But when traveling in space don't you want to get to where you want as fast as possible?
The best way to do that is by keeping the engines on and keep accelerating.

What do the unsc ships run on anyway, isn't it like a nuclear reactor or something, i can't remember

They use a fusion reactor.

Why not just stop building as many assault ships and make more orbital MACS. And a warthog chain gun that fires sniper rifle rounds.

lol sniper rounds from a warthog, i'd love to see someone try to aim their sniper rifle stationary gun from a warthog getting blasted and bouncing around on all those hills
Lol okay i'm a dumbass now that i have re-read your post firing those rounds would make sense my bad, good idea, sorry, Firing rounds that fast that quickly is the only thing that doesn't sound right, perhaps in another millenia

What good does a orbital MAC do when you want to assult a enemy fleet in another system?

First off sure our human technology maynot be as good as the covenents but their technology isn't thiers it the tecnoloy of all the other races they have killed. They have a hard time making thier own technology, but humans they make thier own. Also if you read the books you'll find that the humans made a weapon more powerful than any weapon the covenate has ever seen. THey talk about the (planet buster's in first strike) And these weapons can take out planets or hundreds of covenant ships. The armor on the Hunters shields is the same armor on the covenants battle ships it still is volnerable to plasma but resistant to human rifle fire. Also cortana improved the covenant weaops just with a few seconds of looking at them which shows that he covenant arn't as smart as you think.

You do not decelerate in space: there is no air resistance. Thus, once the engine reaches maximum power, and the ships mass is at full velocity, the engines can be cut (but not he reactor, obviously), and the speed will remain the same.

didn't they send one of those planet busters into space with the chief or on some ship that ran away? and is it just me or does plasma still bounce off the hunters shields

That is not totaly true Goldfish.
You still deccelerate but it isn't noticable. And you can keep accelerating all the time.

isn't speed constant in space or don't you keep on picking up speed, i thought the only way to slow down was to reverse thrust

no the covenant attacked reach before the weapons left. so the admiral armed them to destroy reach and whatever covenant were in the area. but they know how to make them now and those things are going to rock the covanent

The speed isn't constant but it will take some time to slow down. That's why you can keep on accelerating.

and in the game the plasma bounces off eht shields but in the book it tells how the covenant shoot at a hunter who shot at something they didn't wan to be shot and they melted him even though he had his shield raised blocking himself fomr thier shots

You can only accerlerate as much as you engine will allow: there will inevitably be a limit, and I will not even attempt the "What happens above the speed of light" argument that may come as a result.

The reasons for deceleration are: friction, gravity, air resistance, etc: thus, gravity from objects with large masses or gravitational pulls (such as planets, for instance) is the only thing that could really cause deceleration.

O yea when they shooting into chief and the other spartans cuz they had the key of light, gee I don't know i'd say thats something bungie people would have to fix.

I agree with Goldfish, space is a vaccum, and the only gravity in space is that that is caused by the rotation of planets, but even the depths of space decleration is not possible

Yes and that is why the planned satelite to be sent to Mercury is going to go on a detour to get the speed down to be able to stay on orbit and not just go past Mercury.

There still are particles in space and if you didn't know there is a thing called solar wind that comes from every sun.

Uzza- i dont see how you point proves your argument. The satellite needs to slow down: its speed is constant, and will not drop unless it is dropped by reverse thrust or the gravitational pull of planet-mass.

edit: to clairfy, this was written after Uzza's previous post, not the post containing information on Solar Wind.

In every solar system a sun ejects plasma fromt it's corona (solar wind). The closer to the sun you get the more dense is it.
And thats why the satelite must go un a orbit around mercury and the sun and slowly closing the distance. NASA would have use thrusters as brakes but the amount of fuel needed to slow it down was too much.

Saw you edit after i posted. But this still clarify more.

The solar wind (and general particles, for that matter) will not affect the speed of travelling masses through space (by anything more than a theoretically unmeasurable and thus relatively insignificant degree) unless the travelling mass is close to the solar winds source: at which point, the deceleration caused by the solar wind is irrelevevant compared to the deceleration caused by the gravity of the star.

the rotation of the planets has no effect on gravity, only the size of the object does. my watch has a gravity of its own, but since my watch has a very small mass, the gravity is very very close to nothing.
