Becoming a Veteran doesn't involve being here for a long time. There are people from 2002 who turned to spam. All you need is intelligence and maturity. If you can master those two elements, you won't even care about being a "vet". You will come to this website for the enjoyable discussion with other "vets".
vet·er·an n. A person who is long experienced or practiced in an activity or capacity
So yes, it does actually refer to people who have been here a long time, or rather, being involved for a long time. There are productive, intelligent vets and those who are simply ticking time-bombs in the same way that there are productive, intelligent newcomers and trolls.
That definition refers to real life. What a veteran is in life, and what a veteran is on a forum is completely different. Someone could spend years on one forum and then move into a new one and be treated as an inferior just because he's new. You can't judge someone by how long they have been here, you can only judge them by the quality of their posts.
