Diamond Age?? Hardly -- the only game on that list that can truly be considered innovative is Fable, and that one not by much -- They are undoubtedly good games - but not destined to be classics -- and Doom 3 already is getting dissapointing fanfare...

thats all opinion. Halo 2 is innovative, sure it has similar ELEMENTS that other games have JUST AS MARIO 3 DID. Its just that both of these games did what other games couldn't do. You mentioned Fable, but I bet thats the game you know least about!

Ya, agree, Halo 2 is the most innovative FPS I've ever heard about... boarding vehicles... who thought that up?

I have two words, that will bring back the days of gaming we have forgotten... it started out as a great flash game two years ago, and is now coming out as what appears to be the greatest 2d scroller since the BRILLIANT metal slug... that right! I'm talking aboput Alien Hominid. Two words, Alien hominid.. tow beautofi beautiful words... Alien Hominid.

Try me LOL...

And as for Halo 2 - It can HARDLY be considered innovative - not from what I've seen. Evolutionary yes - not innovative. And you are correct - SMB3 wasn't innovative either. But it was Damn evolutionary. As for Fable -- I've had it prepaid for a little more than a year LOL, and I hang on Molyneux's every word.

But every year the bar is raised by games. While I agree that the quality of game plots are dropping...where are the days of good old Final Fantasy/Halo and Zelda and Mario etc.? But now if you would take N64 games and have them rated, they'd get really bad ratings because the graphics wouldnt be up to par, the sound wouldn't be good, and how the heck could I hold that N64 controller when i was 13???

IMO, the only good Final Fantasys were FF7, and probably the ones before ( that I never played).

Oh ya, and as for graphics, I believe graphics to be a very important part of gameplay, at least FPS's, because good graphics add a whole lot to the immersion department. I dare you to call Mario immersive.

thats the truth about the good games once in a blue moon. Movies also anymore are in a competition to see which studio can jam more computer graphics into the movie and in the process forget about the story. Games in most cases are the same way anymore. I do think that the newer technology in the past year or two are allowing game makers to do the things they never could. Now they are starting to focus on gameplay and content along with the eye candy. I can tell there are some old timers on here thats cool to know. This is a good thread.

I know what you mean. Back in my commodore days, sega days, nes days, snes days etc, i can barely remember a bad game, every game a played was an instant great fun classic! No-a-days a good game comes once in a blue moon.

And herin lies the problem -- With the few games that they spend the time on today the stock is dropping. Unfortunately a few games can't save an "Age".
For every game like Halo 2 or Fable, there are 10 like Simpsons: Hit and Run and Kakuto Chojin.

and how many CRAPPY games where there for every good NES game like Mario 3 or Zelda???

ANSWER: alot

Not as many as you would think -- the crappy games didn't start inundating the market until Atari dropped the Rabbit code - the code to unlock the 10 NES code in the NES. Then there were a deluge of crappy games -- It was the same thing that happened to the Atari 2600 - but Nintendos lawyers were better - so it wasn't as bad as what happened to Atari.

There are no irrelevant quotes of historical figures here. Neither will you find any links, chain posts, memes, clan advertisements, self-promotions, or the tiniest of ASCII pictures.

So go away.

Ya, agree, Halo 2 is the most innovative FPS I've ever heard about... boarding vehicles... who thought that up?

Again, you point to Halo 2. How long have we been waiting for it? Years. Why is it that we have to look so far for one good game?

Again -- Halo 2 isn't innovative. It's evolutionary -- Ask Bungie themselves...

Holy -blam!-!!!

Damn... that is a lot of stuff... I take it you would know what is a classic and what is not. Well... tell me this, do you think that Halo and Halo 2 will be known as classics in the future?

(I certainly do)

Wait a second, you don't own a Xbox? NVM... I missed it, you have Halo one... nice...

Actually I have a few XBoxes -- and I believe that Halo will be considered a classic. Halo 2 will be considered better - but Halo will hold a crown - I'm almost certain.

i agree.

The Golden Age will come again. It is only a matter of time until either Nintendo goes the way of Sega, or Microsoft's empire gets so large that they buy out Nintendo (I know how unlikely this is so please don't flame). Then Nintendo will go 3rd party and we'll be playing Zelda and Mario, except with Xbox controllers with Downloadable content. Super Mario Brothers online co-op would be sweet. One person would be Mario, one would be Luigi.

And to tie this in with Halo...sorry can't think of anything but it's related somehow.

Do you honestly think I'm only looking forward to Halo 2? I'm looking forward to many games, Fable, HL2, Battlefield2, and many others I can't think of right now.

Note: Mostly FPS's

Im not talking about graphics in regards to the n64. As a whole i thought that system bombed. Id have to say that the playstation had an awesome life span alot of all time greats under that systems belt. And its plain to see why people buy go out and buy ps2 over xbox they built such a rep for themselves the name itself sells the system. I see the grand theft auto thing fading out in time. But yes it is and was a big game.

To be honest GTA gets boring after you steal a tank (hehe) and put it in your garage... I probably won't even buy the next set of GTA games that will come out. And I agree, I liked PS better than N64, I liked action games, not platformers. Mario 64 did kickass though. (sunshine sucked)

How the hell am I supposed to know, or why would I care. How I see it, my golden age is coming... and no one can take it away.

(let me guess... N64?.... or perhaps Atari?)

i care about storylines. Im not playing some FPS game that has no interesting storyline that twists and turns. A game can have great graphics and cool weapons but for me no good storyline = no game. And Halo was the best storyline Ive ever seen in a game, i thought stuff like that could only be written in a book, all the twists and truns! And in Halo2 Im looking foward to the stoyline.

So in other words Mario wasn't for you : )

I just had to make that little point... name me some good old games with good storylines (other than RPG's).

Obviously there is no convincing each other.

I, as a gamer, cannot be satisfied with nothing but FPS. And FPS is the only genre of gaming which has lost nothing to the end of the Golden Age. If you are content with a few good games a year, then so be it, but we are not all so.

Halos magic is it gets you into it. You feel the emotions and get really into the storyline. I too have never ran into a game that did that. Although final fantasy 7 had an epic story also.

 • 08.12.2004 5:49 PM PDT

A golden age is an age of remembered games in my opinion. Halo will definitly be remembered, but things like splinter cell, although good, will not be remembered throughout time.
