Maybe Achronos got bored of using consecutive numbers. That's the only possibility that comes my mind right now.

Well, Zanzibarians aren't intelligent enough to notice. Maybe they thought they could just let it slide...

Because a load of group boards were created before Zanzibar and Optimatch.

Forums are numbered in the order they were created. There is no seperate numbering for group forums.

Keep in mind there was, what, 5 months(?) between the New Hotness and the creation of Zanzibar.

No, it IS forums. The individual forums that are part of each group are in the same number sequence as the bungienet forums.

So the main forums were set up, then a bunch of people created groups, thus creating forums, and then Zanzibar and Optimatch.

Isn't Bungie.net in general (I mean front page, places like that) and these main forums all part of Group number 1?

I know the Marty Army is Group number 2.

The system treats the non-group sections of bungie.net as group 1, yes. Group one is "special" though, the system behaves a bit differently when operating in group 1.
