Halo CE Campaign > Halo 2 Campaign > Reach Campaign > Halo 3 campaign > Halo 3: ODST Campaign.
Halo 2 campaign> Halo CE campaign > ODST campaign > Halo 3 & Reach campaign can fight it out for last place.
Halo 2 and Halo CE had unbelievably great campaigns, so it is very difficult trying to pick out which is better. The only reason I say Halo 2 is better is because 2 had a much deeper and fleshed out storyline, and din't feel quite as repetitive. But nothing will ever top that feeling you got while play Halo CE the first time.
ODST exceded my expectations, and did a great job driving home a very character driven story. I felt like I grew to know and like all of the characters for there own quirky reasons. That and the soundtrack was simply put amazing!
Reach was such a disappointment. There was absolutely no character development, basically to understand the characters at all you had to have read any pre-release information on the characters. There was more emotion and effort put in to the characters death's than the actual character development. This on top of the fact that Reach's campaign seemed to go out of its way to confuse the Halo timeline, just to put out an average at best campaign.
I could not disagree with any part of that. Well said in general.
Personally, I prefer most things lost between Halo 2 & 3. The longer, seemingly more difficult campaign including specific Covenant/Sangheili chapters playable as the Arbiter probably being one of the greatest of which. So much new music, so many new places/perspectives shown in Halo 2's campaign...It's almost as though someone decided to just peek outside their box/comfort zone of tradition for just a split second before taking it all back and jumping straight back in at the first sign of any disapproval at all whatsoever.
Halo Reach's campaign really brought even less to the table...mostly concerning things I already knew or had comparatively little interest in. Such is the nature of prequels, it seems. True, there were a couple apparent epiphanies I witnessed with regards to gameplay mechanics throughout...You know, as though one were to explore/re-examine a concept previously judged as flawed or dismissed as impractical and suddenly come to a realization something like, "By God, why didn't I try that -years- ago?"
Beyond those very welcome, but still somewhat sparse gameplay adjustments, about the only thing I felt was truely a novel idea within Reach's campaign was the ability to play as a female main character/Spartan in the main story.(Which I might add, I distinctly prefer female 6's voiceover work to male 6's)
I also suppose that to me, 6 brought forth better character development through the virtue that 'her' background/disposition was largely left to the players own imagination. But that's not even technically characterization per se, especially since it seems an unfortunately considerable percentage of the gaming public has barely a shred of their own imagination these days. Jorge was ok too I'll grant, seeming a bit more unique(especially among other Spartan II's) ...though he was removed far
too soon.
So again...in summation: imo, Halo 2 > Halo 3 & Reach.
