I know he said he expected people to be complaining about the Theater, but my mind is just blown. Partly because no one seems to care (I can't believe I'm the only person who has friends who enjoy reviewing films), but mostly because it invalidates a feature almost completely. Reach might as well not have a theater now for me (and apparently only me). I will literally never use the theater now, and that makes me super depressed, because it used to be an awesome feature.
Look, guys, you can throw down some excuses about Theater not being worth the effort, but I'd love to see the actual statistics that justify the decision. I know you never release that information, but it's mind-boggling that I and my friends are so alone on this. The fact of the matter is that you committed a mortal software-development sin: you reduced functionality on existing features. Was the experience suboptimal? Yes. But do you know what the solution to that is? Fixing it. What you guys did was make it worse and call it better. The other option is to just leave it alone. Acknowledge that it has problems and that you'd love to have done something about them, but time constraints meant that Theater didn't see any significant improvement because other features took precedence. I can accept that, when you don't make the feature worse.
If you wanted to serve your guests 10 cookies, and only managed to bake 9, you don't take three cookies away while adding more chocolate chips. Now you still only have 6 cookies, and it sucks. There's more chocolate, so that's cool I guess, but that's considerably less cookie, and inherently less satisfying. And yes, I'd rate the ability to watch films with my friends as at least 1/3 of the Theater experience. With how slow the upload/download system is on the File Share, it's a god damn egregious task to show somebody something cool that happened while they were at work/watching their kids/getting on with their lives/otherwise unable to play Halo with me.
Honestly, it's really sad. I just assumed it was patchable and would be patched, but this update reads like a definitive "Nope, sorry, what's fun for you isn't widely fun enough to the rest of the world, so you're -blam!-. We create a billion permutations on a hundred different scenarios for everyone else to satisfy themselves, but you, Sean, your niche interest was just a little less important than Forge Art. Sorry, compadre. We'll hit you up next ti-oh, right, we're done. Ok, well, our bad."
