Honor Light Your Way, Our Blood Shall Forge a Thousand Generations!

One: Just Another PT Run

When you're out on the field, it's like nothing you've ever experienced before. I was scared when I heard about the Covenant threat. I was scared when I was drafted into the UNSC. Then, I was just terrified. Sitting in that foxhole, the only thing that my body could even manage to do was shake and tremble. I was a coward. I knew that, and I didn't deny it. But at the time, being a coward felt a hell of a lot better than not being one.

Closing my eyes tight, waiting--no, praying that death would soon take me--I waited for the inevitable. Plasma filled the air around me, mixed with an orchestra of crying and screaming. The sounds of death. Trying to shut off my ears, I threw down my MA5B rifle and covered them with a futile effort, digging my chin into my chest.

Without even knowing it, I started mumbling sub-consciously. "W-when I d-die, please bury me deep. Place an MA5 down by m-my feet." I whimpered as an explosion sounded nearby, followed by a close thud. Opening my eyes slightly, I looked up just in time to spot the freshly killed corpse not even three feet ahead of me. This only drove me to mumble more frantically. "D-don't cry for me, don't sh-shed no tear," I continued. "Just pack my box with PT gear--!"

A rough hand caught me by the shoulder and hauled me up. My eyes remained close, as I felt the end coming. I waited for my captor, who I guessed to be an elite, to run me through with that searing-hot plasma sword of his. But it never came. Instead, I was greeted with something else entirely. A familiar voice. "Get your ass up and moving, private! We are leaving!"

The hand let its hold on me slip and I opened my eyes just in time to catch Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Shoemaker fleeing in the opposite direction. Out of curiousity more than anything else, I glanced about the bloodied battlefield (littered with the blood of allies more than the blood of enemies) to see just how many of the Company was left. In my quick assassment, I counted ten, maybe twelve men. All fleeing for their lives as the oncoming plasma rushed up to greet them.

Ducking, I managed to dodge a bolt of super-heated energy as I entered the temporary safety of the foxhole once again. Reclaiming my rifle, I vaulted over the edge and out of the makeshift haven before scrambling to my feet and catching up to the Sergeant pretty quickly. "S-Sergeant!" I stuttered, looking over my shoulder. "We're screwed, aren't we?"

We had to have been! There were tons of them, and more incoming. They chased us as we ran, the superior Elites pushing the smaller Grunts out of the way to claim what kills they could for their own. Though I was trembling, somehow, my legs managed to press on. Looking back to the Sergeant, I saw his jaw tighten as he gritted his teeth. I was right, and even he knew it. He didn't reply.

Looking ahead again, static filled the COMs and I brought my hand up to my earpiece so I could listen more clearly. ". . . all remaining forces of Dog Company, come in. This is Longsword squadrant Echo Charlie. Do you read? Over."

Sergeant, being the highest ranking soldier within our limited numbers was the first and only to answer. "This is Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Shoemaker, we read you loud and clear. Over."

There was a brief pause and I took the time to glance over my shoulder again, watching as another fellow marine fell victim to the super-heated plasma, crashing to the ground with not even a yelp or sign or resistance. Frowning deeply, I looked back to the Sergeant and the voice on the opposite end of the COMs continued. "We're closing in on your position from the southwest, and we're packing heat. Be advised, we are rolling out the carpet on the enemies in your location. Danger close. How copy? Over."

My heart skipped a beat. The information was both good and bad. Good, obviously, because it'd get the Covenant off of our asses. Bad, because of the fact that it was danger close. I swallowed.

"Roger that, solid copy on all. Out." The Sergeant looked over his shoulder to spot the incoming Longsword squadrant which, sure enough, was en route. He then refocused his gaze on the remaining ten of us before holding up a fist, signaling for us to stop. Following my superior's orders, I skid to a halt. "Marines--down!" he commanded.

Immediately, some of us dropped, though a few of us remained standing for a moment. I was a part of the latter. After a screech from the Longsword fighters' engines, the dark valley behind us soon shone with the brilliance of a series of explosions. The Covenant fell victim immediately, having not seen it coming. I remained standing the entire time, only managing to not get hit by debris out of sheer luck more than anything else.

As the Longswords finished their bombing run and soared overhead, they were soon intercepted by a trio of banshees, whom unleashed fire. Before they could even protest, two out of the five Longswords exploded, littering the sky with a rain of fire and flaming debris. I shook my head hopelessly. Minister was done for. I knew it. The Sergeant knew it. We all knew it.

Though the Covenant had been dealt with in the valley behind us, thanks to the self-sacrificing Longswords, the nearest Command Post wasn't for another few miles. We all knew our orders, and we didn't question them. Get to the nereast extraction point so that we could evacuate and get off-world ASAP. The rest joined me in standing and we glanced about the ruined valley before the Sergeant finally broke the silence.

"Well," he murmured. "We've got a long march ahead of us, marines." Glancing about at the ten of us he cleared his throat before nodding in the direction of the Command Post. As soon as we got there we'd be able to exfiltrate. If the Covenant didn't get there first. He passed by us and clapped me on the shoulder before heading in that direction. "Just another PT run," he drawled.

I sighed. "Yeah," I agreed weakly, eyes glued on destroyed valley. "Just another PT run."

I'm not being funny, but I think that this type of fan fiction is ridiculously overdone. I'm sure you plan on putting your own unique twist on it, but regardless the basic premise seems overly unoriginal.

There's much more to the Halo Universe than fighting the Covenant. Much more.
