I stated Nintend of America because in my opinion, their creativity is at an all time high. While they may not be focusing their ad campaigns on us older gamers, they have the potential to make great games for our demographic. They will have to concede to online play, but as they point out, only 8% of gamers who play online actually pay for the service, and it does cost them a few too many gold coins to keep the servers up and running.

While online may be a great experience, Nintendo is still an old school Japanese business, and they will watch where every penny falls. They will step into the online arena soon enough, but probably to a more social and less hardcore level. As they note of course, most people who play games online prefer to play them on a PC, which is true.

The innovation I'm talking about is some of the software. Anyone ever heard of Animal Crossing? A kids game for sure, but a damn smart
piece of code and creativity.

I agree with you 100%.. And Animal Crossing took about 3 months of my life away before I broke the habit -- It's worse than Crack!!!

Well, IMO if Nintendo continues upon the path they are taking right now they won't last long.

Because as much of a great game animal crossing might be, I can tell you the majority of gamers don't play those games.

With Next Gen coming upon us next year, all the small gaming companies might have a hard time making the jump to new hard ware. Game developement is becoming more expensive every year, and it's harder to make hit games that make money. In the future of games its going to be a competion on quality instead of visuals.. since I see them not going much further.

Nintendo's been making sound decisions since 1983. I have faith that they will last through at least one more console -- You can't argue with the gameboy.

True, the Gameboy is like their flagship right now, I don't own one right now, as I'm not into that kind of stuff, but I respect it.

I think you aren't being fair -- Many of the old school gamers look for those games specifically -- Animal Crossing was an innovative game! A game that keeps playing itself whether you're there or not.

Microsoft is focusing on making its equipment easier to use for video game designers. It won't be long before PC games and Xbox games can be created almost simultaneously.

Well yes as of now Nintendo owns the handheld market, but with PSP on its way Nintendo is gonna have a run for it's money!!

Yeah I know... If you focus on hardware though, it appears Microsoft may have the weakest specs of the Big 3 Gamers in the next product cycle.

The biggest thing Nintendo has to do to make all of that creativity relevant is to olden up the games a bit. While it may be a sad fact, I know there are a lot of 9 year olds that wwould rather kill a prostitute and gun down Haitians in GTA than spray water at Bowser.

Look at the numbers though --
Online isn't a big factor yet.

OK Quiz time again!! What was the first console to have an online service -- and what was the first stable online system for a console?

Yes, that is true, but how many old school gamers are there? I can understand if you grew up with that kind of stuff (which I didn't by the way), then you would definitely like a game like Animal Crossing. However, I grew up around FPS's (sorta).

It doesnt matter which market Nintendo owns. It is common knowledge that Nintendo holds a large chunk of Japan. Soil which, try as it might, Microsoft can't really get a footing in. Japan makes up the majority of video gamers, followed by US/Canada. That's why Microsoft is looking to establish itself in Europe. But as long as Nintendo commands the following of Japan, they won't go anywhere. They just have to look out for Sony.

Yeah the PSP has me a bit wary. Sony is making a lot of dumb decisions lately, like deciding that all of their Music Playback Devices have to use the Atrac3 format...

IGN is carrying the text of a speech from a Nintendo of America Rep, It's a good read if you are interested in what their new philosophy is Link

Idk, I think telling some poorly pixelated guy wearing a red beanie cap to go get his mail from an alligator is kinda addicting. I can even take him to my friends house.

Edit * Im just kidding. My opinion doesnt matter cuz i've NEVER played Animal Crossing so i cant really comment.

Animal Crossing was fun for a few Months, but after that you've done pretty much everything. You have to give it credit for being innovative.... though
