That mystery switch activates another switch near the beginning of the level. Here's a tutorial, it will be brief
Requirements: +2 players
For starters, eliminate all enemies up to the floating platform, but do not provoke the large convenant forces behind the rocks. Have one player ready to approach said switch that is out of bounds.
Player two should run back to the beginning. There is a building with a large crate infront of it (it's the last one in the direction you have to travel, by the hovering platform.) Push the box out of the way and stand slightly back so you can see a bit of the wall.
Player one should activate the switch.
Now Player two should see a switch infront of them. Hit it fast because it will disappear in a few seconds (player one cannot make it back in time, even with help from a ghost)
On the other building, if you go to the roof, you will see four newly spawned banshees.
The banshees can be used for offensive purposes, but as far as I can tell, it breaks the game. You cannot get into sword base after flying one of them, and I'm not sure if you can after activating the second switch. However, they do let you fly all around the map, behind sword base, and even up the mountains in the background (which seems to take forever to get high up and you will fall through them and die if you leave your banshee).
Seeing as how it breaks the game though, I dont think it can (or should) be used during the campaign run through, only for fun and passing the time.
I hope this is helpful and I'm not repeating what someone in this thread has already said (I cant read 70+ pages without playing Reach)
