Subject: HALO ONLINE COMMUNITY AT WAR... MAKE ALLIANCES FOR HIGHER STATS!

I wanted to discuss the idea of online communities for Halo 2. I've heard much discussion, dealing with Halo 2, that points to some sort of online system that lets clans coordinate together. This supposed system would let clans schedule tournaments, keep track of stats(reference - the new tool bar bungie added), and have some sort of online communty to further the experience of Halo 2 and Xbox live. That's not news to anyone, hopefully. What hasn't really been discussed is, and this is pure hope and speculation, what if there were two seperate online communities for Halo 2. An online community for those who are in human/spartan clans, and a community for those who are in covenant clans. Yes, playing as the covenant in multiplayer. (This has been hinted at/confiremed by Game Infromer issue 133) This is the sort of revolutionary multiplayer scenario bungie could be working on. Why revolutionary? Imagine going online to your human/spartan clan homepage through Xbox live.(the next or current installment depending upon when you read this) You, and the rest of your clan, could then coordianate an attack plan with allied human/spartan clans. After a time and a place/level is decided on, you could then send a challenge to the covenant online community. After the challenge is accepted by allied covenant clans, the different sides would go to battle! This, while highly imaginative, could possibly explain why in this newest screenshot, the one released on 4/13/04, none of the brown or red spartans appear to be shooting at each other. If you ask me, they look like they're coordinating or guarding something. We know from recent reports about the future of Xbox Live, that this sort of online system could be possible. We also know that Microsoft's mind set for the future of gaming is set almost completly on online play/community. This feature in Halo 2 would most deffinately accomplish Microsoft's goals for the future of Xbox live, and gaming!!!

Ever played the game Planetside?? I thought something like that would be suhweet with Halo 2. :: fills pants ::

  • 05.03.2004 5:47 PM PDT

I am familiar with the game Planetside, but I've never played it. Elaborate, if you don't mind, on the features in Planetside that could be used in Halo 2.

Sir yes Sir! Planetside is a massively multiplayer online game. There are three factions and Sony has dedicated servers. The three factions fight for control of bases and land, there are different kinds of bases that provide diferent bonus/advantages to your side if you control them. There are all kinds of certifications you have to earn to do certain things, and many ways to play, you could be a grunt (foot soldier), stealhy operative, pilot, gunner on dropship, small plane, tank, tank driver, stuff like that. You can always check the status of the game on the website. It'll tell you whos in control of what. I was thinking like, 2 factions (obviously human vs. covenant) who fight across huge maps with the certification/skill up system. You can check the status of an ongoing battle online, possibly message people who are in game from the computer. The problem with Planetside was many people werent too organized, and focus's heavily on team play. You could go it alone, but its hell fighting an effective squad by yourself. It really places the emphasis on teamwork not solo play. With voice communication, things could be alot more organized, and the new clan features, the potential is endless.......I'll leave you to dream........

Yea, I to have thought about this game type/scenario for Halo 2 or 3. It sounds freakin awsome. A game/war that never has to end... is that the concept?

Yes and no. Can you imagine the feeling, after your foces finally drive the covenant into defeat after a week of INTENSE fighting?? Or the crush of being smashed into submission after that week long fight?? It might be good to have it end, but I'd like longer games, instead of 10 minute games, ye know??

  • 05.03.2004 6:00 PM PDT

Yes, I hear what your spittin. This game type would make a much tighter/closer, perhaps not, Bungie community. There would also be much more statagy involved. Sounds like the perfect game:)

Because it sucks? lol
I don't want to play that. At all. Ever.
I just want to load into a game, have some senseless violence, and be done.
If Bungie announced this feature for Halo2 I'd be of the firm opinion that I'd never ever play it on Live. All it would do is split fans and allow idiots to scream "I PWNEDD!!! J00??" even more than they do.

Bah.
Se7enth Column is exactly what the fan base should be, which is why that's how it is. People who don't ever want to hear 8-12 year old kids scream racist remarks in the midst of a TK session can organize and play. I like that. "Clan" support is iffy for these very reasons- because of the raving groups of idiots who will try to challenge you and shout obscenity until you quit and they can think they won sometime.

Sure, clans can be good- but Se7enth already does everything a clan system ever could and more. Load up a friends list and go.

  • 05.03.2004 6:36 PM PDT

I understand that view, however saracastic it is, but there are some of us who would like to have more than a 10 min. jizz session. Which is a 8-12 year old kid more likely to enjoy. A 10 min. game that's over as soon as the lude remarks are, or a game that involves stategy to survive for the long haul. Sure, any Halo game type involves some type of strategy, but the question is which game type would have more core Halo fans in it? I think, as show by your reply, that the majority of the A.D.D. culture we live in wouldn't want to play a game type that involves more than button cruching for 10 minutes. This would certianly make the game more inriching and envolving for those who are interested in dialect, stategy, and community.

Any other opioniated minds want to speak up?

And the fact that this gametype was available, doesn't mean you would have to play it gspawn. You can have your 10 minute jizz bomb still. But don't ruin it for others....

I really think that would be a cool idea. I dunno about week-long games, people gotta sleep. Maybe you could have like a base camp that the other team isn't allowed into, where you could put your character before turning off your xbox. Cos if you pause during a multiplayer game stat whores can still kill you.
And if you go in, you can't come out for like a certain number of hours, set by the host, but defaulted at say 8 or 12?
That way you could have an army all over the world, and you wouldn't have to organise a time for everyone to be online. You just come in and fight when you feel like it.
Ooh, and maybe it could cycle day and night, so you could fight any time of the day. That way you could have a small force doing night insertions, like tru7h and reconciliation, or all-out daytime warfare like the halo lvl or Aoctr.....
drool....

Especialy if there was 32 players! Now THAT would be really fun, with the vehicles and huge levels! I think that would be awesome!

32 players! I didn't think of that! Maybe on a map from the campaign instead of specialised multiplayer maps. That way you'd have strategic buildings to assault, maybe one side would have a better position in one area and the other side would be stronger in another, and playing the single player game would take on a whole new meaning, you could use it to get to know the maps back to front and really plan out your strategy. You think modern armies go into battle without at least knowing the layout of the battlefield and having clear strategic objectives?

  • 05.03.2004 8:15 PM PDT

Good imput guys. I would have to agree that playing for an extended period of time, such as a week stright, would be impossible to do. But, like ya'll have suggested,(Yes I'm from the south:) people from all over the world would be invovled, so while your living your life, someone is playing in your possition, and vis-versa. Also, with the new installment of Xbox live, which is supposed to have all these connectivity features, many senarios are possible. For instance, say your clan, or what ever team your on, takes over some valuable territory, like a base from the opposing team. So, you go to bed and go on with your life thinking everything is o.k. Then, while your at your favorite fast food restarant with your buddies the next day you, and all of your clan members, get a text message on your cell phone from xbox live alerting you that your territory is being taken over. The alert could be set off by some type of security system within the game itself. Like motion detectors around the base; or, a guy who is on "guard duty" at the time of the attack pulls an alarm in the base that sets in motion you being alerted. While highly imaginative, this is a feature that I would like... as long as you could turn of the text messaging feature when not needed.

its not like that man Lotz of games have clans and it runs well and fun. and being able to rely have a clan on x-box as well is killer idea that more whant and I tell you that more people will agree with me than you on this. for 1 most clan DONT DONT bug and harase people they just have competion with other players that want to or other clans its FUN thats why we do it man, and dude most peopl that mess around like that are just normal not in a clan players. and dude a buddy list is not a clan. its cool to have friends list so we can play with clan members and fight regulars. but with out the real Clan vs clan system that so many gamers engoy its not the same. this is a most exlent idea for x-box. and to think you dont want us to get are clans because you had a few bad enconters and want no one to have clan fun ...I am shocked... almost t o shocked for woards

I think you guys really got somethin goin here.

This is what i've been thinkin of ever since the thought of human/covie battles came into mind. What if tho, (and this is a hige what if), bungie plans to include not 32 player multiplayer, but perhaps 48 or 64 players. And to expand on the idea. The area where you fight over could also be fought over among rival spartan or rival covie clans. That way, you could have an absolutley huge (New Mombassa) sized city to take over, but it is being fought over for control day and night until one of the factions takes it over. You could make deals with other spartan clans to join your battle to help push out the covies (and vice-versa). Another enticing feature may to add a (very limited) economy. Perhaps giving you the ability to purchase additional defense for your base. Maybe you only get BRs and snipers, but you just took over a covie supply chain, no you have plasma pistols and FRod Guns, plus some extra cash to maybe buy an extra stationary turret. This is very close to the threshold of MMORPG, but i think that I would enjoy this, especially with that test-message deal (or maybe e-mail/ MSN messenger?). MIght give me a reason to use MSN if it was integrated with Halo 2. The fact is, a lot of us, especially hardcore RPG fans at heart, would love Halo to be very tactical and have very drawn out battles. And what M$ is hinting at with theur .NET framework integration with XBLive, i think all of this may be a very ideal possibility.

P.S. Ever think of calling in an airstrike? (think E3 2003 vid)

no. id like alll the players maybe on hudg maps but the rest of you idea macks it to much like Gints Citacen Kabotos and team fotris classic (half life mod and game thingy) this is halo not those games

I agree. A true clan system weeds out the players that we have all come to despise. Only devoted fans of the game will stay for the long haul. Eventually, a community of true Halo fans, not people who buy the game for a few deathmatches, will rise. These fans will be held together by the common interest of furthering the history, and to a certain extent the story of the game by being an active part of it.

Eh, I could care less about the economy stuff really, but the fact that MS has hinted several times about integrating .NET into XBL makes much of this clan stuff possible. Plus, no, Halo isn't those games, but don't you think those games would have been better if they were put in the context of Halo?
