WTF is a Bob?

  • 09.20.2010 3:04 PM PDT

A bob is normally a god ranger class elite, what makes most of them different is that they will run away and throw grenades / hit you with their weapons, but again this is most, some bobs will shoot at you but have the armor but what classify them as bobs are the medal you get and when you look at the carnage count they are listed as a separate class of elite. BoB stands for born on board a marathon reference. On a side note... if bobs just cant shoot, why is it weird that the lone wolves bob is trying to slash you with a sword, in all honesty it makes sense that this bob will charge at you because he has a weapon that can kill you, also isn't the original picture of this bob on an easy mode.

How about PUNCHING the switch on The Package? Since the BOBs seem to be a reference to Marathon, I remembered the original Vidmasters thing. To Never Ever Leave ANY BOB's alive, and to punch all switches. Maybe that has some bearing here? Namely killing all the BOB's and punching that mysterious switch. It's worth a try, though.

Yeah, I've tried this. No results.

I'm still playing through The Package to see if I can figure it out. I'll keep you guys updated.

The Sausage King of Chicago.

What is the point? of killing these BoBs, pushing these switches, and collecting these Data Pads.

  • 09.20.2010 3:39 PM PDT

Alright, questions like this can be answered just by looking through the thread, like who is bob, and why, in fact I believe both these questions are answered on the first or second pages. I am not trolling, but half of this forum are questions such as this.

Not sure yet...that is what the thread is kind of about.

I will probably offend you

So to answer all of these questions about BOB's supposed pacifism, he is like any other creature really.

He defends himself, when he feels he is threatened

or he runs away. lol.

Also, on a side note, I'm fairly certain the BOB on Winter Contingency has the most possible spawn locations.

I have seen him spawn In the base with the overhead pass, I have seen him spawn next to the data pad, I have seen him spawn while sprinting down the road towards the Base where you get the distress call from the marines, I have seen him spawn on top of that same base, in that same base, and right outside that same base, I have seen him spawn running up the hill leaving that base, and finally I have seen him spawn with the group of Skirmishers at the top of that hill, right before reaching the base of marines.

BOB of Winter Contigency certainly gets around, but never once have I seen more than one. I'm fairly certain we can debunk the theory of more than one BOB on Winter Contigency, and instead refer to him as "The Well Traveled BOB"

i found some data pads already too, like 3, by myself

There might be a reference to seven somewhere in this (Possibly seven hidden switches/Bobs?). just a thought.

I screwed around in The Package today. I only found one thing of note that lead to little progress. I notices after I destroyed the AA guns that the marines like to go bat-blam!- and start shooting at the tops of the AA guns, even after they're "dead". I then discovered that you can actually climb a decent ways up it. If you go to the top level from the inside, you can jump on the bumps jutting out of the supports, and jump your way up to the next platform. I tried looking around up there before I destroyed them, after, pre-button, and post-button. Found nothing.

Also noted that you cannot plasma-pistol the falcons to the ground, and you can't hijack banshees in this level.

I'm always on board with this idea, as bungie loves the 7 stuff.

So far we've found...6 buttons? 2 on the package, 2 on ONI base, and 2 on New Alexandria.

And have we found 7 bobs? I thought we found more than that.

Has anyone thoroughly explored the exodus maps wit the jet pack and new Alexandria? There were a lot of "empty looking" places that I found while exploring without leaving the confines of the map. I'll check for bobs,

Since difficulty affects the appearance of bobs, skulls may too :(

I was looking in exodus earlier today but, I failed to find a bob or a switch, though if there is a switch in there I'm fairly certain that it would do something with the many elevators that open but have nothing in them. though I found one elevator door that will not open, maybe the switch opens it?

I make a legitimate thread on the most logical choice for the next Bond actor, and you take that away from me by creating a parody thread indirectly connecting my thread to yours.

I hope your kids have bad influences and develop bad personalities. I wish this with all my heart.

This has probably been mentioned, but just in case it hasn't, here goes.

"BoB's" are characters in the Marathon Trilogy, which most if not all of you should know was made by Bungie back in the 90's.

"BoB" stands for "Born on Board." Aptly named, these humans were born on board of human ships, having spent most if not all of their life in space. They are the only real human ally you ever have throughout the game, as they will occasionally teleport down to help you fight, always wielding only jumpsuits and pistols.

However, they also have a much more sinister purpose. The P'for (alliance of aliens with superior tech left behind by a long vanished alien race....sound familiar?) have a practice of capturing BoB's and turning them into Cybernetic walking bombs. They will run at you shouting lines of dialogue usually asking for help (as well as the infamous "Frog Blast the Vent Core" line) and will blow up as soon as they get close, dealing massive damage. They even show up as friendlies on your motion tracker; the only real difference is that they bleed yellow blood and blow up upon death. What this basically means is that you should kill every BoB you see. Hey, free pistol ammo.

Considering the massive role these enemies played in a game that was also made by Bungie, and the fact that there's just something fishy about these elites, I think it's safe to say that some answers can be found within the Marathon Universe.

It's obvious we have to kill them... it's what you had to do on Marathon Vidmasters, it's what you got to do here.

  • 09.20.2010 6:19 PM PDT

Any luck with the legendary ending?

  • 09.20.2010 6:51 PM PDT

Im now scouring the journal and legendary extras to find clues as to what to do. I believe Bungie has given us everything we need, just peices lying on the floor waiting to be assembled.

On an unrelated note-

*Spoiler Alert*
Miranda is Halsey's Daughter - no more speculation.

I wonder why he posted it there and not in a bigger thread.
