So, I'm sure at least some of you have read either "The Fall of Reach" or "First Strike" (please disregard "The Flood" as it wasn't written by him)...

But what would you think, by what you've read and are able to VISUALIZE in the books - if Eric Nylund wrote a script/screen play for a HALO movie?

I think he's got the skills and there's so much more of the story we've yet to unearth in HALO 2.

I think it'd be a neat way to launch HALO 3 on Xenon in 2006, movie tie-ins with another book and MORE merchandise. *cha ching*

HALO has so much more depth as a franchise and don't even get me started on the DOOM movie..."The Rock" is lame, CGI or real-life.

But if you've actually read the books by Nylund you see that The Chief (John 117) is actually a person and the other SPARTANS like Kelly and Linda and the others all have real personality.

And you could do a nice blend of CGI and Microsoft-sized sets to make it sweet.

I think the franchise has the best chances at being a successful game-to-movie trasnfer of all games.

Plus, you KNOW the HALO 2 story is going to be skrudda as well.

Yes, Bungie would be involved just as they were involved with Nylund writing the books.

Remember, they gave him access to all the back-story and extra stuff like the Covenant hierarchy and whatnot - how it all comes together.

I think it has the best possible chances of translating into a different medium and still being as badass as the game.

It's not too far-fetched (2552 MILITARY-time, not AD or BC) and it's got all the financial backing it would ever need. ;-)

No, not CG Covenant - like CGI some of the ships and scenes/settings special effects.

Maybe an occassionaly CGI Covie if its like one jumping from wall to wall or something - like how its supposed to be in the new game.

But Live-action, mixed with CGI and a badmutha script with MS marketing and merchandise.

HALO is/can be a MECA-franchise.

...So, wadda ya think about Nylund doing a HALO movie script?

Nylund would no nothing about it, since currently no Halo movie is being planned, although the possibility of one is striking. And, why would you need Nylund to write the script anyway? Have the same people who wrote the Halo script write the script for the movie. After all, Nylund didn't really come up with the quotes, and most things, since it was either Bungie telling him, or either him seeing action in the game. No need to spend more money on Nylund.

Well I'm pretty sure Eric Nylund WROTE the book, like I said with the help/assistance of Bungie but he DID write it.

And I heard sometime last year that MS was working with some LA Based company that works on developing movies based on existing franchises.

Or, just take the work that Bungie and Nylund did together and work that into a screenplay.

Bungie has created a franchise that can be WAY MORE than just a video game, and Microsoft knows it - that's why they have books and toys already.

It's coming I'm sure - just a matter of time...

If you want to look at it from a real Bungie perspective, there's a much better chance for a movie, if there is one, to be CG. Why? Well, it's cheaper. Think about this: Bungie already makes CG, so they could develop the movie, without paying nearly as much money to actors, since voiceovers are much less. Also CG doesn't require special effects, they come with it. If they wanted a live action movie that looks realistic, like a good CG would, they would need to spend a lot of money on special effects. And I don't see that happening.

u guys can say what ever u want but, fs was one hell of a book. and he didnt use refrences he was filling a gap in tim so bungie would give a start and finish and probally a guiding hand. i think nylund would be the writer for the movie because in the books he makes u visualise the war scenes in wich the mc fought in. in the flood it was like he shot 3 shots big deal. give me details!

The problem with a halo movie is that it will cost a ton of money to make. It will obviously get all the Halo fans to go and see it. But how many other people will want to? Seeing as how almost every scene will need a ton of special effects, it will, like I said, cost a lot of money. I don't think there's a chance it'll make more money than it costs to make then movie unless it becomes one of the best movies of that year. BTW, why would Nylund be writing the script? He's a good author, but I don't think he'd be able to write a movie script. They're two different things.

EDIT- If a movie is released, they would need to make Halo 3, just to keep Halo in everyone's minds. And if they make Halo 3, it will attract more people to the franchise, so there'll be more word of mouth advertising if a movie gets made.

Sorry but doing a full CGI movie would cost TONS MORE than doing a Live-action movie with some CGI sequences.

Look at "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" that movie nearly bankrupted Square.

And while the graphics in HALO 2 are astounding for video games - a Cinematic experience far greater than what can be achieved on a console would be needed.

Live-action with good script and good CGI to assist the story along would be the perfect blend.

...And how's about Eric Nylund and the Bungie staff being Producers? That'll work!

all a movie script is is a story that has been made so that every detail is displayed. i just think he has a good idea on what the scenes should look like. i also agree that if it was cgi then i would cost a ton of money. i would be one of the people that would by the movie and try to see something new everytime i watch it. but they could use actors. but use like green screens and such. wires. and some cgi.

You know, authors of books don't always write the script for their books' movies. In fact, they almost never do. They are either consulted with the script, or not involved at all, except with the licensing agreement. As for the CG/Live Action argument, I'd go with all Covenant being CG, Flood being special effects (they don't require as much detail as the Covenant do), the Marines Live Action, and MC a mix; either they would use the same technology LOTR used on Golem, or there would be a guy with Nightmare Armor (a tall guy, let's say taller then two meters), and special effects would be made to make him look bigger, and make the MJOLNIR look more alive, while CG would be used for the detailed textures.

From what I've seen of the books, they not much too behold (from a litererarry (sp?) point of view). They may be cool from a dorky Halo fan point of view...but as books they suck. If you want a Halo movie (which most likely be hella -blam!-) wouldn't you want the best of the best to do it? Not some second rate sci-fi writer?

Anyways the movie would stupid as hell if it was live action, and if it was it all CG...well then that would be stupid too. Because if it's all CG then why not just put it into the game?

I don't know if you book nerds noticed this but the actual game of Halo, is very cinematic. In Halo 2 I expect it to be even more so. So the idea of a movie, seems not only stupid and corny, but just another Hollywood bull-blam!- movie exploiting something to make cash.

-edit- Don't even bring up Nightmare armor.

In real life = pretty cool.
In an actual movie = second rate garbage.

why doesnt anyone pay attention to Dietz? The only reason ppl dont like him is because he wrote about something they knew about.. if you actually read through the book.. you would see that his writing is just as good ans Nylunds.. I hope he writes more books for halo, because he doesnt get enough credit

i would only enjoy it if it was not real people...but instead all cut-scene like...ya kno what i mean...even animated would be better than real actors IMO....and all the same voice actors too. then i would be interested...

So negative.

I think with Bungie and Nylund on as Producers it would rock.

CGI would be WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to do. And something animated, unless it was like wicked ass American looking anime, wouldn't work.

Some of you don't have enough faith in HALO. At the end of HALO 2, this four-part franchise will be at its peak and then you'll see the STORY and characters could translate VERY WELL to another medium.

Booyashaka. Respek.

WELL ITS NOT BY HIM BUT LOOK AT THIS!!!:

HALO: THE MOVIE

SCREENPLAY WRITTEN BY
Kellen Squire

OPENING CREDITS ROLL OVER COMPLETE BLACKNESS. IN THE BACKGROUND, THOUGH, WE CAN HEAR NOISES - SHIPS TALKING TO EACH OTHER (OVER SOFT HALO-ESQUE MUSIC- A GREGORIAN CHANT? LIKE IN THE HALO OPENING THEME?)

VOICE 1

Uhh, this is the UNSC Authority... we're picking up something strange on our sensors...

VOICE 2

Roger that, Authority, please keep us-

VOICE 1

Oh my God! It's the Covenant! Hundreds- STATIC.

VOICE 2

Authority? Authority, are you there?

VOICE 3

This is Captain Jodrell onboard the UNSC Sally Ride! Covenant! Covenant everywhere! Reach is under attack!

VOICE 4

Attention, all United Nations forces- this is Admiral Roland Freemont. Reach has come under attack by Covenant forces. Proceed at best speed to rally point Zulu. All ships must inact the Cole Protocol immediately. I repeat-

VOICE 5

(Young) Enact the Cole Protocol? We won't be able to find Earth again!

FOR THE NEXT MINUTE OR TWO, AS THE OPENING CREDITS ROLL, WE CAN HEAR THE RADIO SIGNALS FROM A PTICHED BATTLE. DURING THE BATTLE, WE COME TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE PLANET BEING ATTACKED IS CALLED "REACH". WE HEAR FROM THE COVENANT ONCE DURING THIS TIME, THEIR STANDARD "YOUR DESTRUCTION IS THE WILL OF THE GODS" SPEECH, WHICH IS IMMEDIATELY HECKLED AT BY UNSC FORCES. BEFORE LONG, REACH HAS FALLEN. ALL UNSC SHIPS ARE ORDERED TO FALL BACK. WE CLOSE THIS INTERLUDE WITH...

VOICE 6

This is Captain Jacob Keyes of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn- we're falling back. Generating random jump vector- we won't lead them back to Earth.

CREDITS END. BLACKNESS REMAINS FOR A FEW SECONDS MORE.

SCREEN FADES BACK INTO COLOR. SHOWS OUTER SPACE- SCREEN IS FILLED WITH STARS. MUSIC OPENS, THE SAME AS IN THE OPENING CINEMATIC OF THE GAME.

CAPTAIN KEYES' VOICE

Cortana, all I want to know is-

CORTANA's VOICE

Did we lose them? I think we both know the answer to that.

THE STARFIELD BLURS, AND A LARGE SHIP ENTERS THE CAMERA FRAME, OUTLINED BY A GAS GIANT- THRESHOLD. IT IS THE "Pillar of Autumn", WHICH WE CAN SEE STENCILED ON THE SIDE.

THE SHIP CRUISES THROUGH THE FRAME FOR A FEW SECONDS, BEFORE WE CUT TO THE BRIDGE. THE BRIDGE IS A VERY HIGH-TECH AND BUSY PLACE- TECHNICIANS RUN ABOUT, CREW MEMBERS ARE MANNING HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAY CONSOLES, TWO GUNNER'S MATES ARE MANNING THE MAC GUN TURRET.

CHARACTERS
- CAPTAIN JACOB KEYES
- CORTANA
- BRIDGE CREWMEMBERS (10-17, MALE AND FEMALE)
- MAC GUN OPERATORS (2)
- MARINE GUARD? (2-3)
NOTES:

- MAKE SURE PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF THEIR BLOCKING- WE DON'T WANT THEM TO ACCIDENTLY HAVE THEIR FINGERS POP THROUGH THE SPACE WHERE THEIR DISPLAYS WILL BE, IF WE DECIDE TO DO HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAYS

-MAKE THE CREW HAVE SOME SORT OF WEARY TENSION- 30 YEARS OF WAR IS A LONG TIME, AND REACH HAS JUST BEEN DESTROYED- THEY SHOULD BE ANTSY, BUT MAINTAINING THEIR PROFESSIONAL MANNER
BLOCKING-

BRIDGE IS IN A RECTANGULAR SHAPE. THERE IS A CORRIDOR RUNNING THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF IT, CONTAINING A CORRIDOR RUNNING THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF IT.

BRIDGE- APPROXIMATELY FIFTY TO SIXTY FEET LONG, AND THIRTY OR SO WIDE. SHAPED THUSLY:

C= COMMAND CONSOLE, WHERE CREW SIT TO WORK ON WHATEVER THEIR STATION DOES. HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAYS?
G= GUN CREW
AI= CORTANA
K= KEYES
ROOM IS APPROXIMATELY 10 TO 12 FEET HIGH AS WELL.

THE CAMERA FINALLY CENTERS ON A MAN WITH HIS BACK TO THE CAMERA. HE APPEARS TO BE IN HIS FIFTIES, WITH GRAY HAIR, BUT IN GOOD SHAPE. HE TURNS TO TALK TO SOMEONE BEHIND THE CAMERA. HE IS CAPTAIN JACOB KEYES.

CAPTAIN KEYES

We made a blind jump... how did they-

CAMERA ANGLE WHIRLS. WE SEE CORTANA, IN HER SHIMMERING OPPULENCE, PROJECTED FROM A HOLOPROJECTOR IN FRONT OF CAPTAIN KEYES. BEHIND HER, WE CAN SEE INTO THE DEPTH OF SPACE.

CORTANA

Get here before us? Captain Keyes, the Covenant have always been faster than us. And as for tracking us all the way from Reach, at lightspeed, my maneuvering options were limited.

CAPTAIN KEYES PACES THE BRIDGE FOR A MOMENT. HE WALKS UP BEHIND A CREWMAN WHO IS LOOKING AT A HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAY OF SOME SORT, LOOKING OVER THE CREWMAN'S SHOULDER.

CAPTAIN KEYES

We were running dark, yes?

CORTANA

Yes, sir, until we decellerated. *No one* could have missed the hole we tore in subspace.

CAPTAIN KEYES SIGHS, AND STANDS UP. HE BEGINS TO PACE THE BRIDGE.

CORTANA

The Covenant are on the far side of the planet, sir. They were waiting for us. There was nothing you could do.

CAPTAIN KEYES WAVES A HAND IN A DISMISSAL GESTURE.

CAPTAIN KEYES

Where do we stand?

CORTANA

Our fighters are mopping up their recon picket right now.

CAPTAIN KEYES NODS. CORTANA CONTINUES.

CORTANA

But I've isolated approach signatures from multiple CCS-class battlegroups... make it... three or four capital ships per group. And in about, oh, ninety seconds they'll be all over us.

CAPTAIN KEYES SIGHS LOUDLY.

CAPTAIN KEYES

Well, that's it, then. Bring the ship back up to Combat Alert Alpha. I want everyone at their stations.

CORTANA

Aye, aye, sir... everyone?

CAPTAIN KEYES

Everyone. Oh- and Cortana?

CORTANA

Hmmm?

CAPTAIN KEYES

Let's give our old friends a warm welcome.

CORTANA SMILES APPROVINGLY.

CORTANA

I've already begun.

CAMERA PANS OUT OF BRIDGE, TO OUTLINE THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN AGAINST THE STARS. THE CAMERA THEN SHIFTS ANGLES UPWARD, UNTIL WE SEE... A GIANT, INTERGALATIC HULA HOOP.

AT THIS POINT, THE SCENE SUDDENLY SHIFTS TO A PYSCHADELICALLY-COLORED ROOM. THE SONG "NO RAIN" BY BLIND MELON SUDDENLY BEGINS TO PLAY. GIVE THE SONG A FEW SECONDS TO LEAD IN, AND THE MASTER CHIEF AND AN ELITE COMMANDER DANCE- NO, MAKE THAT PRANCE... SKIP, EVEN... INTO THE ROOM, AND BEGIN TO DANCE WITH EACH OTHER.

MASTER CHIEF

(singing) All I can say is that my life is pretty plain I like watching the puddles gather, rain

ELITE COMMANDER

(singing) Rrrr rrwow grrr rerrrr rreerrrr rrrrwwow Grrrrrreeaarrreerrrrrwow

(translation- And all I can do is just pour some tea for two And speak my point of view, but it's not sane)

MASTER CHIEF AND ELITE COMMANDER

It's not sane... (Rrrrraaaoww)

THE SCREEN GOES BLACK WITH A GIANT RECORD-CUTOFF NOISE. BEFORE LONG, THE FOLLOWING FLASHES ONTO THE SCREEN:

ERROR 932.2- WRITER EXPERIENCING ACID TRIP. ABORT, RETRY, FAIL, LOOK AT THE SWIRELY COLORS?
