How can I connect my Xbox console to my laptop? I have an ethernet cable connected to the port on the laptop and the other end in the xbox. I am connected wirelessly through another router in my home. Some please help me. Thanks!

Facts are the enemy of tru7h....

thats exactly the setup i have.

You'll need windows xp if you have a windows box.

You need to right click on the wireless connection in the "Network Connections" window then Properties>Advanced then in the area marked 'Internet Connection Sharing' check the box marked "allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection".

Facts are the enemy of tru7h....

Ok heres how i did it manually if the automatic configuration (on the xbox) dosen't work. Its the long way but i think it covers all the bases, i'll post a short way too.

Assuming you have Windows XP.

First we need to get the settings of the Ethernet card your connecting the xbox to so we can tell the xbox where to look for the network.

Getting the IP of your Ethernet card

When you share the wireless connection, XP will change the IP address of the Ethernet card. To check this :

Start>Control Panel > Network And Internet Connections> Netwrok Connections (or Start >Control Panel > Netwrok Connections, depending on how your system is set up) then right click on the Ethernet Connection (Mine was called 'Local Area Connection' but yours might not be) then Properties. A window will pop up. In that window there is a scroll box. At the end of the scroll box it should say "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" click on this and then on the Properties button thats just below the scroll box. Another window will pop up with the Ethernet cards TCP/IP properties.

In my case the IP Address has been set to 192.168.0.1 with a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. The gateway is left blank and i filled in the DNS servers with the DNS of my router. In my case the DNS servers were 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.1 (Note that these probably won't be the IP address you have, the address will depend on what router you have. You'll need to go to your router settings and find them for yourself). You could use any DNS server, but i think its best to do this.

Make a note of the IP Address and the Subnet Mask of your Ethernet card.

Setting the IP of the xbox..

On the xbox - Start the xbox with no game in the tray and you'll get the Xbox menu. Then SETTINGS>NETWORK SETTINGS >IP ADDRESSES

First of all switch from Automatic to Manual Configuration.

Next set the IP address....it should be similar to the IP of the Ethernet card on your laptop (for conveinence more than anything). In my case I used 192.168.0.3 (my ps2 is 192.168.0.2). Now change the Subnet Mask to be the same as on the Ethernet card of your laptop, in my case 255.255.255.0.

Finally change the Gateway of the xbox to be the IP address of the Ethernet card on your laptop. In my case it was 192.168.0.1.

Setting the DNS Servers for the xbox

On the xbox - SETTINGS>NETWORK SETTINGS>DNS SERVERS

Again set it to Manual Configuration..

Set the Primary DNS to the IP address of the Ethernet card (in my case that was 192.168.0.1) and the Alternate DNs to whatever you want (i used the DNS of my router 10.0.0.2).

Ok go up one menu and select Connect.

Thats about it.

Your xbox should now connect through the wireless card on your laptop. Post your results and let me know.

Although it really should have worked just by setting everything to automatic and setting up the connection sharing! Mine did. Maybe your firewall (if you have one) is being overly aggressive. Or maybe the ethernet connection isn't enabled. Maybe the ethernet cable is damaged? If windows firewall is setup to not allow any exceptions the xbox can't find the dns servers.

OK heres the quick manual setup (if automatic configuration dosen't work.) Its the same as the long way without most of the DNS stuff. Not sure how robust it is but it works.
