don't really understand why some people try so hard to discredit Reach though. yeah, I can understand some complaints, but then there's the people who're trying to claim H3 is better at everything. making yourself oblivious to the good because you're upset with a few other changes isn't a rational way of going about things like that.
Well, Reach reversed the improvements made by H3. There was good progress thanks to H3 and Reach made a return to CE-H2. But isn't that supposed to be a good thing? After all, that is what people demanded. Not when the interpretation is too literal.
H1 and H2 gameplay is not determined by jump height, op guns, physics, or any of that stuff. H1 had a balanced weapon sandbox, consistent AI, a lot of realism. H2 had a new and wickedly awesome rifle, a new perspective and began the Halo lore, had better scripting, etc.
Where was this in Reach?
The weapons were horrific. The enemy AI were op while the friendly AI sucked ass. The realism was noticeably missing. The BR was replaced by the DMR, which is only a utility weapon, not a fun and awesome weapon. We never saw things from the Covenant side and the Halo lore was missing; the story sucked. Reach's scripting was so horrible... the friendly AI are terrible drivers. And the absence of spectacular Scarab fights... *shudders* Even though H2's Scarab was scripted, that was more fun than 2 Scarabs which do nothing.
The things that they "restored" was also done horribly:
-incompetent friendly AI that are slow at everything, even slower than the CE marines
-lower jump height, even lower than in CE. Grenade jumps are so freaking difficult
-terrible physics. I can send AI flying, splatter Jackals without even trying, and the troopers always get splattered (and would splatter me in turn if I had Reach)
-powerful plasma pistol which has a horrible overcharge but AI spam that overcharge, which brings us to the most important part
-cheap AI. A complete disregard of fairness and balance. Even H2's Elites were fun to fight if you gave them a chance. Reach's Elites are never fun to fight. Assassinating them is entertaining, but it's not fun when it takes me a hundred of tries to get it right. Stupid -blam!- Grunts and Jackals always getting in the way. Kill stealing Pelicans taking my Ultra Elite prey. Elites berserking too much. And let's not get into Jackals...
Reach assassination runs, it ain't worth it! I was only able to do it because they were distracted. It's the same thing on other levels as well by what I've seen. CE assassination runs were way better because they were reasonable and realistic. Even if they were focused on me and weren't distracted, I could pwn their ass, even Zealots!!
It's not just about Halo 3. The game is -blam!-, an insult to CE, H2, and H3. Had it been it's own game, it would have done fine with some improvements. AA's and Bloom, that's ok, if done correctly. But messing with (as in messing up) the core of the Halo campaign: the lore, the AI, the locations, the exploration and mystery, the weapons, the realism (but not too realistic, like CoD), the physics!! That's unacceptable!
Every long rant I make against Reach is inspired by how it has taken classic Halo and worsened it instead of improving it. Oh and the Reach demo. The Reach demo is what convinced me that M$ were just out for money, money, money. And that means graphics, graphics, graphics; multiplayer, multiplayer, multiplayer.
But since the friendly AI that spawn later on Installation 04 seem to be decent, it looks like 343 might have some creative freedom... and sense of what is Halo.
CEA was disappointing in some aspects but it is like ODST, a game long forgotten but having deeper meaning, more than Reach.
I don't care if H4 ends up implementing -blam!- like Bloom (which is unlikely anyways), as long as it does it properly and doesn't worsen the core.
Also, I don't care if I have to deal with a damage sponge enemy, as long as it's fun to fight.
Bad damage sponges: H3 Pure Forms, H2 Brutes, Reach Jackals
Fun damage sponges: Ultra Elites, H1 Zealots, H3 Brute Chieftains
