many years and after all these years it still plays just fine with no problems(except blowing into the game cartidges sometimes). Now we have consoles that break in under a year or two, and eventually when we are not covered by our warrenty, we have to give more of our hard money to these companies because of these flaws.

I think this problem has nothing to do with the actual system. I work at a game retailer and at one store we had 40 returns (effing 40!), but at one down the street they have not had one. This is clearly a major manufacturing problem and nothing to do with the machines.

Its been stated atleast 8 times before that ''faulty'' (wich they are not) CDs that do not run on a console run perfeclty on other consoles.

  • 09.23.2010 10:20 AM PDT

I called xbox support 2 days ago. We cleared cache, still dre's. took out the hdd, didnt get dre but the game did freeze. then installed, this seemed to work for a little while. but started to get dres in the usual areas, in addition the game would sometimes have a green screen upon loading which didnt happen before install.

interestingly enough i was playing last night(or trying to anyway) i was getting dres like usual. so i restart my xbox(for like the seventh time that day) and suddenly no dres, checkpoints loaded up normally, no looping cutscenes, i was finally able to pass the first campain mission. was able to enter and 'exit' online multiplayer with no dre.

i was happy...and confused. what happened? did it just fix itself? guess i will see when i play tonight.

Uhm, my disc doesn't read on ANY console, but my buddys DVD works fine on mine. How about an official response. Just tell us what the heck is going on. "A small number of users report an error" is not a good response. As far as we all know, Microsoft sprinkles magic pixie dust on our consoles we are sending in. Just put our minds at ease, come on, we've had enough smoke and mirrors.

After getting several dre when exiting lobbies post match, I decided to install the game to the hard drive. Guess what, dre still, this certainly must be some kind of software bug

  • 09.23.2010 11:39 AM PDT

Can any one tell me which version of the Xbox will work with Halo Reach, Can i use either xbox 360 250gb hd or the xbox 360 4gb and can you add a hard drive to the 4gb version.
Thanks if you can help

  • 09.23.2010 12:00 PM PDT

This is ridiculous. I've had the same DRE problem since I purchased the game at the midnight release. I stood outside gamestop for 2 hours only to return to a game that I was unable to play. Every now and then I get lucky and the DRE doesn't appear for 15 minutes to an hour at max, but never fear it always errors at some point.

I too just got off the phone with Microsoft Xbox Support at 1-800-4MY-XBOX and went through the steps I had already attempted from their support website, only for the assistant to regrettably inform me that I needed to send it in for repair. Not only that, but to send it in for repair would cost me $119.00 since I am no longer under warranty. I told him how disgusted I was with this, as well as how many other people are having this same issue. All that he could do was to tell me to return the game or wait for an xbox live update which from my understanding may not even fix the problem.

Now I don't live and die by video games, but if I purchase something for $60 that is advertised to work "on all xbox 360's" I expect deliverance on that promise. All of my other games work with no problems, and my halo reach disc works on all of my friends xbox's (with the exception of one who is having the same DRE as we all are). I guess there really isn't that much to do at this point but cross my fingers and hope the update fixes the bug, or go return my game for $45 and be out $15 for no reason.

  • 09.23.2010 12:05 PM PDT

Urk! Why are we now apparently being charged to have our consoles fixed. I have to say this is one of the biggest video game cluster-blam!-s in recent memory
