Most discs you have to have a program to read the information. Like a cd on a computer, it requires a "media" player (i.e. Windows media player 9). If you want to get a song of a cd onto a computer, you can't just drag it of the list of songs on it. It has protection, so you need a program to pull it off. Thus the term "rip".
All video games have protection on them, and the xbox has to read "signed code" on the disc for you to be able to play it. The BIOS chip allows the game to go to the main menu. All games an CD have code on them. Like the xbox won't read CDRs, there is no code on it.
Main point: you can not get data of a protected disc (Halo) with out a ropper.
