The Diving Pirates will surface!

This is a thread for the sole purpose of discovering the secrets behind the bobs, buttons, and data pads. We are currently looking for Bobs. All the information here is related to the secrets in the game that once accessed don't preform any action at all. Such as collecting Data pads, they do not give any type of reward currently. The Bobs are a special Golden Ranger Elite that are possibly the most cowardly elite to disappear before death. Killing one will earn you a medal and the possibility of a reward.

WARNING: The following thread discusses the locations and possibilities of the secrets in the campaign and spoilers can be mentioned when describing a location. So go play the campaign before coming here.

FOR THE SAKE OF BUNGIE SECRETS, PLEASE HELP KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE. ^_^

FINAL OP UPDATE:
WE HAVE A NEW HOME! Reach Secrets Join the new group if you are a great member of this thread and wish to continue hunting for everything Bungie has hidden!

Bob locations discovered by us:

Invisible Elite at the begining of the Winter Contigency level is not a Bob. That elite is related only to the data pads and killing it doesn't count as a bob. Please stop posting about because at this point, its existance is very clear. The Invisible Elite from this point will be Bill because it has a relation only to the Data Pads and not to the Bobs.

Winter Contingency: A bob was discovered in the house with the data pad on the ground. this is when heat signatures are detected and an elite with a concussion rifle comes out. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=745712 &player=Apollo312 - Thx Apollo312

Winter Contingency: In the first major abandon settlement lies a bob. Could possibly be the same one as before? http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=748451 &player=thedryness - Thx thedryness

Winter Contingency: In the Second major abandon settelement is this bob. 3 bobs in one mission? http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=748584 &player=thedryness - Thx thedryness

ONI Sword Base: The ONI Sword Base bob is more like a wannabe because it doesn't sport the correct armor instead wearing White Officer armor but still gives the medal. This Bob has been confirmed to wear different suits of armor but is always white. He tends to appear after you return or he will be inside the building. Current pictures of Bob wannabe. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=750780

Tip of the Spear: By the first Anti-Air Artillery on the path going upward by the edge. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=732771 &player=Spartanic Ghost - Discovered by Spartanic Ghost

Tip of the Spear: Between the rocks on the way to Spire. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=743128 &player=Apollo312 That is 2 bobs on Tip of the Spear now! - Thx to Apollo312

ONI Sword Base: At Least 2 Bobs. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/GameStats.aspx?gameid=40838 10&player=Sspartan 122 Look at his enemies list near the bottom. There are atleast 2 bobs on that mission. - Najar

Nightfall: This bob is hanging out by the powerhouse. Someone kill him! http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=748990 &player=Spjuv3rn - Thx Spjuv3rn

Long Night of Solace: On Legendary, a Bob was discovered piloting the ship in the control room. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=744403 &player=Pistolwhip00 -Thx to Pistolwhip00

The Package was discovered to have a bob in the courtyard near where ONI Sword Base began. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=749458 &player=Shortest%20Hill - Thx Shortest Hill

The Package: Another one found underground in the Glacier map part. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=101718 5&player=Dark Sajon Discovered by Dark Sajon

Pillar of Autumn: This Bob is right where it was said to be. In teh Garage the tank spawns in on the invasion map Boneyard. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=141755 0&player=Spartanic%20Ghost - Confirmed by Spartanic Ghost

Lone Wolf: First discovered and REPORTED by Caboose, is an agressive Bob. Possibly the first. http://www.bungie.net/stats/reach/filedetails.aspx?fid=923622 &player=Pvt+J+Cab00se - Pvt J CabOOse

Bob Location Information: It appears there is only 1 bob per level and depending on the dificulty, they will spawn in different locations. I will no longer post pictures of bobs in missions where we already discovered them and will only post new pics of previous missions if it is a new location. We have found Bobs in almost every mission and we are just missing a few more.

So, I guess I'll break down what we have.

Mission 2: Bob in the building with a Plasma repeater

Mission 3: Fake Bob Near/In Sword Base (return trip) with Duel Plasma Rifles

Mission 4: Bob on top of powerhouse with a Plasma rifle

Mission 5 [A]: Bob on the Hill with a Concussion rifle
[B]: Bob amongst the rocks with a Fuel Rod Gun

Mission 6: Bob at the controls of the Bridge

Mission 7: ???

Mission 8: ???

Mission 9: Bob in front of a door, across from Sword Base, to the left when leaving the Garage

Mission 10: After Rally point Alpha, Bob is in the garage inside the right entrance of the base with Data Pad #9 inside

Lone Wolf: ???

So, looks like we have found ourselves 7 TRUE BOBs and 1 Wannabe/Poser BOB

To report a bob, post a screenshot showing its location and what mission it was.

Switches:
Tribute Room Switch
Rave Songs
Mystery Switch
ONI Sword Base Switch: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=912047 &player=b71nKy - Reported by Whatahead
ONI Sword Base Switch #2: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=911997 &player=b71nKy - Reported by Whatahead
ONI Sword Base: The uses for the 2 switches are that when pressed at the same time by two players will be teleported to the entrance and given to Gauss Hogs. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=121088 4&player=HB Prophet666

Bob Kill Squad: We are assembling a Bob kill squad to kill all the bobs once they are all discovered. 4 people will team up on Legendary to play the entire campaign. Obtaining the data pads is also required in case the two side missions work together.
1) Spartanic Ghost
2) Pistolwhip00
3) Dranlo
4) Shortest Hill
VOULNTEERS FILLED

Legendary Ending: Confirmed in the Legendary Edition Campaign Commentary part of the Legendary Ending. Confirmed by Bungie is that an Eagle will land on your helmet at the end. There is no other information on what the rest of the Legendary Ending is.

The Diving Pirates will surface!

Other Theories:

White Floppy proposes that hitting the switches may release the Bobs. The counter to this is that the bobs are seen even without hitting the switches.

A popular theory is that collecting all the data pads, killing all the bobs, and possibly pushing all the switches will unlock the Legendary ending. Either that or playing mythic dificulty will unlock it.

Random Easter Eggs:
Master Chief Cameo
Crazy Marine

I'll make a list for everyone, so we can all stop confusing each other.

FACTS:

-BOB can appear on any difficulty, but seems to prefer Normal and Heroic, for whatever reason.

-Most BOBs are only semi-hostile

-Most levels contain 1-2 BOBs. 2 Being the Maximum.

-BOBs can be found in Co-op.

-Most BOBs will despawn anywhere from 25 seconds to little over a minute.

-BOBs Almost always Spawn on Checkpoints

-The Spec-Ops Elite with the data pad on Winter Contingency is NOT a BOB.

-The BOB on Lone Wolf will -blam!- your face if you are not cautious.

M2 Winter Contingency: 1 BOB (Possible 2). Spawns with Concussion Rifle. Many different Spawn locations. See Page 18 of this thread on my post of his many spawns. (There have been reports of a BOB Spawning with A Plasma Repeater, though this requires further investigation, until we can prove BOTH will spawn while playing through the level)

M3 ONI Swordbase: 1 Fake BOB. 2 Spawn locations. This Elite will Spawn as either a White Spec-Ops, or a White Officer Elite, Duel-Weilding Plasma Rifles. Will Spawn in the courtyard of Swordbase, or near the top level inside Swordbase. He is Not an Official BOB, however he is counted as one.

M4 Nightfall: 1 BOB. Spawns with Plasma Rifle. Seems to be able to Spawn on any of the Buildings throughout the level, but almost always spawns ON a building. (Needs more evidence, and more investigation)

M5 Tip of the Spear: 1 BOB (possible 2).First Spawns with Concussion Rifle, Second Spawns with Fuel Rod Gun. The First Spawns on the short hill right after getting the Rocket hog, and right before the AA gun. Very easy find. The Second, supposedly spawns in the rocks on the way towards the Spire, it is unknown if he lasts long enough to be killed by any means other than the Falcon turret, but if so, would seem rather difficult. This also needs investigation. More pictures of the Fuel Rod BOB would be great. More evidence proving his exact spawn location would be better. Evidence proving or disproving the spawning of both BOBs in the same level, would be absolutely ideal.

M6 Long Night of Solice: 1 BOB. Spawns with Concussion Rifle. Spawns in the Bridge. Pretty Straight-foreward.

M7 Exodus: 0 BOBs. There are no Elites in this level at all What-so-ever. Finding a BOB is doubtful.

M8 New Alexandria: 0 BOBs (so far). This Level is so vast there are many locations, and even more importantly, many timeframes & checkpoint activations. Finding any here, would take forever. Heres to hoping some brave souls decide to comb through this level, until we can confirm or deny the existance of any BOBs.

M9 The Package: 1 BOB (2 Possible). Spawns with Concussion Rifle. The first Spawns after Rally point Alpha, hang left, and go up the ramp, to meet him, and a squad of Jackals. The second, whether that be second BOB, or second spawn location for the first, Spawns after Rally point Bravo. We have pictures to confirm that he does indeed spawn, but nothing more than that. Further investigation required to prove exact Spawn location, and Checkpoint activation, that this "Second BOB" Spawns on. Also further investigation to see if the two BOBs of this level, will BOTH Spawn. If So, we know it is possible for 2 BOBs to Spawn on one level, and tus can finally confirm that 2 BOBs can indeed exist on the same level.

M10 Piller of Autumn: 1 BOB. Spawns With Concussion Rifle. This BOB Spawns after Rally point Alpha, in the garage where the Scorpion would Spawn, were you playing Invasion on Boneyard. Pretty Simple.

M11 Lone Wolf: 1 BOB. Spawns with Energy Sword. This Bob typically spawns some time after 7 minutes. More investigation is required to determine Spawn time to Difficulty, that being what time he spawns, in accordance to what difficulty the game is set to.

And thats it folks. So start investigating the things that need ivestigated, and hopefully we can get some of this stuff cleared up, so that we can further proceed with our hunt.

Good thread. I've killed a couple of Bobs. Could be evolved around the Weekly challenges. As for the buttons tho.. I'm now on a out of bounds hunt :)

Dedicated driver.

My guess is that there's one BOB on each map, make a list of all the maps and a brief description of where to find the BOB and maybe a hyper-link. Put a question-mark on the maps on which a BOB hasn't been found yet.

Just a fun little conclusion I drew: The Committee of Minds for Security from the datapads were the ones who made obvious to Dr. Halsey to recreate the ORION Program(Now known as the S-II program). Sources: Dr. Halsey's journal, Data pad 5.

Just checked, i've played it 3 times, but indeed, there COULD be two "Bobs" in that mission. Sorry for the mistake.

No, you were correct. Your mission status shows 2 Bobs killed on the same mission.

  • 09.17.2010 1:14 AM PDT

thank god... back to searching every level

  • 09.17.2010 1:14 AM PDT

I posted this in the other thread but ignore it.

Does anyone know where any of the other switches are? Or do they know what they do?

We could get four people, spread three of them around the area by the switch(in bounds), get the fourth person to activate the switch, then the other three start looking for things that change.

Then replay the part over in Theater and try to find something there.

If nothing turns up then I say ditch the Bob theory and go with the switches. If they dont activate anything during the Campaign then I would bet that they alone would activate an alternate ending.

And I couldnt watch the video. Does it say its a legendary ending.. Or an alternate ending?

  • 09.17.2010 1:15 AM PDT

thats a good solution but the bob thing is here to stay they have to have some purpose

He could have killed him, died, restarted the checkpoint, and then killed him again.

There is one switch on the level "The package", it opens the door to Halsey's Lab.

Okay then.

I checked my kills(I think they were mine) and it says I have killed two. I dont recall it though.

Can someone tell me how to check heat maps for Campaign? Or how to check what mission I killed them in?

He said Legendary Ending. So far there are 4 switches. 3 of them go to easter eggs such as the Rave music on New Alexandria having 2 switches and 1 on The Package to open a door to the tribute room. The fourth has no use yet.

That is a good point but we dont know if deaths count previous kills or if the enemies you killed previously still count.

  • 09.17.2010 1:20 AM PDT

It was planned that you would read this signature at this very moment.

I have killed two Bobs in the Fifth and one in the sixth mission (on legendary). I believe that I killed the same Bob twice in the same mission. I still have this playthroughs saved so I can make research if you want.
